Start with `fastlane match` so certificates and provisioning profiles are managed from a private shared repository. That keeps local machines and CI consistent and avoids storing certificates directly in the app repo.
In your Xcode build settings, make signing explicit for automated environments. If you are not relying on automatic signing in CI, set `PROVISIONING_PROFILE_SPECIFIER` and related signing values clearly so builds do not depend on whoever last opened Xcode.
In your `Fastfile`, define at least two lanes:
- `beta` for TestFlight delivery
- `release` for App Store production delivery
The `beta` lane should usually build the app, increment the build number, sign with the correct profile, and upload to TestFlight after successful merges to staging or your release branch. The `release` lane should build the production configuration and submit the signed artifact for App Store release.
Automate versioning instead of changing build numbers by hand. Use Fastlane actions like `increment_build_number` so every CI run produces a unique build artifact.
Also make export-compliance and App Store metadata part of the deployment flow where possible. If that is left manual, releases often get delayed during submission.
Good baseline:
- Use `Appfile` for app identifiers and Apple account context
- Use `Matchfile` for shared signing configuration
- Use `Fastfile` for `beta` and `release` lanes
- Use CI to trigger TestFlight uploads automatically
- Keep signing assets out of the main source repo
Common mistakes to avoid:
- manually managing certificates on each machine
- committing certificates or profiles into the app repository
- relying on manual version bumps
- using one ad hoc lane for every environment
If you follow that structure, iOS deployment becomes reproducible, auditable, and much less fragile in team or CI setups.
