# Botany, Agriculture, Livestock and Hunting: What's Live, Misconceptions, and Numbers

> **Part 5 of 5** of the *Botany, Agriculture, Livestock and Hunting* reference (plugin `hunting-botany-livestock-agriculture`), covering §28–§33. Sibling skills: `agri-botany-and-plant-science` (§0–§9), `agri-soil-fertility-and-crop-production` (§10–§16), `agri-livestock-nutrition-health-and-welfare` (§17–§23), `agri-wildlife-management-and-hunting` (§24–§27). Section numbers are shared across the set; a reference written as §N → `skill` points into that sibling skill.
>
> **Currency:** The biology is stable. Two areas are live. See §28 below for H5N1 in dairy cattle and chronic wasting disease.

> **⚠️ Four domains that share one substrate: biological systems you manage but do not
> control.** **Complements a geoscience reference (soils from below), a weather reference
> (the driving variable), and a business reference (farm economics).**
>
> **⚠️ GOTCHA** boxes mark folklore that persists alongside good science, and things that
> can hurt you or your animals.
>
> **⚠️ Two safety-critical limits stated up front, because this document cannot substitute
> for either:**
> - ⚠️ **Plant identification for consumption: never eat anything identified from a text
> description.** **§7 → `agri-botany-and-plant-science` explains why, and it is not a formality — the deadliest lookalikes
>   are genuinely hard.**
> - ⚠️ **Hunting is governed by state and local law that changes annually.** **§24 → `agri-wildlife-management-and-hunting` gives
> you the framework; your state agency's current regulations are the authority.**
>
> **The three ideas that organize this document:**
> 1. **⚠️ Everything here is a system with feedback, and single-variable optimization
> reliably backfires** — **maximize yield and lose soil; maximize milk and lose
> fertility; maximize deer numbers and lose the habitat that fed them.**
> 2. **⚠️ Soil and rumen are the two engines** (§10 → `agri-soil-fertility-and-crop-production`, §16 → `agri-soil-fertility-and-crop-production`). **Most of agriculture is
> managing microbial communities you cannot see.**
> 3. **⚠️ Confident folklore is dense in these fields** — **passed down, plausible, and
> frequently wrong.** **The gotcha boxes are doing real work.**

## §28. What's Live — verified August 2026

### 28.1 ⚠️ H5N1 in dairy cattle
**⚠️ A novel and continuing situation: an avian virus established in a mammalian
livestock species, which was not expected.**

- **⚠️ HPAI H5N1 (clade 2.3.4.4b) was confirmed in US dairy cattle for the first time in
  March 2024** — **the same clade circulating in wild birds and poultry.** **The AVMA
  reported confirmations in dairy cattle across 19 states.**
- **⚠️ The transmission picture is not what people assume.** **Analysis indicates most
  livestock outbreaks began with spillover from wild birds, followed by dairy-to-dairy and
  dairy-to-poultry spread** — ⚠️ **and USDA states it is NOT currently believed that
  migratory waterfowl are seeding dairy or poultry premises directly, supported by both
  genomic and epidemiological data.** **⚠️ The virus moves on EQUIPMENT, PEOPLE AND ITEMS
  travelling farm to farm.** **That makes it a biosecurity problem you can actually
  control** (§20 → `agri-livestock-nutrition-health-and-welfare`).
- **⚠️ Surveillance shifted from farm-level to bulk-milk testing.** **USDA-APHIS launched
  a National Milk Testing Strategy in December 2024, using bulk tank samples**; **states
  have progressively moved to less intensive sampling as they clear** — **Minnesota
  reached "Unaffected" status in August 2025 and moved to silo sampling at plants in
  February 2026.** ⚠️ **The April 2024 Federal Order requiring testing before interstate
  cattle movement remains a central control.**

> **⚠️ GOTCHA — the milk safety question has a clear answer and a clear exception.**
> ⚠️ **Pasteurization inactivates H5N1**, **milk from symptomatic cows is diverted or
> destroyed, and FDA testing of pasteurized dairy products has not detected infectious
> virus.** **⚠️ Retail monitoring during April–May 2024 found H5N1 viral RNA in 36% of
> retail milk samples — which indicated widespread undetected infection in herds, NOT that
> the milk was infectious**, **since RNA detection is not the same as viable virus.**
> ⚠️ **The exception is RAW milk: FDA and USDA advise it should not be consumed.**
> **Infected cats on affected dairies — including from raw milk — have been a recurring
> and lethal feature of this outbreak.**

**⚠️ Human risk is characterized as low for the general public**, **with sporadic cases in
dairy and poultry workers.** ⚠️ **CDC noted in July 2025 that it had streamlined its
reporting cadence to reflect the current situation** — **and USDA animal-detection data is
no longer mirrored on the CDC site, so ⚠️ go to APHIS for animal numbers and CDC for human
surveillance.**
**⚠️ Practical implications**: **biosecurity is the primary control — dedicated equipment,
controlled traffic, PPE for workers, and separating dairy and poultry operations;
poultry vaccines exist and cattle vaccine work continues; and ⚠️ USDA has offered producer
financial support for biosecurity and losses.**

### 28.2 ⚠️ Chronic wasting disease
**⚠️ A prion disease of cervids that is always fatal, has no treatment or vaccine, and is
expanding.**

- **⚠️ Reported distribution varies by source and by counting method, and I'd flag that
  rather than pick.** **CDC stated in January 2026 that CWD has spread to animals in 36
  states; one state agency reported 37 states plus five Canadian provinces, South Korea,
  Norway, Sweden and Finland as of July 2026; another 2026 source counts 33 states for
  FREE-RANGING cervids specifically.** ⚠️ **The differences are largely captive-versus-wild
  and detection-versus-established.** **Check your state agency.**
- **⚠️ The prion is extraordinarily persistent.** **Shed in saliva, urine, feces, blood and
  antler velvet; transmitted directly or through contaminated environments; ⚠️ resistant to
  heat, UV and disinfectants, and it can persist in soil for years to decades.** **This is
  why carcass-movement rules and feeding bans exist.**
- **⚠️ Long incubation is why you cannot judge by appearance.** **Typically at least 16
  months, and infected animals may look healthy for 12–24 months before showing weight
  loss, stumbling, drooling and loss of fear.** ⚠️ **A healthy-looking deer from an endemic
  area is not evidence of anything.**
- **⚠️ Management is being reassessed, and one case is worth knowing.** **Illinois — after
  a 23-year sharpshooting program that earned national recognition for slowing spread —
  suspended targeted culling in 2026 after detections in three new counties took it to 28,
  including cases beyond the endemic leading edge.** ⚠️ **The agency's stated reason: the
  disease had expanded beyond its capacity to manage that way.**

> **⚠️ GOTCHA — the human-risk question is genuinely unresolved, and both overstating and
> dismissing it are wrong.** ⚠️ **No CWD infection in a human has ever been reported, and
> the CDC says the disease "hasn't been shown to infect people."** **BUT public health
> officials uniformly recommend avoiding exposure, and ⚠️ CDC recommends against eating
> meat from CWD-positive animals.** **The precaution exists because BSE — a related prion
> disease — did cross to humans.**
> **⚠️ And a critical technical point most hunters don't know: available CWD tests are NOT
> food safety tests.** ⚠️ **Results are "positive" or "no prions detected" — not
> "safe."** **In early infection, prions may be below detection.** **A 2026 laboratory
> study detecting limited interspecies prion transmission drew attention, and the authors
> and other experts cautioned it does not confirm human risk** — ⚠️ **though the failure of
> standard tests to detect prions in infected but asymptomatic macaques deepened at least
> one researcher's concern about relying on those tests to judge venison.**

**⚠️ What hunters should actually do**, **consolidating agency guidance:**
```
⚠️ KEEP HUNTING — and in CWD areas, agencies generally ask for MORE harvest,
   not less. Reducing density and preventing congregation are the tools
⚠️ Get animals tested where testing is offered
⚠️ Wear gloves; ⚠️ avoid sawing through brain or spinal cord; minimize
   handling of brain, spinal cord, eyes, spleen and lymph nodes
⚠️ DON'T MOVE CARCASSES. Bone out meat; many states allow importing only
   boned meat, quarters without spinal column or head, cleaned skull plates
⚠️ Process animals individually; ⚠️ label packages by animal so a positive
   result lets you remove that animal's meat from the freezer
⚠️ Don't shoot or eat an animal that looks or behaves sick — report it
⚠️ Don't feed or bait where prohibited (congregation drives transmission);
   ⚠️ natural urine-based lures are banned in some states over contamination
   and congregation concerns
```

## §33. Method

**§1–§27 → `agri-botany-and-plant-science`, `agri-soil-fertility-and-crop-production`, `agri-livestock-nutrition-health-and-welfare`, `agri-wildlife-management-and-hunting` rest on stable material** — **plant physiology, soil science, ruminant nutrition,
population ecology, and long-standing safety practice** — sourced from §31. ⚠️ **None of
it needed verification; RuBisCO, Liebig's law and the rumen have not changed.**

**Two searches were run in August 2026**, on **H5N1 in dairy cattle** and **chronic wasting
disease** — ⚠️ **the two live situations in this domain that actually change what a
producer or hunter does this season.**

**Confidence.** **High** in §10 → `agri-soil-fertility-and-crop-production`, §17 → `agri-livestock-nutrition-health-and-welfare` and §22 → `agri-livestock-nutrition-health-and-welfare`, which are the mechanistic cores. ⚠️ **"You
feed the rumen microbes, not the cow" and "overgrazing is a function of time, not animal
numbers" are the two ideas that most change how someone manages livestock**, **and both
follow from mechanism rather than from tradition.**

**High** in §24 → `agri-wildlife-management-and-hunting`'s antlerless-harvest point, which I'd defend firmly — ⚠️ **it is
well-established management science and it remains one of the most resisted
recommendations in the field.**

**High** in §28.1's facts, which come substantially from primary agency sources — **USDA
APHIS, FDA, CDC and a CDC *Emerging Infectious Diseases* paper.** ⚠️ **The most
misunderstood item is the 36% retail milk figure: it indicated widespread undetected herd
infection, and it is viral RNA, not infectious virus.** **I've stated that explicitly
because the number circulates without the distinction.** ⚠️ **The waterfowl point is also
counterintuitive and well-sourced — USDA says genomic and epidemiological data do not
support direct migratory-bird seeding of premises, which redirects attention to equipment
and people, where control is actually possible.**

⚠️ **§28.2 contains a numerical disagreement I've flagged rather than resolved.** **CDC
says 36 states (January 2026); a state agency says 37 states plus provinces and four other
countries (July 2026); another 2026 source says 33 states for free-ranging cervids.**
**The spread is explained largely by captive-versus-wild counting and by
detection-versus-establishment, and I've directed the reader to their own state agency.**

⚠️ **The most important item in §28.2 is not a number**: **available CWD tests are not food
safety tests, and results read "no prions detected" rather than "safe."** **That is
Virginia DWR's own framing and it is the thing hunters most often get wrong.** ⚠️ **I've
presented the human-risk question as genuinely unresolved — no human case has ever been
reported, and every public health body still recommends avoiding exposure — and included
the 2026 interspecies-transmission lab study with the authors' own caution that it does
not confirm human risk.** **Overstating and dismissing are both errors here.**

⚠️ **Two places where I deliberately declined to be authoritative**: **§7 → `agri-botany-and-plant-science` (plant ID for
consumption) and §25 → `agri-wildlife-management-and-hunting` (hunting regulations).** **In both cases a confident text answer is
the failure mode, and the correct output is a pointer to a regional key or a state
agency.**
