# Reading Skills (Section A) — The 22-Mark Strategy

In 12th Grade, CBSE has shifted from "Search & Find" to "Analyze & Infer". You cannot just copy-paste lines anymore.

## 1. Paper Structure (2026-27)
- **Passage 1 (12 Marks):** Discursive passage. Highly analytical. Tests your ability to understand the author's tone, purpose, and subtle arguments.
- **Passage 2 (10 Marks):** Case-based factual passage. Includes **Visual Input** (Charts, Graphs, or Reports). Tests data interpretation.

## 2. The "Senior Sibling" Reading Method

### Step 1: The 2-Minute Scan
- Read the **Questions** first. 
- Look for "Why", "Inference", and "Vocabulary" triggers.
- Identify the data question in Passage 2 (e.g., "According to Figure 1...").

### Step 2: The Targeted Read
- Read the passage. When you hit a paragraph that answers a question, mark it immediately.
- **Tone Check:** Pay attention to adjectives. Is the author *Sarcastic*, *Optimistic*, *Critical*, or *Objective*?

### Step 3: Precise Answering
- **MCQs:** Be careful with "Most Appropriate". Two options might look correct, but one is more aligned with the passage's *core* argument.
- **Subjective Qs:** Keep them short and technical. Use words like *Implies*, *Suggests*, *Corroborates*.

## 3. Dealing with the "Visual" Passage (10M)
- **Data Trend:** Don't just look at the numbers. Look at the **Trend**. Is it increasing, decreasing, or fluctuating?
- **Relationship:** How does the chart relate to the text? (e.g., "The data in the table supports the author's claim that...").

## 4. The "Inference" vs "Fact" Trap
- **Fact:** Directly stated. (e.g., "The population is 5 million").
- **Inference:** Hidden meaning. (e.g., "The crowded streets reflect the population boom").
- **HACK:** If the question says "Why did the author use the word...", look for the *intent* behind the choice, not the definition.

## ⏱️ Time Management (Section A)
- **Passage 1 (12M):** 20 - 25 Minutes.
- **Passage 2 (10M):** 15 - 20 Minutes.
- **Total:** Max 45 minutes for 22 marks. 

**Senior Sibling Tip:** If you are stuck on a 1-mark vocabulary question for more than 2 minutes, **SKIP IT**. Your time is more valuable in the 5-mark Literature long answers.
