# 2.1.5 Ensure dnsmasq services are not in use (Automated)

## Description

dnsmasq is a lightweight tool that provides DNS caching, DNS forwarding, and DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) services.

## Rationale

Unless a system is specifically designated to act as a DNS caching proxy or DHCP server, it is recommended that the service be disabled to reduce the potential attack surface.

## Audit Procedure

### Command Line

Run the following command to verify dnsmasq is not installed:

```bash
# dpkg-query -W -f='${binary:Package}\t${Status}\t${db:Status-Status}\n' dnsmasq
```

If installed, run:

```bash
# systemctl is-enabled dnsmasq.service
# systemctl is-active dnsmasq.service
```

Verify the service is not enabled and not active.

## Expected Result

dnsmasq should not be installed, or if installed, the service should be stopped and masked.

## Remediation

### Command Line

Run the following commands to stop, mask, and purge dnsmasq:

```bash
# systemctl stop dnsmasq.service
# systemctl mask dnsmasq.service
# apt purge dnsmasq
```

## Default Value

dnsmasq is not installed by default.
