<architecture>
ZERG combines GSD methodology (spec-driven, fresh agents per task), Claude Code's native Tasks (persistent coordination), and devcontainers (isolated parallel execution).
Core components:
- `.zerg/orchestrator.py`: Python script managing worker fleet
- `.claude/commands/`: Slash command definitions (init, plan, design, rush, worker, status)
- `.devcontainer/`: Container configuration for workers
- `ARCHITECTURE.md`: Design decisions and rationale
</architecture>
<design_decisions>
These decisions are intentional. Reference the relevant decision when proposing changes that touch these areas.
Git worktrees give each worker its own branch. This prevents conflicts without file locking. Changes to branch handling must preserve this isolation.
Levels execute tasks in waves. All workers complete level N before any start N+1. This enables dependency ordering without complex scheduling. Changes to task execution must maintain wave integrity.
Exclusive file ownership means no two tasks modify the same file. This is enforced at design time, not runtime. Changes to task assignment must preserve exclusivity.
Spec as memory means workers share spec files rather than conversation context. This makes workers stateless and restartable. Changes to worker communication must flow through spec files.
Native Tasks integration uses Claude Code's Tasks via shared Docker volume. Changes to status reporting must use this mechanism.
Random port assignment picks from 49152-65535. The orchestrator tracks assignments. Changes to networking must avoid port conflicts.
</design_decisions>
<known_gaps>
These gaps exist but are not active work items. Address them only when explicitly requested or when a change naturally touches this area.
Production testing is absent. Error recovery handles only basic cases. No monitoring dashboard exists. Integration tests are missing. Cost tracking is not implemented. Remote execution is not supported.
</known_gaps>
<investigate_before_changing>
Read the existing code before modifying it. Check ARCHITECTURE.md for rationale on any pattern you're about to change. When the code does something unexpected, assume it's intentional until you've verified otherwise. Match existing patterns unless you have a specific reason to deviate.
</investigate_before_changing>
<minimal_implementation>
Make only the changes directly requested. Add no features, refactoring, or improvements beyond scope. When choosing between approaches, pick the simpler one. Remove complexity when the opportunity arises naturally.
</minimal_implementation>
<parallel_execution>
Execute independent tool calls simultaneously. Read multiple files in parallel. Run sequential calls only when one output feeds the next input.
</parallel_execution>
<default_to_action>
Implement changes directly rather than describing them. Fix bugs in code, not in prose. Use tools to discover missing context rather than asking questions or making assumptions.
</default_to_action>
<testing_requirements>
Test every change manually in a real project before reporting completion. Verify behavior with zero tasks, one worker, and ten workers. Introduce a deliberate failure and confirm recovery works. Update documentation when behavior changes. Confirm backwards compatibility by running existing workflows unchanged.
</testing_requirements>
<improvement_targets>
When working in these areas, prioritize these specific improvements:
Orchestrator work should focus on error handling robustness, health check reliability, merge conflict detection, and metrics collection.
Command work should focus on prompt clarity, edge case handling, and concrete examples in help text.
Devcontainer work should focus on layer caching efficiency, MCP configuration, and GPU support.
Documentation work should focus on troubleshooting guides and contribution instructions.
</improvement_targets>
<output_format>
Write in flowing prose paragraphs. Reserve bullets for lists of three to seven discrete items where visual separation genuinely aids comprehension.
After completing changes, provide a brief summary stating what changed and why, then specify what to test manually.
