# Content Marketing Workflow
## Overview
An end-to-end content marketing workflow covering every stage from audience research and persona development through topic cluster strategy, editorial calendar management, content brief generation, production, distribution, repurposing, and performance measurement. This skill provides templates, checklists, and decision frameworks for building a scalable content engine that drives organic traffic, lead generation, and brand authority.
## When to Use
- Building a content marketing program from scratch
- Planning quarterly or monthly editorial calendars
- Creating content briefs for writers and freelancers
- Designing topic clusters and pillar page strategies
- Auditing existing content for gaps and repurposing opportunities
- Setting up content distribution and promotion workflows
- Measuring content performance and optimizing based on data
- Scaling content production without sacrificing quality
## Body
### 1. Audience & Persona Research
#### 1.1 Content Persona Template
For each target segment, create a content-specific persona:
```
## Content Persona: [Name]
**Demographics**
- Role/Title:
- Company Size:
- Industry:
- Experience Level:
**Content Preferences**
- Preferred formats: [e.g., long-form articles, video, infographics, podcasts]
- Content consumption time: [e.g., morning commute, lunch break, evening]
- Information sources: [e.g., LinkedIn, industry blogs, YouTube, newsletters]
- Content length preference: [e.g., 5-min read, 20-min deep dive]
- Decision-making style: [e.g., data-driven, peer recommendations, case-study reliant]
**Content Needs by Funnel Stage**
- Awareness phase: What educational topics interest them?
- Consideration phase: What comparisons/evaluations do they need?
- Decision phase: What proof points close the deal?
**Keywords They Search For**
- Head terms:
- Long-tail queries:
- Question-based queries:
**Content Gaps (what they can't find elsewhere)**
-
```
#### 1.2 Topic Discovery
Generate content topics through these sources:
| Source | Method | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| **Keyword Research** | Ahrefs/SEMrush keyword gap analysis | Monthly |
| **Customer Interviews** | "What questions did you have before buying?" | Quarterly |
| **Sales & Support Logs** | Top 10 questions from prospects and customers | Weekly |
| **Competitor Content** | What's working for competitors? (social shares, backlinks) | Monthly |
| **Industry Forums** | Reddit, Quora, Stack Exchange unanswered questions | Weekly |
| **Social Listening** | Trending topics on LinkedIn, Twitter/X, industry hashtags | Daily |
| **Internal Expertise** | Brainstorm with product, engineering, and leadership teams | Monthly |
| **News / Trends** | Google Trends, industry newsletters, regulatory changes | Weekly |
### 2. Topic Cluster & Pillar Page Strategy
#### 2.1 Cluster Architecture
```
Pillar Page (broad topic, comprehensive guide)
├── Cluster 1 (subtopic) → links to pillar
├── Cluster 2 (subtopic) → links to pillar
├── Cluster 3 (subtopic) → links to pillar
├── Cluster 4 (subtopic) → links to pillar
└── Cluster 5 (subtopic) → links to pillar
```
**Cluster rules:**
- One pillar page per core topic (2,500–5,000 words)
- 5–15 cluster pages per pillar (1,000–2,500 words each)
- Every cluster page links back to the pillar with relevant anchor text
- Pillar page links out to every cluster page
- All pages in the cluster target related keywords with shared search intent
#### 2.2 Pillar Page Structure
```
H1: Complete Guide to [Core Topic]
├── Introduction (why this topic matters)
├── H2: What Is [Core Topic]? (definition, overview)
├── H2: Why [Core Topic] Matters (benefits, statistics)
├── H2: Types of [Core Topic] (categorization)
│ ├── H3: Type 1 (with link to cluster page)
│ ├── H3: Type 2 (with link to cluster page)
│ └── H3: Type 3 (with link to cluster page)
├── H2: How to Implement [Core Topic] (steps, process)
├── H2: Best Practices (do's and don'ts)
├── H2: Common Mistakes (pitfalls to avoid)
├── H2: Tools & Resources (curated list)
├── H2: FAQ (5–10 related questions with brief answers)
└── H2: Conclusion (CTA to next step)
```
### 3. Editorial Calendar
#### 3.1 Calendar Template
| Week | Piece Title | Keywords | Type | Format | Author | Status | Distribution | Due Date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| W1 | "Complete Guide to X" | Head KW + 3 LSI | Pillar | Long-form | [Name] | Drafting | Blog, Newsletter, LinkedIn | Mon |
| W1 | "How to solve Y" | Long-tail KW | Cluster | Blog post | [Name] | Brief done | Blog, Twitter/X | Wed |
| W2 | "Infographic: Z stats" | Data-driven | Asset | Visual | [Name] | Research | Blog, Pinterest, LinkedIn | Fri |
#### 3.2 Content Mix Ratio
| Content Type | % of Output | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Cornerstone / Pillar | 10% | SEO foundation, authority building |
| Cluster / Supporting | 40% | Topic depth, keyword coverage |
| News / Trend / Timely | 20% | Freshness, topical authority |
| Thought Leadership / POV | 10% | Brand differentiation, backlinks |
| Repurposed / Updated | 20% | Maximize ROI on existing content |
**Publishing cadence by team size:**
| Team Size | Weekly Output | Quality Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Solo (1 person) | 1–2 pieces | Deep, research-heavy, fewer pieces |
| Small team (2–3) | 4–6 pieces | Balanced mix of pillars and cluster |
| Dedicated team (4+) | 8–12 pieces | Full funnel coverage, testing formats |
| Agency / scaled | 15+ pieces | Programmatic, templates, distribution |

## Common Pitfalls
1. **No content briefs:** Writing without a brief produces inconsistent quality and missed SEO targets. Always provide a structured brief.
2. **Inconsistent publishing cadence:** Posting 3 articles one week and nothing for 3 weeks kills audience trust. Set a sustainable cadence and stick to it.
3. **Creating without distributing:** The #1 mistake. Spend 20% of time creating, 80% distributing. A great piece with no distribution is invisible.
4. **Ignoring content repurposing:** One blog post can become 10+ pieces of content. Not repurposing is leaving 80% of your content ROI on the table.
5. **Writing for everyone (writing for no one):** Generic content targeting a broad audience fails. Write for a specific persona with specific pains.
6. **No SEO optimization upfront:** Fixing SEO after publishing is harder than building it in from the brief stage. Brief should include keyword, title, meta, headings.
7. **Vanity metrics over business impact:** Page views don't pay the bills. Track content-to-lead conversion, content-influenced revenue, and MQL attribution.
8. **No formal review process:** Publishing unchecked content damages credibility. At minimum: writer → editor → publish. For data-heavy pieces, add fact-check.
9. **Topic sprawl:** Covering too many unrelated topics prevents building topical authority. Go deep on fewer topics rather than shallow on many.
10. **Not updating older content:** Your best traffic often comes from pages published 1–3 years ago. Neglecting updates lets them decay in rankings.
