# Content Marketing Strategy
## Overview
Build a complete content marketing strategy: audience research, content vision, keyword targeting, editorial planning, content production workflows, distribution amplification, and measurement frameworks aligned to business growth.
## When to Use
- "Create a content marketing strategy for my business"
- "How do I plan content that actually grows my business?"
- "Build a content calendar that works"
- "Content SEO strategy"
## Phase 1: Foundation
### Step 1: Business & Audience Alignment
Connect content to business goals, then to audience needs.
**Business Goals → Content Objectives:**
- Revenue → Lead generation (top-of-funnel) + conversion (bottom-of-funnel)
- Brand awareness → Educational content, thought leadership
- Market education → Explainer content, problem/solution content
- Customer retention → Onboarding, advanced tutorials, community content
**Audience Research Framework:**
1. **Demographics**: Age, location, job title, industry, income level
2. **Psychographics**: Goals, challenges, values, content consumption habits
3. **Content preferences**: Formats they prefer (video, long-form, short posts)
4. **Pain points**: Specific problems preventing goals
5. **Information sources**: Where they get info (search, social, podcasts)
6. **Decision process**: How they buy (self-research, consult reviews, demo)
### Step 2: Brand Positioning & Voice
Document these three elements:
**Brand Positioning Statement:**
"For [target audience] who want to [desired outcome], [your brand] is the [category] that [unique differentiator] unlike [alternatives] which [reason to believe]."
**Content Vision:**
"What we want our brand to be known for in the minds of our audience."
Example: "The go-to resource for [topic] that helps [audience] achieve [outcome] without [common obstacle]."
**Content Personality Matrix:**
| Dimension | Low End | High End | Our Brand |
|-----------|---------|----------|-----------|
| Formal/Casual | Academic, formal | Conversational, casual | |
| Serious/Playful | Serious, professional | Fun, playful | |
| Authoritative/Helpful | Expert, directive | Friendly, supportive | |
| Abstract/Concrete | Conceptual, theoretical | Practical, actionable | |
### Step 3: Competitor Content Analysis
Audit 3-5 main competitors:
| Competitor | Top 3 Content Pillars | Best Performing Format | Engagement Rate (if available) |
|------------|----------------------|------------------------|-------------------------------|
| [Name] | 1. Tutorial content, 2. Industry news, 3. Tool reviews | Long-form blog posts | High |
| [Name] | 1. Case studies, 2. How-to guides, 3. Opinion | Video tutorials | Medium |
**Gap Analysis** (what they're missing):
- [List 3 content gaps you can fill]
## Phase 2: Content Planning
### Topic Research & Keyword Mapping
#### SEO Keyword Framework (use with seo-strategy skill)
| Keyword Type | Intent | Search Volume | Difficulty |
|--------------|--------|---------------|------------|
| Pillar keywords | High-level topic | 10K-100K | 50-80 |
| Cluster keywords | Subtopics | 1K-10K | 30-60 |
| Long-tail keywords | Specific queries | 100-1K | 10-40 |
| Branded keywords | Your brand terms | Variable | 0-20 |
#### Keyword Research Process
1. **Seed keywords**: 20-30 core topics related to your business
```
Example: SEO → "keyword research," "on-page SEO," "SEO audit," "SEO tools"
```
2. **Expand with long-tail**: Use `blog-idea-generator` and keyword tools
```
"how to do keyword research for SEO"
"SEO audit checklist for beginners"
```
3. **Map to funnel stages**:
- **Awareness** (top of funnel): Questions, "how to," "what is"
- **Consideration** (middle): Comparisons, reviews, "best," "vs"
- **Decision** (bottom): Pricing, demos, "buy," "sign up"
### Content Pillar Strategy
Define 3-5 pillars (content categories) covering your topic:
**Pillar Example: SaaS Marketing**
1. **Growth Channels**: SEO, content marketing, paid ads, partnerships
2. **Conversion Optimization**: Landing pages, email funnels, copywriting
3. **Retention & Expansion**: Onboarding, churn reduction, upselling
4. **Tools & Technology**: Stack reviews, integration guides, case studies
5. **Team & Process**: Hiring, management, workflows
**Pillar Page Structure:**
```
Pillar: [Topic]
├── Ultimate Guide to [Topic] (long-form pillar page)
│ ├── Subtopic 1 → Cluster content (blog post or video)
│ ├── Subtopic 2 → Cluster content
│ ├── Subtopic 3 → Cluster content
│ └── ...
└── Weekly content on subtopics
```
### Editorial Calendar Framework
#### Monthly Planning Template
| Week | Theme | Topics | Formats | Channels | Goals |
|------|-------|--------|---------|----------|-------|
| Week 1 | [Theme] | [3 topics] | [blog/video/social] | [channels] | [traffic/leads/sales] |
| Week 2 | [Theme] | [3 topics] | [formats] | [channels] | [goals] |
| Week 3 | [Theme] | [3 topics] | [formats] | [channels] | [goals] |
| Week 4 | [Theme] | [3 topics] | [formats] | [channels] | [goals] |
#### Content Mix Ratio
| Content Type | % of Total | Purpose |
|-------------|------------|---------|
| Educational (tutorials, guides) | 40% | Value-driven, top-funnel |
| Case Studies & Examples | 15% | Social proof, middle-funnel |
| Industry News & Trends | 15% | Thought leadership, awareness |
| Product Content | 15% | Bottom-funnel, conversion |
| Behind-the-Scenes | 10% | Brand personality, trust |
| Curated Content | 5% | Community building, relationship |

## Content Calendar Template
### Weekly Content Plan
| Day | Content | Channel | Status |
|-----|---------|---------|--------|
| Monday | "Problem" blog post | Blog + LinkedIn + Newsletter | Draft |
| Tuesday | LinkedIn summary post | LinkedIn | Ready |

| Thursday | YouTube video | YouTube + Blog | Filming |
| Friday | Email newsletter | Email | Composing |

## Common Pitfalls
1. **No connection to business goals** — content without a purpose is just noise
2. **Ignoring audience research** — assuming you know what they want vs asking
3. **Keyword stuffing instead of answering questions** — Google rewards helpful content
4. **No repurposing strategy** — each piece should yield 5-7 assets
5. **Inconsistent publishing** — weekly cadence matters more than volume
6. **Not tracking ROI** — measuring likes instead of pipeline contribution
7. **Topic drift** — content strays from core pillars and audience needs
8. **No distribution plan** — publishing without amplification is wasted effort
9. **Only promotional content** — audience needs 80% helpful, 20% promotional
10. **Skipping competitor analysis** — missing opportunities to differentiate
