# LinkedIn Optimization & Content Strategy
## Overview
A comprehensive guide to optimizing LinkedIn profiles and creating high-performing content. Covers the full stack: profile architecture (headline, about, featured section), content formats (carousel, text, document, article, poll, video), algorithmic best practices, engagement tactics, and performance analytics. Built for B2B professionals, founders, executives, and personal branding practitioners.
## When to Use
- **Profile optimization** — refreshing or building a LinkedIn profile from scratch
- **Content strategy** — planning LinkedIn-specific posts, carousels, and articles
- **Personal branding** — establishing thought leadership and authority in a niche
- **Lead generation** — using LinkedIn as a B2B inbound channel
- **Team training** — coaching executives on LinkedIn best practices
## Body
### Part 1: Profile Architecture
#### 1.1 Headline — 220 Characters
Formula: `[Role] | [Value Prop] | [Audience Benefit] | [Differentiator]`
**Templates:**
- **Founder/CEO**: "CEO @ [Company] | We help [audience] achieve [outcome] | Ex-[Company] | [Stat]"
- **IC**: "[Role] in [niche] | I help [audience] [outcome] | [Credential]"
- **Job Seeker**: "[Role] | [Specialty] | Open to [role] in [industry] | Former [company]"
**Checklist:** Front-load keywords, include value prop, quantify differentiator, avoid clichés (passionate, guru, ninja), use pipe separators.
#### 1.2 About Section — 4-Act Story Arc
```
ACT 1 — Hook (1-2 lines): "I've helped [companies] generate [$X] by [method]."
ACT 2 — Problem → Solution (3-5 lines): "Most struggle with [pain]. What works: [framework]."
ACT 3 — Social Proof (2-3 lines): 2-3 specific results.
ACT 4 — CTA + Human: "DM me '[keyword]' for free [resource]. Outside work: [hobby]."
```
**Length:** Min 800, sweet spot 1,200–1,800, max 2,600 chars. First 600 before "see more" truncation must contain the hook.
**Keywords:** 5–7 phrases your audience searches for, naturally placed.
#### 1.3 Featured Section
| Slot | Content | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Recent high-engagement post | Social proof |
| 2 | Carousel/PDF with high saves | Value demonstration |
| 3 | External link (blog, podcast, press) | Authority |
| 4 | LinkedIn Article | Depth |
| 5 | Testimonial/recommendation | Validation |
Refresh every 2–4 weeks.
#### 1.4 Photo & Banner
- **Photo**: Professional headshot, warm lighting, smile with teeth, 60–70% frame, color background
- **Banner**: 1584×396 px with value prop, logo, differentiator. Use Canva templates.
### Part 2: Content Formats & Templates
#### 2.1 Text Post
```
[Hook — contrarian take, data point, question, relatable struggle]
[Body — 3-5 short paragraphs, one idea each, white space]
[List or framework — bullets or numbered steps]
[CTA — question, drop emoji for resource, tag someone]
```
**Template A — Contrarian Take:**
```
"Everyone says [advice]. Here's why they're wrong."
Most [professionals] are told to [X]. But data says [Y].
What works:
• [Point 1 with data]
• [Point 2 with data]
• [Point 3 with data]
What's one piece of advice you'd challenge? 👇
```
**Template B — Relatable Struggle:**
```
"Nobody tells you that [hard truth]."
When I started, I thought [mistake]. It took [time] to realize [insight].
If you're struggling: → [Action 1] → [Action 2] → [Action 3]
What's your biggest lesson? ↓
```
#### 2.2 Carousel/PDF Post (Highest Save Rate)
**Slide Structure (8–12 slides):**
1. Hook + key benefit
2. Problem / pain point
3. Framework overview
4–8. Deep dive (one step per slide)
9. Case study / before-after
10. Key takeaway (3 bullets)
11. CTA
12. About / branding
**Design:** Pastel/brand colors, sans-serif 24pt+ headlines 16pt+ body, ≤30 words/slide, logo on every slide. Export as PDF.
**Caption:**
```
[Hook summarizing framework]
[2-3 sentences on why this matters]
"Save this carousel — you'll want it later 📌"
[Question]
```
#### 2.3 Document Post
Best for: checklists, cheat sheets, one-pagers, templates, worksheets.
**Caption:**
```
"Here's your [resource] for [outcome].
→ Save this post
→ Share with someone who needs it
What would you add? 👇"
```
#### 2.4 LinkedIn Article (Long-Form)
**Schedule:** 1 article per 2–4 weeks.
**Structure:** SEO headline → Subtitle → Hook (150–200 words) → 4–7 H2 sections (300–400 words each, bold key sentences, images every 2–3 sections, bullets) → Cited data → Conclusion + CTA → Bio with link.
#### 2.5 Poll Post
**Best:** Tue–Thu 9–11 AM. 7-day duration beats 14-day.
```
Question: [dilemma, trend, or preference]
Options: A) Obvious, B) Contrarian, C) Middle ground, D) Show results
[1-2 sentences context]
"Reply with WHY — the discussion is the value 💬"
```
Share results in a follow-up post.
#### 2.6 Video Post
**Specs:** 3–5 min, 1080×1080 or 1920×1080, upload natively.
**Structure:** 0:00–0:05 Hook → 0:05–0:30 Context → 0:30–2:00 Main content (2–3 points) → 2:00–3:00 Deep dive → 3:00–3:30 Summary + CTA → 3:30–4:00 Ask for follow/comment
### Part 3: Algorithm & Best Practices
#### 3.1 What the Algorithm Rewards
| Signal | Weight | How to Optimize |
|---|---|---|
| Early engagement (1st hour) | Very high | Post when audience active; reply immediately |
| Comment quality | High | Reply to all within 2h; long replies > emoji |
| Time spent on post | High | Scannable but substantive |
| Saves / Bookmarks | High | Actionable, save-for-later content |
| Shares with thought | Very high | Write shareable; ask for reposts |
| External clicks | Low–Mod | Put links in first comment, not body |
#### 3.2 Posting Cadence
| Frequency | Best For |
|---|---|
| 1x/week | Busy executives |
| 3x/week (Mon/Wed/Fri) | Individual contributors |
| 5x/week | Full-time creators |
| 7x/week | Diminishing returns |
**Best times:** Tue–Thu 8–10 AM, 12–1 PM, 5–6 PM. Mon 11 AM–12 PM. Fri 9–11 AM.
#### 3.3 Comment Strategy
```
YOUR POSTS → Reply to all within 1h, ask follow-ups, 2-3 line replies
OTHERS' POSTS → 15 min/day on 5-10 industry posts, add value, be in first 10 comments
```
#### 3.4 Connection Strategy
- Daily: 15–25 personalized requests. Never blank.
- Weekly: Engage 5 new connections' content before DM
- Monthly: Purge inactive (no post 90 days)
#### 3.5 LinkedIn SEO
Place keywords in: first 120 chars of headline → full 220-char headline → first 600 chars of About → current role description → top 3 skills.
## Common Pitfalls
- **5:1 value-to-promotion ratio**: More than 1 promo per 5 posts kills reach.
- **No comment engagement**: Scheduling without reply-time destroys reach.
- **External links in first 24h**: LinkedIn downranks posts with links. Put in comments.
- **Blank connection requests**: 70%+ decline rate.
- **Hashtag stuffing**: 3–5 max. 10+ reduces reach.
- **Copy-paste from other platforms**: LinkedIn-native content performs best.
- **Engagement bait**: "Like if you agree" triggers penalties. Use genuine questions.
- **Stale Featured section**: Refresh every 2–4 weeks.
