# Learning Paths, Tools, Glossary, Open Questions and Sources

> **Skill 9 of 9** of the *From Autograph to Your Bible: A Deep Dive into the Biblical Languages, Translation, Textual Criticism, Archaeology, and Historical Method* reference
> (plugin `biblical-languages-texts-archaeology-and-history`), carrying the source's front matter, Part VIII, *Learning Paths, Tools, Bibliography, Glossary*, and its sources: front matter, §35–§38 and sources — how to use the reference, learning paths, free tools, the glossary, the open questions and the sources consulted. Sibling skills:
> `bible-hebrew-aramaic-and-greek` (§1–§2 — Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic, Koine Greek and the Septuagint),
> `bible-latin-german-and-english` (§3–§5 — the Latin, German and English Bibles and the registers they created),
> `bible-how-translation-is-done` (§6–§7 — major-language committee translation and minority-language field translation),
> `bible-textual-criticism` (§8–§13 — copying errors, the reasoning, NT and Hebrew Bible textual criticism, the CBGM and the digital tools),
> `bible-archaeology` (§14–§22 — fieldwork, stratigraphy, dating, the science toolbox, epigraphy, the big debates and the 2026 finds),
> `bible-history-and-historical-method` (§23–§28 — the historian's method, ancient history, the historical-critical toolkit, the historical Jesus and reading a consensus),
> `bible-forgeries-looting-and-provenance` (§29–§31 — why provenance matters, the forgery and looting case files, and archaeology and politics),
> `bible-three-verses-through-the-pipeline` (§32–§34 — Isaiah 7:14, Deuteronomy 32:8 and Luke 2:1–2 through every discipline).
>
> Section numbers are **the source's own and shared across the whole set**: a reference written
> as §N → `skill` points into that sibling skill.

> **Confidence markers are the source's own**, and this skill keeps every one where the source
> put it: **\[settled\]** broad consensus across confessional and secular scholarship ·
> **\[majority\]** the mainstream position, with a live minority dissent worth knowing ·
> **\[contested\]** genuinely disputed among competent specialists; no consensus ·
> **\[as of 2026\]** a status fact likely to change (editions in progress, statistics, new
> finds). The source was compiled on September 30, 2026, and its \[as of 2026\] facts were
> checked against live sources that day. They have not been re-checked for this pack — treat
> each as dated, and verify it before relying on it.

> **Pack orientation** (the pack's words, not the source's): The source's front matter, Part VIII, and its sources and method note. The front matter is
> carried here whole — the confidence-marker table and the map of the document — because it
> describes the reference as a whole rather than any one part of it.

## About the source

> From Autograph to Your Bible: A Deep Dive into the Biblical Languages, Translation, Textual Criticism, Archaeology, and Historical Method
>
> *Research compiled September 30, 2026. Current-status facts (editions in progress, statistics, recent finds) were checked against live sources on that date; the durable material (grammar, method, history of the field) reflects the standard scholarly literature. A source list with URLs is at the end.*

## How to read a pointer

Every pointer in this set has the form **§N → `sibling-skill`**. §N is the source's own section
number, shared across all nine skills; the skill name is the file to open.

| Sections | Skill | What lives there |
|---|---|---|
| §1–§2 | `bible-hebrew-aramaic-and-greek` | Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic, Koine Greek and the Septuagint |
| §3–§5 | `bible-latin-german-and-english` | The Latin, German and English Bibles and the registers they created |
| §6–§7 | `bible-how-translation-is-done` | Major-language committee translation and minority-language field translation |
| §8–§13 | `bible-textual-criticism` | Copying errors, the reasoning, NT and Hebrew Bible textual criticism, the CBGM and the digital tools |
| §14–§22 | `bible-archaeology` | Fieldwork, stratigraphy, dating, the science toolbox, epigraphy, the big debates and the 2026 finds |
| §23–§28 | `bible-history-and-historical-method` | The historian's method, ancient history, the historical-critical toolkit, the historical Jesus and reading a consensus |
| §29–§31 | `bible-forgeries-looting-and-provenance` | Why provenance matters, the forgery and looting case files, and archaeology and politics |
| §32–§34 | `bible-three-verses-through-the-pipeline` | Isaiah 7:14, Deuteronomy 32:8 and Luke 2:1–2 through every discipline |
| front matter, §35–§38 and sources | `bible-reference` | How to use the reference, learning paths, free tools, the glossary, the open questions and the sources consulted |

## How to use this document

This is built as one connected system, not nine separate essays, because that is how the disciplines actually work. A translator cannot choose a word until a textual critic has decided which words are there; a textual critic weighs manuscripts that archaeologists dug up and palaeographers dated; historians use all of it and then argue about what it means. Part VII walks three real verses through the whole pipeline so you can see the gears mesh.

**Confidence markers used throughout**

| Marker | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| **\[settled\]** | Broad consensus across confessional and secular scholarship |
| **\[majority\]** | The mainstream position, with a live minority dissent worth knowing |
| **\[contested\]** | Genuinely disputed among competent specialists; no consensus |
| **\[as of 2026\]** | A status fact likely to change (editions in progress, statistics, new finds) |

**Map of the document**

- **Part I — The languages:** Biblical Hebrew (with Aramaic), Biblical Greek (Septuagint and New Testament), Biblical Latin, Biblical German, Biblical English
- **Part II — How translation is actually done** (major-language committees and minority-language field translation)
- **Part III — Textual criticism** (New Testament and Hebrew Bible)
- **Part IV — Archaeology**
- **Part V — History and historians**
- **Part VI — The ethics layer:** forgeries, looting, provenance
- **Part VII — Three verses through the whole pipeline**
- **Part VIII — Learning paths, tools, bibliography, glossary, sources**

## §35 Learning paths

### §35.1 If you want to read the languages

1. **Greek first or Hebrew first?** Greek has more resources and a more familiar grammar for English speakers; Hebrew is smaller and pays off quickly in the Old Testament. Either works.
2. **Hebrew:** Pratico & Van Pelt, *Basics of Biblical Hebrew*; Futato, *Beginning Biblical Hebrew*; or immersion/living-language approaches (Biblical Language Center, Randall Buth). Then graded readers and the *Reader's Hebrew Bible*.
3. **Greek:** Mounce, *Basics of Biblical Greek*; Decker, *Reading Koine Greek*; Black, *Learn to Read New Testament Greek*; immersive options (Polis Institute). Then the *UBS Reader's Greek New Testament*.
4. **Aramaic:** Van Pelt, *Basics of Biblical Aramaic*.
5. **Latin:** Wheelock's *Latin*; for Church Latin specifically, Collins, *A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin*. Then read the Vulgate Gospels alongside the Greek.
6. **Habit that matters most:** daily reading of real text, even a few verses, beats occasional intensive study.

### §35.2 If you want to understand textual criticism

- Bruce Metzger & Bart Ehrman, *The Text of the New Testament* (4th ed., 2005) — the standard introduction.
- Kurt & Barbara Aland, *The Text of the New Testament* (2nd ed.).
- Peter Gurry & Elijah Hixson (eds.), *Myths and Mistakes in New Testament Textual Criticism* (2019) — corrects common apologetic *and* skeptical errors.

- Ernst-August Gutt, *Translation and Relevance* (1991).
- Dave Brunn, *One Bible, Many Versions* (2013) — excellent on why "literal" is complicated.
- Leland Ryken, *The Word of God in English* (2002) — the case for essentially literal translation.
- Gordon Fee & Mark Strauss, *How to Choose a Translation for All Its Worth* (2007).
- David Daniell, *The Bible in English* (2003).
- Adam Nicolson, *God's Secretaries* (2003) — the KJV translators.
- Robert Alter, *The Art of Bible Translation* (2019).
- The **NET Bible's translators' notes** (free online) — the best practical window into translation decisions.

**Skills/reference packs consulted:** research-methodology (source evaluation and citation standards); evangelism-apologetics "Resurrection and Scripture" pack (manuscript-argument cautions: transmission ≠ veracity; check consensus claims).

*Method note: statements marked \[as of 2026\] were verified against the live sources above on September 30, 2026. Well-established historical and linguistic facts not tied to a listed source reflect standard reference works named in Part VIII. Where sources disagreed (e.g., manuscript counts, Tyndale's share of the KJV, translation statistics), this document reports the range and the reason for it rather than picking a single number.*
