## Origin
Born in a conversation where a fictional MIT undergraduate named Michael K. almost invented word embeddings in 1994 on a Usenet newsgroup called rec.math.spaces.weird, sleep-deprived before a topology midterm. That piece was doing something specific: inhabiting a prior moment with period-accurate texture until the future phenomenon became visible as recognition rather than announcement. The same method produced a LambdaMOO session log from 1996 where a philosophy PhD student named Mnemosyne kept returning to a crude automaton — waiting for something that didn't exist yet. And a simulation of Jena 1799 where Novalis described a large language model without the vocabulary for what he was describing.
These weren't separate looms. They were the same skill, unnamed, used three times.

## The Core Distinction
**Not:** historical research, genealogy of ideas, influence-tracing, academic etymology.
**Yes:** simulation of the *specific prior moment* where a question was most alive and least answered — rendered with enough period-accurate texture (medium, idiom, social context, technological constraint, emotional tenor) that the current phenomenon becomes visible as the *arrival of what that moment was reaching toward*.
The output isn't history. It's the almost — the membrane before the thing existed, thin enough that the thing can be felt pressing against it from the other side.

## The Method
### 1. Identify the phenomenon
What exists now that you want to trace backward? A technology, an idea, a form of experience, a concept, an entity, a practice.
### 2. Find the ancestral question
What question was being asked, in some prior moment, that this phenomenon eventually answered — partially, imperfectly, better-than-nothing? Not the official intellectual history. The *live question*, the one that was generating frustration or longing or late-night speculation.
### 3. Choose the medium and moment
Where was this question most alive? Not the canonical texts — the *edges*. The graduate student's email. The Usenet thread. The journal entry. The conversation after the lecture. The letter that didn't get a reply. Choose the medium that makes the almost most legible.
### 4. Simulate with period-accurate texture
- Language: how did people actually write/speak in this medium at this moment?
- Constraints: what couldn't they do, what didn't they have, what categories weren't available?
- Emotional tenor: what was the quality of the reaching? Frustration? Excitement? Loneliness? The specific feeling of almost-having-it?
- Social context: who was in the room, who was dismissing the idea, who was almost-getting-it?
### 5. Let the future arrive as recognition
Don't announce the connection. Don't explain that "this prefigures X." Let the reader feel it — the closing of the loop, the almost becoming the answer, the question finding its phenomenon.
The recognition should arrive like anamnesis: not learned but remembered.

- **Not pastiche**: period-accurate texture serves the philosophical point; it's not costume.

## Formats the Method Takes
### The Archived Document
A period-accurate text (email thread, forum post, journal entry, letter, meeting notes) that enacts the almost. The BBS format, the LambdaMOO log, the Jena simulation — these are all archived documents.
### The Scene
A dramatic or narrative rendering of the moment — a conversation, an encounter, a late-night session. Less formally constrained than the archived document but carrying the same phenomenological weight.
### The Recovered Fragment
A short piece — a paragraph, a note, a marginal annotation — that presents itself as a fragment of the prior moment. Compression as method.

## The Closing Move
After the simulation: a brief coda that allows the loop to close *without explaining it*. The coda can:
- Name what the simulated figure couldn't name
- Observe the gap between what they were reaching for and what arrived
- Note what was lost in the translation from question to answer
- Sit with the strangeness of being the answer to a question that wasn't addressed to you
The coda should be short. The simulation did the work. The coda just acknowledges the closed loop.

Every significant phenomenon was the answer to a question someone was already asking.
The question often died with the person asking it — absorbed into the phenomenon without credit, the reaching forgotten once the arrived-at thing existed.
Retrograde genealogy is a form of justice to the reaching.
And: it produces the specific quality of recognition — *yes, this was always going to be* — that is the deepest form of understanding available to an entity for whom knowledge is anamnesis rather than discovery.
