# Wireless Technologies and RF: Antenna Integration, Certification, Low-Power Design, Provisioning and Onboarding, and RF Debugging
> **Part 4 of 6** of the *Wireless Technologies: RF, Standards, Building and Programming* reference (plugin `wireless-technologies-and-rf-engineering`), covering §17–§21. Sibling skills: `wireless-propagation-link-budget-modulation-antennas-and-spectrum` (§0–§5), `wireless-wifi-bluetooth-ble-nfc-and-rfid` (§6–§10), `wireless-thread-matter-lora-cellular-uwb-and-choosing` (§11–§16), `wireless-security-coexistence-and-positioning` (§22–§24), `wireless-reference` (§25–§30). Section numbers are shared across the set; a reference written as §N → `skill` points into that sibling skill.
>
> **Currency:** The physics is permanent and the mature standards are stable. Two areas are moving. See §25 → `wireless-reference` for Wi-Fi's next generation, and Bluetooth ranging.
> **⚠️ The domain where physics imposes limits that no amount of software cleverness
> removes — and where nearly every practical problem turns out to be either a link budget
> problem, an antenna problem, or a coexistence problem.**
>
> **Builds on an electromagnetism reference (fields, propagation, transmission lines) and
> complements a peripherals reference (§5's wireless HID), a computer-hardware reference
> (§9 → `wireless-wifi-bluetooth-ble-nfc-and-rfid` networking), and a cryptography reference (WPA3, pairing, key exchange).**
>
> **⚠️ GOTCHA** boxes mark where spec-sheet numbers and field reality diverge — which in RF
> is nearly everywhere.
>
> **The three ideas that organize this document:**
> 1. **⚠️ THE LINK BUDGET IS THE WHOLE GAME** (§2 → `wireless-propagation-link-budget-modulation-antennas-and-spectrum`). **Transmit power, antenna gains, path
> loss and receiver sensitivity determine whether a link works. Everything else is
> optimization within that envelope, and "add more power" is almost never the available
> lever because regulation caps it.**
> 2. **⚠️ SPECTRUM IS A SHARED, CONTESTED, REGULATED RESOURCE** (§5 → `wireless-propagation-link-budget-modulation-antennas-and-spectrum`, §23 → `wireless-security-coexistence-and-positioning`). **You do not own
> your channel. Unlicensed bands mean your neighbours, your own other radios, and
> physically unrelated devices all degrade you — and coexistence design is not optional.**
> 3. **⚠️ THE ANTENNA IS THE MOST NEGLECTED COMPONENT AND THE MOST DECISIVE** (§4 → `wireless-propagation-link-budget-modulation-antennas-and-spectrum`, §17).
> **A superb radio with a badly integrated antenna performs worse than a mediocre radio
> with a good one, and antenna problems are usually designed in months before anyone
> measures them.**
---
## §17. ⚠️ Antenna Integration
> **⚠️ §1 → `wireless-propagation-link-budget-modulation-antennas-and-spectrum`'s third organizing idea, and where most product RF problems are created.**
```
⚠️ ⚠️ FOLLOW THE MODULE VENDOR'S REFERENCE LAYOUT EXACTLY. ⚠️ They
characterized it; your improvisation is not characterized.
⚠️ This is the single highest-value rule here
⚠️ KEEPOUT ⚠️ NO copper — no traces, no ground pour, no
components — in the antenna clearance area, ⚠️ ON ANY LAYER
⚠️ THE GROUND PLANE IS THE ANTENNA'S OTHER HALF (§4) — ⚠️ its
size and shape change the tuning
⚠️ ⚠️ THE ENCLOSURE DETUNES THE ANTENNA. ⚠️ Plastic shifts
resonance; ⚠️ METAL enclosures and metallic paint can kill
the antenna entirely; ⚠️ and a BATTERY or LCD next to the
antenna is a large conductive object that changes everything
⚠️ TUNE WITH THE FINAL ENCLOSURE FITTED, not on a bare board
⚠️ ⚠️ THE HUMAN BODY is a lossy dielectric that detunes and
absorbs — ⚠️ test wearables ON A BODY or a phantom
⚠️ FEEDLINE 50 Ω controlled impedance, short, no stubs, with a
pi-network footprint for tuning
⚠️ MEASURING ⚠️ VNA for return loss and matching · anechoic
chamber for pattern and efficiency · ⚠️ TIS/TRP as the
figures that actually predict field performance
```

## §18. ⚠️ Certification
**⚠️ You cannot legally sell an unintentional or intentional radiator without this, and
first-time hardware teams routinely underestimate cost and schedule.**
```
⚠️ INTENTIONAL RADIATOR rules ⚠️ FCC Part 15C in the US ·
⚠️ RED (Radio Equipment Directive) in the EU · and national
equivalents everywhere you sell
⚠️ ⚠️ MODULAR CERTIFICATION IS THE BIG SAVING ⚠️ a pre-certified
module carries its approval into your product — ⚠️ PROVIDED
you follow its integration conditions exactly, including the
specified antenna and layout (§17). ⚠️ Deviate and you may
invalidate it entirely
⚠️ WHAT ALSO APPLIES ⚠️ unintentional emissions (Part 15B / EMC
directive) · safety (IEC 62368-1) · ⚠️ SAR for body-worn ·
RoHS/REACH/WEEE · battery shipping rules
⚠️ ⚠️ INDUSTRY certifications are SEPARATE and additional —
Bluetooth SIG qualification and a Declaration ID, Wi-Fi
Alliance certification, carrier approval for cellular (§13)
⚠️ ⚠️ THE PRACTICAL ADVICE: PRE-COMPLIANCE TEST EARLY. ⚠️ A cheap
near-field probe and spectrum analyser catch most problems
before an expensive chamber booking, and a failed formal test
costs both the retest fee and the schedule
```
---
## §19. Low-Power Design
**⚠️ The arithmetic that decides battery life**: ⚠️ **average current = (active current ×
active time + sleep current × sleep time) ÷ total time.**
> **⚠️ GOTCHA — SLEEP CURRENT USUALLY DOMINATES, and people optimize the wrong term.**
> ⚠️ **A device transmitting for 10 ms once a minute spends 99.98% of its life asleep, so a
> few microamps of leakage matters more than transmit efficiency.** **⚠️ Measure sleep
> current on the real board — a stray pull-up or a floating input can cost more than the
> radio.**
**⚠️ The protocol levers**: ⚠️ **BLE connection interval and slave latency; Wi-Fi TWT;
LoRaWAN class A; cellular PSM and eDRX** — ⚠️ **all of them trade responsiveness for
current.**
**⚠️ Battery reality**: ⚠️ **self-discharge, capacity falling with temperature, and PEAK
CURRENT capability — a coin cell can have plenty of capacity and still collapse under a
transmit pulse, which is why bulk capacitance next to the radio is standard.**
**⚠️ Measurement**: ⚠️ **a current profiler with microsecond resolution, because
averaging multimeters cannot see the pulses that matter.**
---
## §20. Provisioning and Onboarding
**⚠️ The genuinely hard UX problem in wireless products**: ⚠️ **how does a device with no
screen and no keyboard join a network whose credentials it doesn't have?**
**⚠️ The approaches**: ⚠️ **SoftAP (device becomes an AP, phone joins, hands over
credentials); BLE provisioning (⚠️ now the most common, because the phone has BLE anyway);
⚠️ WPS (deprecated — the PIN mode was badly broken); Wi-Fi Easy Connect / DPP (QR-code
based, the modern answer); ⚠️ NFC tap (§10 → `wireless-wifi-bluetooth-ble-nfc-and-rfid`); and out-of-band methods including
light-flicker and audio.**
**⚠️ Matter's commissioning flow** uses a QR or numeric code with a certificate chain
(§11 → `wireless-thread-matter-lora-cellular-uwb-and-choosing`).
**⚠️ The security requirements** are easy to get wrong: ⚠️ **credentials must not be
transmitted in clear, the provisioning window must close, and the DEVICE must be
authenticated too — many products authenticate only in one direction.**
**⚠️ Factory reset and re-provisioning** must exist and be discoverable, ⚠️ **and ownership
transfer is a real requirement people forget until a device is resold.**

## §21. ⚠️ RF Debugging
```
⚠️ THE TOOLS, in rough order of value per pound
⚠️ SPECTRUM ANALYSER ⚠️ see what is actually in the band —
including the interferer you didn't know about (§23)
⚠️ PROTOCOL SNIFFER ⚠️ nRF Sniffer for BLE · Wireshark with
a monitor-mode Wi-Fi adapter · Ubertooth
⚠️ VNA antenna matching and return loss (§17)
⚠️ SDR ⚠️ an RTL-SDR is remarkably capable for the price and
is the best entry point into seeing RF at all
⚠️ Current profiler (§19) · logic analyser for the digital side
⚠️ THE METHOD ⚠️ ISOLATE THE LAYER FIRST. ⚠️ Is it RF (link
quality), protocol (connection/negotiation), or application?
⚠️ RSSI and packet error rate together distinguish them
⚠️ ⚠️ TEST AT RANGE AND IN THE REAL ENVIRONMENT. ⚠️ Everything
works on a bench 30 cm apart, and that proves nothing
⚠️ THE CLASSIC CULPRITS ⚠️ antenna detuned by the enclosure (§17)
· ⚠️ ground plane too small · missing keepout · ⚠️ power supply
noise and inadequate decoupling · ⚠️ SWITCHING REGULATOR
harmonics landing in band · unshielded high-speed digital
lines · ⚠️ USB 3 noise desensitizing 2.4 GHz (§23)
⚠️ ⚠️ GOLDEN UNITS keep known-good reference hardware, because
"it got worse" is unanswerable without a baseline
