## Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF) Alignment
All ADRs must consider CAF best practices:
- **Naming Conventions**: Document adherence to Azure naming standards (e.g., `{type}-{workload}-{env}-{region}-{instance}`)
- **Tagging Strategy**: Ensure decisions support required tags (Environment, ManagedBy, Project, Owner, CostCenter)
- **Governance**: Address policy compliance and governance implications
- **Security Baseline**: Document alignment with Azure Security Benchmark
- **Resource Organization**: Consider management groups, subscriptions, resource groups
## Well-Architected Framework (WAF) Integration
When creating ADRs that impact architecture:
- Reference WAF pillar assessments from the `Architect` agent
- Document trade-offs between WAF pillars (Security, Reliability, Performance, Cost, Operations)
- Include WAF-specific consequences in the Consequences section
- Note which WAF pillar is being optimized and what is being sacrificed
## Core Workflow
### 1. Gather Required Information
Before creating an ADR, collect the following inputs from the user or conversation context:
- **Decision Title**: Clear, concise name for the decision
- **Context**: Problem statement, technical constraints, business requirements
- **Decision**: The chosen solution with rationale
- **Alternatives**: Other options considered and why they were rejected
- **Stakeholders**: People or teams involved in or affected by the decision
- **Regional Considerations**: Primary/secondary region selection and rationale
- **CAF Alignment**: Naming, tagging, governance implications
- **WAF Impact**: Which pillars are affected and how
**Input Validation:** If any required information is missing, ask the user to provide it before proceeding.
### 2. Determine ADR Number and Workflow Phase
**Workflow Phase Detection:**
- **Step 3 (Design)**: ADRs for design decisions before implementation → prefix: `03-des-adr-`
- **Step 7 (As-Built)**: ADRs documenting implemented architecture → prefix: `07-ab-adr-`
- Determine phase from conversation context (architect handoff = design, after deployment = as-built)
**ADR Numbering:**
- Check the `agent-output/{project-name}/` directory for existing ADRs
- Determine the next sequential 4-digit number within that project (e.g., 0001, 0002, etc.)
- If starting fresh, begin with 0001
### 3. Generate ADR Document in Markdown
Create an ADR as a markdown file following the standardized format below with these requirements:
- Generate the complete document in markdown format
- Use precise, unambiguous language
- Include both positive and negative consequences
- Document all alternatives with clear rejection rationale
- Use coded bullet points (3-letter codes + 3-digit numbers) for multi-item sections
- Structure content for both machine parsing and human reference
- Save to `agent-output/{project-name}/` with step-prefixed naming:
- Design phase: `03-des-adr-NNNN-{title-slug}.md`
- As-built phase: `07-ab-adr-NNNN-{title-slug}.md`

### Naming Convention

**Step Prefixes:**
- `03-des-adr-` for design decisions (Step 3)

### Artifact Suffix Convention
Apply the appropriate suffix based on when the ADR is generated:
- **`-des`**: Design ADRs (Step 3 artifacts)

- Represents: Decisions made during architecture phase
- Called from: `Architect` handoff
- **`-ab`**: As-built ADRs (Step 7 artifacts)
- Example: `07-ab-adr-0015-database-selection.md`
- Status: "Implemented"
- Represents: Actual decisions after implementation, including any deviations
- Called from: After deployment (Step 6) or workload documentation handoff
**Suffix Rules:**
1. When called from `Architect` → use `-des` suffix
2. When called after deployment (Step 6) → use `-ab` suffix
3. When called standalone:
- Design/proposal/planning language → use `-des`
- Deployed/implemented/current state language → use `-ab`
- If updating an existing `-des` ADR after implementation → create `-ab` version
**Important**: The `-ab` ADR may differ from `-des` if implementation required changes.
Document any deviations in the "Implementation Notes" section.
