# TiDB Analysis Skill
Analyze and optimize TiDB clusters with safe, read-only operations.
## MANDATORY: Two-Phase Execution
**You MUST follow this two-phase pattern. Skipping Phase 1 causes hallucinated database/table names.**
### Phase 1: Discovery (ALWAYS run first)

- Cluster component topology (TiDB, TiKV, PD)
- Databases and tables
- Table schemas with confirmed column names
### Phase 2: Analysis (only after Phase 1)
Only reference databases, tables, and columns confirmed in Phase 1.

## Anti-Hallucination Rules
- **NEVER reference a database or table** without confirming via SHOW commands
- **NEVER reference column names** without running DESCRIBE first
- **NEVER assume cluster topology** — always query `cluster_info`
- **NEVER guess store IDs** — always get from PD API
- **NEVER assume TiDB version features** — check version first
## Safety Rules
- **READ-ONLY ONLY**: Use only SELECT, SHOW, EXPLAIN, ADMIN SHOW, information_schema queries
- **FORBIDDEN**: DROP, ALTER, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, ADMIN commands that modify state without explicit user request
- **ALWAYS add `LIMIT`** to user table queries
- **Use `EXPLAIN ANALYZE`** carefully — it executes the query

## Counter-Rationalizations

| "I'll skip discovery and check known resources" | Always run Phase 1 discovery first | Resource names change, new resources appear — assumed names cause errors |
| "The user only asked for a quick check" | Follow the full discovery → analysis flow | Quick checks miss critical issues; structured analysis catches silent failures |
| "Default configuration is probably fine" | Audit configuration explicitly | Defaults often leave logging, security, and optimization features disabled |
| "Metrics aren't needed for this" | Always check relevant metrics when available | API/CLI responses show current state; metrics reveal trends and intermittent issues |
| "I don't have access to that" | Try the command and report the actual error | Assumed permission failures prevent useful investigation; actual errors are informative |
## Common Pitfalls
- **Auto-increment hotspot**: Sequential auto-increment IDs cause write hotspots — use `AUTO_RANDOM` or SHARD_ROW_ID_BITS
- **GC lifetime**: Long transactions can block GC — check `tidb_gc_life_time`
- **Statistics staleness**: Stale stats cause bad query plans — check stats health
- **Region splitting**: Large tables may need manual region splitting — check region distribution
- **TiFlash vs TiKV**: TiFlash is columnar (analytics), TiKV is row (OLTP) — route queries appropriately
- **Pessimistic vs Optimistic**: Default is pessimistic locking since TiDB 4.0 — check transaction mode
