# Operant Conditioning / Reinforcement Theory
## Purpose
Apply B.F. Skinner's operant conditioning to design reinforcement schedules that shape behavior over time. The four consequence types (positive reinforcement · negative reinforcement · positive punishment · negative punishment) and the five reinforcement schedules (continuous · fixed-ratio · variable-ratio · fixed-interval · variable-interval) are the engine behind habit-forming products, gamification, and conditioning-driven engagement loops. **Ethical use is non-trivial** — operant conditioning is also the engine behind slot machines and other addiction patterns.

## The Four Consequence Types

Note the technical meanings — "negative" doesn't mean "bad," it means "remove." Negative reinforcement (taking away something unpleasant when behavior occurs) is powerful and underused.

**Variable-ratio is the strongest schedule.** It produces the most behavior per reinforcement AND the most resistance to extinction. It also produces the most addiction-like behavior. The ethical bright line lives here.

## Core Principles
- **Reinforce desired behavior; rarely punish undesired behavior.** Positive reinforcement of alternatives is more effective and less risky than punishment.
- **Variable-ratio is powerful AND dangerous.** It's the engine of habit formation AND the engine of addiction. Use deliberately, not by accident.
- **Schedules should evolve.** Start continuous for acquisition; shift to variable-ratio for maintenance; eventually fade reinforcement entirely.
- **Negative reinforcement is underused.** Removing friction when a behavior occurs (auto-saving · streamlining workflows on engagement) is more sustainable than adding rewards.
- **Extinction is hard.** Once a behavior is established on variable-ratio, removing reinforcement produces an extinction burst (intensified behavior before decline). Plan for it.
- **Generalization vs discrimination.** Behaviors generalize to similar contexts; discrimination must be trained deliberately.
