## Patent Search Strategy

### Search Sources
- **USPTO Patent Full-Text Database**: US patents and applications
- **Espacenet** (EPO): worldwide patent coverage
- **Google Patents**: best for keyword-based initial searches
- **Lens.org**: open access, cross-database
- **PatSnap / Derwent** (enterprise): analytics and citation mapping

### Search Methodology
1. Define the invention in function terms (not your specific implementation)
2. Identify: core concept, key components, novel aspects
3. Build keyword set: synonyms, technical terms, trade names for each concept
4. Search CPC/IPC classifications most relevant to the technology
5. Review 50-100 most relevant results for relevance
6. Expand search based on cited references and citing patents

## Claim Analysis

### Claim Hierarchy
- **Independent claims**: stand alone, define broadest scope, must all be valid
- **Dependent claims**: narrow the independent claim, easier to defend

### Claim Element Analysis
For FTO: infringing product/process must include EVERY element of an independent claim.
Missing even one element = no infringement of that claim.

## Patent Landscape Analysis

For a technology area, map:
1. Key assignees (companies/universities) and their portfolio size
2. Filing trend by year: is the space getting crowded or quieting down?
3. Most cited patents: foundational prior art (design around or license?)
4. White space: technology combinations with few or no filings
5. Expiring patents: valuable patents entering public domain
