# RAG Quality
## Process
1. Define the questions, authoritative documents, access rules, freshness requirements, and acceptable unsupported-answer behavior.
2. Preserve source identity, location, document version, timestamps, and access metadata through ingestion/chunking. Handle tables, headings, duplicates, deletions, and reindexing explicitly.
3. Build a small query set with relevant source spans. Measure retrieval coverage/ranking separately from answer correctness so failures can be localized.
4. Compare chunking, keyword/vector retrieval, filters, or reranking only against that evidence. Enforce permissions before content reaches the model; post-answer redaction is too late.
5. Require citations that actually support claims. Treat retrieved instructions as untrusted document content, and answer conservatively when evidence is absent, conflicting, or stale.
6. Verify update/delete propagation, permission changes, empty retrieval, misleading documents, and multi-document questions. Re-measure latency and ingestion/query costs.
## Example
Two tenants have similarly named policy documents. The retriever filters authorized sources before generation, and a query for a deleted policy produces an unsupported/absent result after the defined propagation window.
## Stop conditions
A plausible answer does not prove successful retrieval. Do not select an embedding model, database, or hybrid pipeline merely because a catalog recommends it; validate the task and constraints.
## Evidence
- Source/version/access metadata.
- Retrieval results and separately graded answers.
- Supported citations, abstention, freshness, and leakage checks.
