This skill provides structured education to patients and families about Cushing's syndrome pathophysiology, treatment options, and post-remission expectations. It is triggered when a clinician encounters a new Cushing's syndrome patient or family needing disease information, such as at initial diagnosis or before treatment initiation.

# Patient and Family Education About Cushing's Syndrome
## STEP 1 — Gather Information
Confirm biochemical diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome (UFC, late-night salivary cortisol, dexamethasone suppression), determine etiology (pituitary MRI, petrosal sinus sampling, adrenal CT), note planned treatment modality, list comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, psychiatric disorders, osteoporosis), assess baseline knowledge, concerns, and health literacy of patient and family.
## STEP 2 — Rule In / Rule Out
Decide whether the patient/family requires initial education about Cushing's syndrome (new diagnosis, upcoming treatment, or post-remission) versus needing only reinforcement or no education; if education is needed, proceed to stratification, otherwise consider brief updates or skip.
## STEP 3 — Classify or Stratify
Stratify by treatment phase: pre-treatment (awaiting surgery/medical/radiation), post-treatment (immediate postoperative), or long-term remission (post-recovery); tailor education depth and focus to the phase.
## STEP 4 — Decide
Deliver education covering disease basics, specific treatment plan, expected benefits and risks, postoperative care, glucocorticoid withdrawal symptoms, recurrence monitoring, lifestyle modifications, and available support resources.
## Clinical Guardrails / Mimics / Pitfalls
Do not delay definitive treatment for extensive education; avoid unrealistic cure expectations; never omit discussion of lifelong monitoring and comorbidity management; refrain from giving specific medication dosing advice; ensure materials are culturally appropriate and health‑literacy sensitive.
## Concrete Clinical Example
A 42‑year‑old man with newly diagnosed ectopic ACTH syndrome from a bronchial carcinoid tumor is scheduled for preoperative ketoconazole; after confirming diagnosis and noting diabetes and hypertension, the clinician educates him and his wife about ectopic CS, ketoconazole side effects, glucose monitoring, and signs of adrenal insufficiency.
