# CVSA Decals and Inspector Authority
A CVSA decal certifies a clean Level I inspection within the past 90 days. It signals to other inspectors that the vehicle has recently passed a thorough check.
## How CVSA decals work
- Issued after a clean Level I inspection (no violations)
- Valid for 3 months from inspection date
- Affixed to the vehicle by the inspector
- Different colors for different quarters
## What CVSA decals do (and don't)
- ✅ Signal recent clean inspection
- ✅ May reduce frequency of inspection at weigh stations
- ✅ Strong positive signal for insurance + customer review
- ❌ Do NOT guarantee no future inspection
- ❌ Do NOT prevent OOS violations during the 90-day period
- ❌ Do NOT exempt from FMCSA inspections
## Why some carriers chase decals
- Reduced inspection frequency saves driving time
- Reduced inspections reduce CSA risk
- Customer/broker tier-rating sometimes considers decals
## Why some carriers don't chase
- Decal isn't easy to obtain (Level I is comprehensive)
- Decals require willingness to be inspected (some drivers shy)
- Decal isn't a marketing badge for general public
## Tracking decals
Compass Inspections module:
- Logs CVSA decal awards
- Shows expiration date (90 days after issue)
- Alerts when decals are about to expire
## Pitfall
A vehicle with CVSA decal can still be cited for violations. The decal isn't a "free pass" — it's a signal to inspectors to potentially reduce inspection frequency, not eliminate it.
## CFR citations
- **CVSA Decal Program**
- **49 CFR § 396.9**
## How Compass surfaces this
Searchable in Compass Ask. Runs against carrier fleet data when invoked from the relevant tracker. Read-only; no actions without explicit user approval.
