# Automation Advisor - Interface Hardening

## Overview
Comprehensive hardening applied to make the interface production-ready with proper error handling, input validation, text overflow protection, and accessibility improvements.

## Changes Applied

### 1. Error Handling & Resilience

#### Network Retry Logic
- **fetchWithRetry()** utility with 3 automatic retries
- 10-second timeout for API calls
- 15-second timeout for audio transcription
- Exponential backoff between retries
- AbortController for proper timeout cancellation

#### Error Display
- **showError()** utility for consistent error messaging
- Non-blocking error banners at top of active screen
- Retry buttons for recoverable errors
- Clear, actionable error messages
- Automatic error cleanup on successful operations

#### HTTP Status Handling
- 400: Validation errors
- 401-403: Permission errors
- 404: Not found
- 500+: Server errors
- Timeout: Network errors

### 2. Input Validation

#### Text Input Constraints
- Maximum length: 1000 characters
- Minimum length: 1 character
- **sanitizeText()** utility: trims and truncates all user input
- Real-time character counter (shows warning at 950 chars)
- Empty input validation with clear feedback

#### Button State Management
- Disable submit buttons during API calls
- Prevent double-submission
- Re-enable on completion or error
- Loading indicators during processing

### 3. Text Overflow Protection

#### CSS Improvements

### 5. Voice Recording Hardening

#### Browser Compatibility
- Check for getUserMedia support
- Graceful fallback message if unsupported

#### Permission Handling
- **NotAllowedError**: "Microphone access denied..."
- **NotFoundError**: "No microphone found..."
- **Generic errors**: "Could not access microphone..."

#### Transcription Safety
- 15-second timeout
- Timeout error: "Recording may have been too long..."
- Network error: "Please try again or type..."
- Text appending with sanitization

### 6. Loading States

- **showLoadingMessage()**: Animated dots in conversation
- **removeLoadingMessage()**: Cleanup on response
- Shows during API calls
- Prevents confusion during async operations

### 7. Empty State Handling

- Multiple choice: "No options available"
- Multiple select: "No options available" + hide submit
- Proper null checks before rendering
- Defensive programming throughout

## Performance Optimizations

- Character counter uses simple textContent updates
- Sanitization happens once per input
- Error banners reuse single DOM element
- Conversation messages use efficient appendChild
- No unnecessary re-renders

## Future Improvements

Potential enhancements (not critical):
- Offline mode with service worker
- LocalStorage session recovery
- Progressive Web App (PWA) support
- i18n support for multiple languages
- More granular loading states
