## 🎨 What's New: Product Design Skill
**Automated Figma design handoff** - Reduce design-to-code time from 6-10 hours to 15 minutes (95% reduction).
### The Problem
Traditional design handoff workflow:
1. Designer sends Figma link
2. Developer manually reviews design (2-4 hours)
3. Developer extracts tokens manually (1 hour)
4. Developer searches codebase for existing components (1-2 hours)
5. Developer plans implementation (2-3 hours)
6. **Total: 6-10 hours** before writing first line of code
### The Solution: product-design Skill
Automated 5-step workflow:
```
"Review this design from Figma"
```
**What happens automatically**:
1. **Design Analysis**: Extract patterns, components, tokens from Figma MCP
2. **Codebase Audit**: Compare design vs implementation, detect drift
3. **Implementation Planning**: Generate phased task breakdown
4. **Task Assignment**: Create Navigator task document
5. **Handoff**: Present summary, ready to implement
**Result**: 15-20 minutes with complete implementation plan
---
## ✨ Key Features
### 1. Figma MCP Integration
**Local Server** (Recommended):
```bash
claude mcp add --transport http figma-desktop http://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp
```
**What it does**:
- Extracts design tokens (colors, spacing, typography, radius, shadow)
- Maps Figma components to code components
- Gets Code Connect mappings (requires Figma Enterprise)
- Captures component metadata and variants
**Fallback**: Works without MCP via manual design description
### 2. Design Token Automation
**DTCG Format Support** (W3C Design Tokens standard):
```json
{
"color": {
"primary": {
"500": {
"$value": "#3B82F6",
"$type": "color",
"$description": "Primary brand color"
}
}
}
}
```
**Features**:
- Automatic conversion from Figma variables
- Diff generation (added/modified/removed tokens)
- Tailwind CSS integration via @theme
- Style Dictionary build automation
### 3. Component Similarity Matching
**Prevents duplicate components**:
```
Figma: "StatBadge"
Existing: "Badge" (78% similarity)
Recommendation: Extend Badge with variant="stat" prop
Time Saved: 2-3 hours
```
**Algorithm**:
- Fuzzy name matching (Levenshtein distance)
- Structural similarity analysis
- Confidence scoring (>70% triggers reuse suggestion)
- Variant prop mapping
### 4. Design System Drift Detection
**Automatic audits**:
- Token alignment (in sync, drift, missing, unused)
- Component mapping validation
- Tailwind config recommendations
- Priority level assignment (critical/high/medium/low)
**Example Output**:
```
Token Health:
✅ In Sync: 87 tokens
⚠️ Drift Detected: 5 tokens (color.primary.600: #1D4ED8 → #2563EB)
❌ Missing in Code: 12 new tokens
🗑️ Unused in Design: 3 tokens
Priority: High
```
### 5. Phased Implementation Planning
**Generates Navigator task documents**:
```markdown
# TASK-XX: Dashboard Redesign Implementation
## Phase 1: Design Tokens (2 hours)
- Add 12 new tokens to design-tokens.json
- Run Style Dictionary build
- Update Tailwind @theme
## Phase 2: StatBadge Component (3 hours)
- Extend Badge with stat variant
- Add pulse animation
- Write tests
## Phase 3: DashboardGrid (5 hours)
- Create responsive grid organism
- Test responsive behavior
```
**Features**:
- Atomic design hierarchy (tokens → atoms → molecules → organisms)
- Complexity estimates per phase
- Acceptance criteria checklist
- Testing strategy
- Rollout plan
---

## 🐛 Known Limitations
### Figma MCP Requirements
**For Full Automation**:
- Requires Figma Desktop app (local server)
- OR Figma account + explicit URLs (remote server)
**For Code Connect**:
- Requires Figma Enterprise plan ($45/editor/month)
- Without it: Falls back to fuzzy matching (still works)
### Token Limits
**Large Designs**:
- Full screen extraction can exceed 350k tokens
- Use component-by-component approach
- Set `MAX_MCP_OUTPUT_TOKENS=100000`
### Beta Status
**Figma MCP**:
- Currently in open beta
- May have performance issues with very large files
- Features evolving

## 🛠️ Troubleshooting
### "Figma MCP tool not found"
**Cause**: MCP server not running or not configured
**Solution**:
1. Check Figma Desktop app is running (local server)
2. Verify MCP added: `claude mcp list`
3. Add if missing: `claude mcp add --transport http figma-desktop http://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp`
4. Restart terminal
5. **Fallback**: Use manual workflow (still provides value)
### "Token limit exceeded"
**Cause**: Large Figma selection returns >100k tokens
**Solution**:
1. Use metadata-first approach
2. Select components individually
3. Set `MAX_MCP_OUTPUT_TOKENS=100000`
4. Break design into smaller sections
### "No components found"
**Cause**: Component mapper can't find files
**Solution**:
1. Verify project root is correct
2. Check file extensions (tsx, jsx, vue)
3. Ensure components not in excluded dirs (node_modules)

## 🎓 Best Practices
### 1. Start Every Design Review Session
```
"Start my Navigator session"
→ Loads 2k-token navigator
→ Shows OpenTelemetry metrics
"Review this design from Figma"
→ product-design skill auto-invokes
→ Generates complete implementation plan
```
### 2. Use Figma MCP for Large Projects
**Benefits**:
- 100% token extraction accuracy
- Automatic component mapping (with Code Connect)
- No manual token list creation
**Setup Time**: 2 minutes (one-time)
### 3. Organize Design System Files
**Recommended Structure**:
```
.agent/design-system/
├── design-tokens.json (DTCG format)
├── ui-kit-inventory.json (component catalog)
├── component-mapping.json (Figma → code)
└── reviews/ (temporal design reviews)
```
**Created automatically** on first skill use.
### 4. Run Audits Regularly
```
"Check design system drift"
→ Compares latest Figma vs code
→ Detects token changes
→ Finds unused tokens
```
