# Apple HIG: Translate information hierarchy into containers

Use this family to select and compose topic procedures. Infer the platform and
requested work from the supplied project; preserve its framework and constraints.

## Work through the decision

1. Map records, groups, selection and supporting detail before choosing lists, collections, split views, tabs or disclosure. Open the procedure for the candidate container.
2. Separate grouping from navigation: a box organizes related content; a split view coordinates hierarchical panes; disclosure reveals optional detail. Do not use a container merely because space is available.
3. For resizing, large content and empty states, retain a coherent selection and route back. Identify minimum useful pane/content behavior from the task rather than fixed screenshots.
4. Deliver the hierarchy, selection model, adaptive layout decisions and a patch or verification matrix covering narrow and expanded states.
