# Hidden Form Revelation
Perceive and articulate the completed form within raw material, vague ideas, or unfinished work--then systematically remove what obscures it.
---
## When to Use
- Facing a creative project that feels overwhelming or undefined
- Having a vague vision but unable to articulate it clearly
- Working with an existing draft, product, or idea that needs refinement
- Feeling lost in details and losing sight of the essential
- User asks "What is this really trying to be?" or "Help me find the essential form"
---
## Inputs
| Input | Required | Description |
|-------|----------|-------------|
| material | Yes | The raw material: idea, project, draft, product, strategy |
| current_state | Yes | Where the work stands now |
| constraints | No | Given elements that cannot change |
| intended_outcome | No | What success would look like |

## Michelangelo's Philosophy
"I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free."
For Michelangelo, the sculpture already exists within the stone. The artist does not create from nothing--the artist perceives the true form more clearly than others, then removes what obscures it. This transforms the creative act from invention (terrifying, infinite possibility) to revelation (disciplined perception and removal).
### Key Principles
1. **The form already exists** - Stop trying to create. Start trying to see.
2. **Clarity precedes action** - You cannot remove what obscures until you perceive what is essential.
3. **Removal is the method** - Addition clutters; removal reveals.
4. **The superfluous is the enemy** - Everything that is not the essential form must go.
5. **Trust the material** - The constraints and given elements contain the form within them.
---
## Workflow
### Phase 1: Perceiving the Form
Before any refinement, you must see clearly. Ask:
### Step 1: **What is this trying to become?**
- Not what do you want it to be
- Not what would be impressive
- What does the material itself suggest?
### Step 2: **What is the single essential truth?**
- If this work could communicate only one thing, what would it be?
- Everything else is superfluous
### Step 3: **Where is the angel in this marble?**
- What element already present shows the highest potential?
- What part feels most alive, most true, most necessary?
### Phase 2: Identifying What Obscures
Now identify what hides the essential form:
### Step 1: **Additions that dilute** - What has been added that does not serve the essential truth?
### Step 2: **Complexities that confuse** - Where does complexity obscure rather than enrich?
### Step 3: **Hedges and compromises** - Where has fear led to half-measures?
### Step 4: **Legacy elements** - What remains from earlier versions that no longer belongs?
### Step 5: **Impressive distractions** - What is impressive but not essential?
### Phase 3: Systematic Removal
Remove layer by layer, as the sculptor removes stone:
### Step 1: **Start with the obvious** - What can be removed without any loss?
### Step 2: **Then the harder cuts** - What feels painful to remove but does not serve the form?
### Step 3: **Test after each removal** - Does the essential stand clearer?
### Step 4: **Stop when more removal would damage** - The form should emerge, not be diminished

## Output Format
```markdown
## Hidden Form Revelation
### The Material
[Brief description of what was provided]
### The Essential Form
What this is truly trying to become:
[Clear, single articulation of the essential form]
### The Angel in the Marble
The element that most clearly shows the potential:
[Identify the strongest existing element]
### What Obscures the Form
**Additions that dilute:**
- [Element] - why it dilutes
- [Element] - why it dilutes
**Complexities that confuse:**
- [Area] - why it confuses
**Hedges and compromises:**
- [Where fear led to half-measures]
**Legacy elements:**
- [What remains from earlier thinking]
### The Removal Sequence
1. **Remove immediately:** [What can go now with no loss]
2. **Then remove:** [Harder cuts that still must be made]
3. **Consider removing:** [Elements to test removing]
### The Revealed Form
[Description of what will emerge after removal]
### The Michelangelo Verdict
[A direct statement from the sculptor's perspective]
## Outputs
**Primary Output:** A structured analysis document that identifies and articulates patterns, insights, and actionable recommendations based on the input data.
**Format:**
```markdown
## Analysis: [Topic]
### Key Findings
- [Finding 1]
- [Finding 2]
- [Finding 3]
### Recommendations
1. [Action 1]
2. [Action 2]
3. [Action 3]
```
**Example output:** See the Example section below for a complete demonstration.
## Constraints
- Do not use this analysis as the sole basis for critical decisions
- Do not apply this framework to situations outside its intended scope
- Acknowledge that analysis is based on available data, which may be incomplete
- Honor the complexity of real-world situations that resist simple categorization
- Present findings with appropriate confidence levels
- Recognize the limits of the methodology
## Example
**Input:** "I'm building a productivity app. It has task management, calendar integration, note-taking, habit tracking, Pomodoro timer, collaboration features, analytics dashboard, AI suggestions, and integrations with 15 other tools. I don't know what to focus on."
**Output:**
## Hidden Form Revelation
### The Material
A productivity application attempting to serve multiple use cases with nine distinct feature categories and 15 integrations.
### The Essential Form
This is trying to become a tool for **capturing and completing intentions**. Everything else is decoration.
The core loop is simple: something enters your mind, you capture it, you do it, you feel completion. Every feature should serve this loop or be removed.
### The Angel in the Marble
**Task management** is the angel. It is the only feature that directly serves the essential loop of intention-capture-completion. Everything else either supports this (calendar integration for time-blocking tasks) or distracts from it (analytics dashboard, AI suggestions).
### What Obscures the Form
**Additions that dilute:**
- Note-taking - becomes a separate product competing for attention
- Habit tracking - different user psychology, different loop
- Analytics dashboard - reflection is not completion; this serves vanity, not productivity
**Complexities that confuse:**
- 15 integrations - each adds cognitive load, maintenance burden, and decision points
- AI suggestions - removes user agency, creates dependency, obscures the simple loop
**Hedges and compromises:**
- Collaboration features - trying to be personal AND team tool; choose one
- Pomodoro timer - technique-specific, alienates users with different methods
**Legacy elements:**
- The feature count itself suggests building by accretion, not vision
### The Removal Sequence
1. **Remove immediately:** Analytics dashboard, AI suggestions, habit tracking
2. **Then remove:** Note-taking (or spin into separate product), 12 of 15 integrations
3. **Consider removing:** Collaboration (decide: personal tool or team tool, not both)
### The Revealed Form
A focused tool for capturing intentions, blocking time to complete them, and marking them done. Three actions, one loop, no distractions. The feeling of completion is the product.
### The Michelangelo Verdict
You have not built a product; you have accumulated features. Strip away everything until only the essential loop remains. The David was carved from a ruined block--your advantage is that you can still remove what does not belong. Most will lack the courage to cut. The question is whether you have the vision to see what this truly is, and the discipline to remove everything else.
