# Managing Mixpanel
Manage and monitor Mixpanel product analytics — events, user profiles, funnels, and data governance.
## Discovery Phase
```bash
#!/bin/bash
MIXPANEL_API="https://mixpanel.com/api/2.0"
AUTH="Authorization: Basic $(echo -n "$MIXPANEL_SERVICE_ACCOUNT:$MIXPANEL_SECRET" | base64)"
PROJECT="project_id=$MIXPANEL_PROJECT_ID"
echo "=== Project Info ==="
curl -s -H "$AUTH" "https://mixpanel.com/api/app/projects/$MIXPANEL_PROJECT_ID" \
| jq '{name: .name, id: .id, timezone: .timezone}'
echo ""
echo "=== Event Names (top events) ==="
curl -s -H "$AUTH" "$MIXPANEL_API/events/names?$PROJECT&type=general&limit=20" \
| jq -r '.[]' | head -20
echo ""
echo "=== Custom Events ==="
curl -s -H "$AUTH" "$MIXPANEL_API/events/names?$PROJECT&type=custom&limit=10" \
| jq -r '.[]' | head -10
echo ""
echo "=== User Profile Properties ==="
curl -s -H "$AUTH" "$MIXPANEL_API/engage/properties?$PROJECT" \
| jq -r '.results | keys[:15][]'
```
## Analysis Phase
```bash
MIXPANEL_API="https://mixpanel.com/api/2.0"
TODAY=$(date -u +%Y-%m-%d)
WEEK_AGO=$(date -u -v-7d +%Y-%m-%d 2>/dev/null || date -u -d '7 days ago' +%Y-%m-%d)
echo "=== Event Volume (7 days) ==="
curl -s -H "$AUTH" "$MIXPANEL_API/events?$PROJECT&event=%5B%22%24mp_anything%22%5D&type=general&unit=day&from_date=$WEEK_AGO&to_date=$TODAY" \
| jq -r '.data.values | to_entries[] | .value | to_entries[] | [.key, .value] | @tsv' | column -t | head -10
echo ""
echo "=== Top Events by Volume ==="
| jq -r '.results[:10][] | [.name, .status, .tags // []] | @tsv' | column -t
```

## Anti-Hallucination Rules
1. **NEVER assume resource names** — always discover via CLI/API in Phase 1 before referencing in Phase 2.
2. **NEVER fabricate metric names or dimensions** — verify against the service documentation or `--help` output.
3. **NEVER mix CLI commands between service versions** — confirm which version/API you are targeting.
4. **ALWAYS use the discovery → verify → analyze chain** — every resource referenced must have been discovered first.
5. **ALWAYS handle empty results gracefully** — an empty response is valid data, not an error to retry.
## Counter-Rationalizations
| Shortcut | Counter | Why |
|----------|---------|-----|
| "I'll skip discovery and check known resources" | Always run Phase 1 discovery first | Resource names change, new resources appear — assumed names cause errors |
| "The user only asked for a quick check" | Follow the full discovery → analysis flow | Quick checks miss critical issues; structured analysis catches silent failures |
| "Default configuration is probably fine" | Audit configuration explicitly | Defaults often leave logging, security, and optimization features disabled |
| "Metrics aren't needed for this" | Always check relevant metrics when available | API/CLI responses show current state; metrics reveal trends and intermittent issues |
| "I don't have access to that" | Try the command and report the actual error | Assumed permission failures prevent useful investigation; actual errors are informative |
