# Remove assumptions that exclude participation

Read [Inclusion](../../references/inclusion.md). Inspect the actual copy, questions, imagery, characters, settings, and target language/region context. Identify the requested design, review, or adaptation artifact. Ground findings in supplied material; do not claim to represent a community's preferences without evidence.

Trace what a person must know, possess, identify as, or have experienced to participate. If the task assumes a car, college education, one family structure, or a specific sensory experience without need, change the question/example rather than treating the person as an exception. Define unavoidable specialist language and keep newcomer guidance learnable and skippable.

Choose language that addresses people directly and respectfully, avoids unnecessary gender references, and translates without idioms. If collecting gender or another sensitive characteristic is necessary, establish the real purpose and consider self-description/decline options and pronouns where relevant; remove collection when it has no task purpose. Do not invent a universally correct list of identity categories.

Review representation in context: vary bodies, ages, abilities, cultures, activities, and settings rather than attaching a stereotype to heroes, enemies, jobs, or affluence. Internationalize formatting and layout before translating strings. Respect language and region independently, including direction and cultural color meanings. Accessibility is part of participation; disability must not imply disinterest or inability.

**Worked transformation:** Before, a household organizer asks for “Mother” and “Father,” requires both, and illustrates every home as a large detached house. Decision: the task needs household contacts, not one family model. After, people add named contacts with optional relationships, the task works with one or several contacts, and imagery includes varied living situations.

Deliver revised copy/form/representation decisions or a scoped review, preserving the product's actual goal. Fail if the revision still forces an unnecessary identity/experience, excludes a valid household, or breaks regional formatting. Mark research/localization validation still needed; static inspection does not establish universal cultural acceptance.

Use [Writing](../apple-hig-writing/SKILL.md) for final language, [Privacy](../apple-hig-privacy/SKILL.md) for collection purpose, and [Accessibility](../apple-hig-accessibility/SKILL.md) for concrete access barriers.
