# Google Ads Quality Score
Quality Score is Google's relevance signal, and it directly sets what you pay per click. Low QS on high-spend keywords means you are overpaying on every auction you enter for them.
## Instructions
1. Sort keywords by Quality Score, filter to high-spend
2. Triage the high-spend / low-QS keywords first — that is where the money is
3. Diagnose which of the three components is weak
4. Fix with relevance: tighter ad groups, message match, better landing pages
5. Ignore QS on low-volume long-tail where it barely affects spend
## Where to Focus
- Sort keywords by Quality Score, focus on **high-spend keywords scoring below 5**. These are the ones quietly inflating CPC.
- Do **not** chase QS on low-volume long-tail keywords — there it has minimal impact on total spend and is a distraction.
## The Three Components
| Component | What it measures | Lever |
|-----------|------------------|-------|
| Expected CTR | Will people click this ad for this query | Tighter ad-to-keyword relevance, stronger headline (see ad-copy) |
| Ad relevance | Does the ad match the keyword intent | Tightly themed ad groups (5-15 keywords, single intent); ad copy mentions the keyword intent |
| Landing page experience | Does the page deliver what the ad promised | Message-matched, fast, dedicated landing page — never the homepage |
## The Fix Is Almost Always Structure
Low QS usually traces back to:
- **Loose ad groups** — 30 unrelated keywords sharing one ad. Split into tight, single-intent groups.
- **Message mismatch** — ad promises "SOC 2-ready ERP integration", landing page is a generic homepage. Match the page to the ad headline.
- **Weak RSAs** — fewer than 3 RSAs, or low ad strength. Get to Good/Excellent (see ad-copy).
Fixing relevance lifts QS, which lowers CPC, which stretches the same budget further — and it improves conversion rate at the same time because the user gets what they expected.
## Examples
Example 1: "My CPCs are too high — how do I lower them?"
→ Sort by QS, find high-spend keywords below 5, diagnose expected CTR / ad relevance / LP experience, fix with tighter ad groups + message-matched ads and landing pages. Skip low-volume long-tail.
Example 2: "Should I worry about a QS of 4 on a keyword with 3 clicks a month?"
→ No. QS only matters where it moves real spend. Focus on high-spend keywords; ignore low-volume long-tail.
