## Question the framing

The way a problem is framed limits which solutions appear possible. Asking how to explain a complicated workflow assumes the workflow must stay complicated. The better opportunity may be to remove a decision or make an intermediate step unnecessary. Separate the required outcome from assumptions introduced by the current solution.

Pay attention to what makes this case unusual. An awkward exception can reveal that the chosen structure is wrong. If an explanation needs constant qualifications, a different way of representing the idea may make those qualifications unnecessary.

## Explore beyond refinements

Refinements improve an existing approach; alternatives change how it works. Several versions can look different while relying on exactly the same idea. When refinements keep producing the same weakness, reconsider the underlying mechanism or representation. A hierarchy, for example, can obscure relationships that a flow makes obvious.

Give an unfamiliar approach enough thought to understand its strengths before comparing it with a polished draft. Familiarity and time already invested can make the draft seem better than it is. Keep useful discoveries from earlier attempts without treating their structure as a requirement.

## Borrow the reasoning

A useful reference shows a reason something works. Look for that reason. Progressive disclosure works when information becomes relevant at different times; copying its appearance into a task that needs simultaneous comparison can make the result worse. Ideas from another medium or domain can transfer when the underlying problem is similar.

Adapt the principle to the material. Different content may deserve different treatment, even within one consistent system. Consistency can come from shared conventions while the structure varies. Variation can express a meaningful difference or improve rhythm and attention across similar material. Repeating the same layout or transition can make a sequence feel monotonous even when each part works on its own.

## Judge the improvement

Constraints help distinguish promising ideas from arbitrary ones. Required content and behavior must survive a change of approach. Simplifying by silently dropping part of the problem is a false improvement; inventing facts to support an idea is another.

Look for a concrete advantage that justifies the change. Removing a source of confusion or an unnecessary dependency can matter more than visible novelty. Consider the new difficulties an idea introduces as well as the ones it resolves. A simple, familiar solution can still be the strongest choice after genuine exploration.
