# Oracle Distillation (OD) — Weak-Query Protocol & Noise-Threshold Theorem

**Source**: "Oracle Distillation", Ruohan Shen, Soonwon Choi (MIT), arXiv:2609.31596 [quant-ph], 25 Sep 2026. MIT-CTP/6118.

## Core Problem

Standard FTQC protects **known** circuits. Learning/sensing tasks query an **unknown** unitary (the oracle) — the interface to the system being learned — so FTQC cannot protect it: fault-tolerance presupposes knowing the target operation. Question answered: *does FTQC have a counterpart for learning and sensing?* Answer: yes, for Boolean-oracle families.

## Key Results

1. **Oracle Distillation protocol**: consumes T_OD queries to a noisy oracle Õ_f = E_f ∘ O_f and outputs a single high-fidelity "distilled" oracle Ô_f with ‖Ô_f − O_f‖_⋄ ≤ ε, **without learning the oracle label** f.
2. **Weak query primitive**: query the oracle on a codeword-superposition state that is (a) locally indistinguishable to the noise (Knill–Laflamme/EOC correctable) yet (b) retains overlap η ("matched query power") with the intended bitstring — the oracle answers only weakly, trading response strength for error-correctability.
3. **Query complexity** (adversarial weight-⌊αn/2⌋ noise, α ∈ (0, 0.16]):
   T_OD = O(N^(H(α)+2α) · (1/ln(1/ε))), where H(α) = binary entropy, N = 2^n domain size.
4. **Near-optimality lower bound** (Theorem 2′): any OD protocol that distills Grover oracles while keeping Knill–Laflamme conditions for weight-αn Z-errors needs T_OD = Ω̃(N^H(α)) queries (α ≤ 0.061). Upper bound exceeds this only by N^2α → near-optimal as α → 0. Reveals a **fundamental tension: distillation power vs error correctability**.
5. **Threshold theorem** (i.i.d. depolarizing, per-qubit rate p after each query): every Boolean-oracle problem whose quantum advantage is polynomial in N (query exponent q, budget exponent c) retains its advantage below a constant threshold p* = p_th(c, q) **independent of domain size**. Examples: Grover p* = 5.1×10⁻⁴; Simon p* = 3.4×10⁻²; k-forrelation p* from 3.4×10⁻² (k=2) → 3/4 (k→∞).
6. Reconciles with prior no-go theorems: those assume noise **correlated across all qubits**; OD's threshold holds for **i.i.d. per-qubit noise striking after each query** (typical errors touch few qubits).
7. Extensions: **fractional/continuous-time oracles** (noise before/during/after queries; algorithm acts mid-query via Hamiltonian H_f = Σ f(x)|x⟩⟨x| run for fraction θ) — distillable below the same threshold.

## Protocol Structure (two stages, 5 steps)

- **Stage 1 gadget** (no query overhead): n index qubits → length-3 repetition code; oracle acts on 3rd qubit of each block + response qubit; recovery kills all X-errors → converts arbitrary adversarial noise into **phase (Z) noise**.
- **Stage 2 circuit** (5 steps): **Encoding → Weak query → Response aggregation → Uncomputation → Recovery**, over L query blocks + 1 data block.
  - Aggregator: U_{w*} = Π_{W≥w*} ⊗ Z + (I−Π_{W≥w*}) ⊗ I — thresholds the response count W; f(x)=1 → binomial population peaked at ηL; f(x)=0 → W=0. Aggregation error ~ e^(−Θ(ηL)).
- **Four seed-state constructions** (query state |Θ(x)⟩ = X^x|Θ_s⟩; must satisfy EOC = Knill–Laflamme conditions for weight-2r Z-errors with uniform marginals on every ≤2r-bit subset, while maximizing η = p(0^n)):
  - C1 (r=1): |0^n⟩ + √n·|D_{(n+1)/2}⟩ (Dicke state), η = 1/(n+1) — optimal for r=1.
  - C2 (any r ≤ n/2): Pauli-Z-string expansion, exponent H(2α).
  - C3 (r = ⌊αn⌋): near-optimal η as α→0, exponent H(α)+2α.
  - C4: linear program for any finite n, r (explicit constants non-analytic).
- Optimality ceiling: η ≤ M_r − 1 (2r-wise independence bound); M_r = Σ_{j=0}^r C(n,j).

## Reusable Methodological Patterns

1. **Weak-interaction-for-robustness trade**: deliberately weaken a probe/interaction (response strength η) to gain a symmetry/protection property (error correctability) — then **coherently aggregate** many weak responses (majority/threshold via Π_{W≥w*}) into a full-strength response. Generalizes beyond QC: any "probe unknown system through noisy interface" setting (active learning, system identification under adversarial sensing).
2. **Label-agnostic distillation**: the protocol never learns the oracle label f — learning the label costs more queries than distillation itself. Pattern: for tasks needing *some* property of an unknown object, distill the needed functionality without identifying the object.
3. **Threshold-theorem decoupling**: design the algorithm as if the oracle were noiseless; OD delivers accurate-enough oracles; composition preserves advantage below threshold p*. Analogous to FTQC decoupling of algorithm design from error correction.
4. **Noise-model sensitivity in no-go theorems**: check whether a no-go assumes globally-correlated noise vs i.i.d. local noise — OD advantage exists precisely because typical i.i.d. errors have small weight.
5. **Repetition-code reduction to phase noise**: length-3 repetition code converts arbitrary single-qubit noise to pure Z-noise — a reusable reduction step before the main protocol.
6. **Dicke-state / Pauli-expansion seed states**: constructing superposition states with (i) uniform low-order marginals (indistinguishability to local noise, cf. t-designs/2r-wise independence) and (ii) large mass on a target point (query power) is a general state-design problem with a linear-programming formulation.

## Comparison Table (from paper Table I)

| Task | Label-agnostic | Error corr. | Functionality |
|------|------|------|------|
| FTQC | ✗ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Magic-state distill. | ✗ | ✓ | ✗ |
| Purity/Ent. distill. | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ |
| QSP | ✓ | ✗ | ✓ |
| **Oracle distillation** | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |

OD is the first to satisfy all three simultaneously — each pair's tension is what made prior tools sufficient.

## Implications

- Grover search retains quadratic advantage at low per-qubit error rates (p < 5.1×10⁻⁴): noisy-oracle search is NOT hopeless, contradicting folklore from correlated-noise no-gos.
- Simon: exponential separation weakens to polynomial under OD (T_C = Ω̃(T_Q^(1/2γ))) but classical post-processing stays poly(n) vs naive LPN N^Ω(p).
- Opens **robust computational sensing**: synthesized oracles from continuous sensing dynamics need only be *distillable*, not perfect.
- QEC can protect **unknown dynamics**, not just prescribed operations.

## Skill-Extraction Notes

- Trigger contexts: noisy oracle, quantum advantage under noise, fault-tolerant learning, robust sensing, query complexity with noise, threshold theorem, weak query, oracle synthesis from sensing dynamics.
- Pairs well with: `qadqn-trading` (Grover-based), `diophantine-quantum-oracle`, `oracle-multi-objective-rl-circuit-design` (all different senses of "oracle" — this skill is the query-complexity sense).
- Mathematical core reusable in isolation: seed-state LP construction (uniform marginals + point mass), binomial response-count aggregation, N^H(α) scaling analysis.
