# Why Inspection Rates Vary By State
Inspection rates vary widely by state. Some states inspect 30%+ of CMVs annually; others under 10%.
## High-inspection states (top 10)
- Texas, California, Florida (huge volume + emphasis)
- New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania (NE corridor)
- Indiana, Illinois (Midwest crossroads)
- Ohio, Tennessee (border states)
## Why inspection rates vary
- State funding (Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program — MCSAP)
- Number of inspectors employed by state
- State motor carrier policy (some focus on weight enforcement vs CSA)
- Border vs interior states (border = more inspections)
- Hazmat focus states (specific to hazmat routes)
## Implications for carriers
- Operating in TX/CA/NY = more inspections expected
- Same trip mix can produce different inspection ratios across years
- CSA percentile is calculated against your peer group, which accounts for inspection volume
## Practical adjustments
- Train drivers on inspection-heavy states
- Ensure documents are bullet-proof on routes through high-inspection states
- Consider scheduling longer pre-trip time for those routes
- Verify CVSA decals if planning frequent high-inspection state trips
## What about new entrant carriers?
New entrants get inspected more frequently as FMCSA validates new operations. After 18 months of compliant operation, frequency typically drops.
## Compass dispatch awareness
Compass Vehicles + Routes module can flag dispatch through high-inspection states to allow proactive preparation:
- Verify driver docs before dispatch
- Check pre-trip status
- Confirm vehicle compliance recent
## CFR citations
- **FMCSA Inspection Statistics**
- **Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program**
## How Compass surfaces this
Searchable in Compass Ask. Runs against carrier fleet data when invoked from the relevant tracker. Read-only; no actions without explicit user approval.
