# Team Driving Operations
Team driving — two drivers operating the same truck — maximizes miles by keeping the truck moving 18-22 hours per day. Specialized operation with specific rules + economics.
## How team driving works
Two drivers alternate driving + sleeping:
- **Driver A** drives 8-11 hours while **Driver B** sleeps in sleeper berth
- They swap; **Driver B** drives while **Driver A** sleeps
- Net result: truck moves 18-22 hours per day vs 10-11 hours for solo
Typical schedule: 11-hour driving shifts with sleeper berth swaps.
## HOS rules for teams
Same HOS rules apply per driver, but the sleeper berth provision (49 CFR 395.1(g)) is critical:
- Each driver: 11 hours driving max + 14-hour on-duty window + 10-hour off-duty
- The 10-hour off-duty can be split using sleeper berth:
- **8/2 split**: 8 hrs sleeper + 2 hrs off-duty = 10 hrs effective off-duty
- **7/3 split**: 7 hrs sleeper + 3 hrs off-duty = 10 hrs effective off-duty
- Driving partner can use sleeper berth time INSIDE the other driver's 14-hour window

### Sleeper berth
- **Standard sleeper:** 36-42 inches
- **Mid-roof sleeper:** 60-72 inches (most common for teams)
- **Raised roof sleeper:** 75+ inches
- **Bunk arrangement:** Most teams use TWO bunks (driver/passenger; team can sleep simultaneously if needed)

- Refrigerator (some have full-size)
- Microwave or convection oven

Living in a cab with another person 24/7 = constant attention to cleanliness + boundaries.
### Skill differential
Some team drivers are stronger than others. Distribute load between strongest + weakest driver carefully.

1. **Random pairings without personality vetting.** Conflict + turnover.
2. **Lease-purchase with team.** Both must commit to the same lease; complicated if team breaks up.
3. **Insufficient sleeper berth.** Too small = sleep degradation.
4. **Pay structure that favors one over the other.** Resentment builds.
5. **Pushing team beyond sustainable miles.** 7,000+ mile weeks = burnout.
6. **No back-up plan when one driver becomes unavailable.** Truck idles.
7. **Different schedules** (one wants more home time than partner). Pre-team agreement critical.
