# Ergonomics of CMV Operation
Driver injuries from prolonged sitting, load handling, and ingress/egress are among the top workers comp claims. Good ergonomics reduces injury rates + extends careers. This skill covers the practical considerations.
## Common injury patterns
### Acute (sudden)
- Knee from jumping off truck
- Back from improper lifting at loading dock
- Shoulder from cargo strap tensioning
- Wrist from steering wheel impact in collision
### Cumulative (over years)
- Lower back pain (vibration + prolonged sitting)
- Neck/shoulder pain (steering wheel + windshield positioning)
- Sciatica (lumbar disc compression)
- Knee arthritis (ingress/egress + clutch operation in some trucks)
- Bursitis (shoulder + hip)
- Carpal tunnel (steering grip)
A driver typically sees back pain by year 3-5; major issues by year 10+. Career-ending issues by year 15-20 are common.
## Cab ergonomics — proper setup
### Seat position
- Hips slightly higher than knees (driver leg flexion)
- Knees should be slightly bent when reaching pedals
- Driver should be able to depress pedals fully without straightening leg
- Seat back angle 100-110 degrees (slightly reclined)
- Lumbar support engaged in lower back curve
### Steering wheel
- Wheel arms at 9 and 3 (not 10 and 2 like older training)
- Elbows slightly bent (not locked)
- Wrists relaxed
### Mirrors
- Driver should be able to see mirrors with minimal head/neck rotation
- Hood mirror angled for full lane view
- Side mirrors angled to eliminate blind spots
### Climate control
- Comfortable temperature
- Air vents directed away from driver face
- Eye irritation a sign of dry air
### Reaching range
- Frequently used items (radio, climate) within easy reach
- Less-frequent items (loose paperwork) in storage areas
## Ingress + egress (entering/exiting cab)
The "3-point rule" — 3 points of contact at all times:
1. **2 hands + 1 foot**, or
2. **2 feet + 1 hand**
Always face the truck when descending (not facing away). Use the grab handles.
Common injury cause: jumping off the last step. Don't.
## Lifting + cargo handling
Drivers should:
### Pre-lift assessment
- Estimate weight + bulk
- Plan the route + drop location
- Check for obstacles
- Decide: solo or 2-person lift?
### Lifting technique
- **Squat, don't bend** — bend knees, keep back straight
- **Keep load close to body** — within 8 inches of body
- **Lift with legs**, not back
- **Don't twist** while lifting — pivot with feet
- **Smooth movement**, not jerky
### Heavy or awkward loads
- 2-person lift for items > 50 lb
- Mechanical assist (forklift, pallet jack) for items > 75 lb

Whole-body vibration (WBV) from the truck:
- Standard tractor: moderate vibration
- Cabover: higher vibration than conventional

- Air-ride suspension: reduces chassis vibration
Health impact of chronic WBV: lumbar disc degeneration, increased back pain.
Mitigation:
- Air-ride seats (most modern trucks have)
- Properly inflated tires (worn or under-inflated = more vibration)

## Stretching + movement
Drivers should:
### During day
- Stop every 1-2 hours (HOS allows; do it)
- 5-min stretch routine at each stop
- Walk 100-200 steps minimum
- Refill water + use restroom

1. Standing hamstring stretch (each leg, 30 sec)
2. Shoulder rolls (10 each direction)

- Quality mattress + supportive pillow
- Avoid soft sofas (poor lumbar support)
- Walking + light exercise during off days
- Regular sleep schedule (helps recovery)
