# nuke-cattery-inference
**Version:** 1.1.0
**Last Updated:** 2026-03-10
**Dependencies:** NukeX or Nuke Studio (not Nuke Indie/Non-Commercial), Python 3.10+, PyTorch 2.1.1+cpu
**Deep Reference:** `ClaudeCode/data/research/Nuke_ML_Inference_Research.md`
---
## Overview
NukeX's Cattery system lets you run PyTorch ML models inside Nuke via the Inference node. The workflow is:
1. **Export** PyTorch model to TorchScript (.pt) - via `script()` or `trace()`
2. **Compile** .pt -> .cat via CatFileCreator node (NukeX/Studio only)
3. **Infer** using the Inference node in any comp (base Nuke too)
**Requires NukeX or Nuke Studio for authoring.** Inference node works in any Nuke license.
**Nuke version -> PyTorch version mapping:**
| Nuke | PyTorch | Notes |
|------|---------|-------|
| 13.x | 1.6.0 | .cat NOT compatible with Nuke 14+ |
| 14.x | 1.12.1 | Forward-compatible to 15+ |
| 15.0 | 1.x | Cannot load 2.x TorchScript models |
| 15.1+ / 16.x / 17.x | 2.x | Use `torch==2.1.1+cpu` for tracing |
**Check Nuke's bundled version:** In Script Editor: `import torch; print(torch.__version__)`
---
## CRITICAL: Valid Channel Names
**Only 19 predefined channels are valid.** Custom names (like `da.r`, `other.r`, `other.1`) will cause `invalid map<K, T> key` errors.
| Category | Valid Channel Names |
|----------|-------------------|
| Color | `rgba.red` `rgba.green` `rgba.blue` `rgba.alpha` |
| Depth | `depth.Z` <- **capital Z** |
| Motion / Optical Flow | `forward.u` `forward.v` `backward.u` `backward.v` |
| Deep Compositing | `deep.front` `deep.back` |
| Disparity (Stereo) | `disparityL.x` `disparityL.y` `disparityR.x` `disparityR.y` |
| Masks | `mask.a` `rotopaint_mask.a` `mask_planartrack.a` `mask_splinewarp.a` |
**Common depth estimation setup:**
- Channels In: `rgba.red,rgba.green,rgba.blue`
- Channels Out: `depth.Z`
**Format:** Comma-separated, full dot-notation names (not set names like "rgb").

## Workflow 1: Export PyTorch Model to TorchScript
The tracing environment **must match Nuke's PyTorch version** (see table above).
### script() vs trace() - Which to Use
| Method | Use When | Limitation |
|--------|----------|------------|
| `torch.jit.script()` | Model source is accessible, no external libs | Requires type annotations, no inheritance |
| `torch.jit.trace()` | Complex model, external deps, inheritance | Freezes to one input resolution - Nuke **crashes** if fed different size |
**Prefer `script()`.** Use `trace()` as fallback only.
```python
# script() - preferred
model = MyModel()
model.eval()
scripted = torch.jit.script(model)
scripted.save("model.pt")
# trace() - fallback, fixed resolution
dummy = torch.zeros(1, 3, 1078, 1918) # C x H x W at EXACT runtime resolution
traced = torch.jit.trace(model, dummy, strict=False)
traced.save("model.pt")
```
**If using `trace()`:** The Inference node input MUST be reformatted to the exact traced resolution. Any other size causes a hard crash (not an error).
Create `trace_model_nuke.py` - the tracing environment must match Nuke's PyTorch version.
```python
"""
Trace a PyTorch model for Nuke CatFileCreator.
Run in the Nuke-compatible venv (PyTorch 2.1.1+cpu).
"""
import torch
import torch.nn as nn
# --- Configure for your model ---
HEIGHT = 1078 # Must be multiple of 14 for DA3 (77 x 14)
WIDTH = 1918 # Must be multiple of 14 for DA3 (137 x 14)
OUTPUT_PATH = "C:/models/my_model_1918x1078_fp32.pt"
class NukeModelWrapper(nn.Module):
"""
Wraps any model to match Nuke's tensor format:
Input: [1, C_in, H, W] float32, values 0.0-1.0
Output: [1, C_out, H, W] float32
"""
def __init__(self, model):
super().__init__()
self.model = model
# Normalize for ImageNet-pretrained models
self.register_buffer("mean", torch.tensor([0.485, 0.456, 0.406]).view(1, 3, 1, 1))
self.register_buffer("std", torch.tensor([0.229, 0.224, 0.225]).view(1, 3, 1, 1))
def forward(self, x: torch.Tensor) -> torch.Tensor:
x = (x - self.mean) / self.std
out = self.model(x) # model-specific output handling below
# --- Depth model: normalize output to 0-1 ---
dmin = out.amin(dim=(2, 3), keepdim=True)
dmax = out.amax(dim=(2, 3), keepdim=True)
return (out - dmin) / (dmax - dmin + 1e-8)
# Load your model
model = ... # your model loading code
wrapper = NukeModelWrapper(model)
wrapper.eval()
# Dummy input: [batch=1, channels=3, H, W]
dummy = torch.ones(1, 3, HEIGHT, WIDTH)
# [WARN] DO NOT use torch.jit.optimize_for_inference()
# It corrupts TorchScript serialization in PyTorch 2.1.1
# and produces "required keyword attribute 'value' undefined" on load.
with torch.no_grad():
traced = torch.jit.trace(wrapper, dummy, strict=False)
traced.save(OUTPUT_PATH)
print(f"Saved: {OUTPUT_PATH}")
# --- Verify reload works ---
loaded = torch.jit.load(OUTPUT_PATH)
loaded.eval()
with torch.no_grad():
test_out = loaded(dummy)
print(f"Reload OK - output shape: {test_out.shape}, max diff: {(test_out - traced(dummy)).abs().max():.6f}")
```
**PyTorch version setup (venv):**
```bash
python -m venv C:/models/nuke_env
C:/models/nuke_env/Scripts/activate
pip install "torch==2.1.1+cpu" --index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cpu
pip install safetensors huggingface_hub
```
**DA3 (Depth Anything V3) resolution rule:**
Dimensions must be multiples of 14.
- HD 1080p -> `1918 x 1078` (137x14, 77x14)
- UHD 2160p -> `3836 x 2156` (274x14, 154x14)
---
## Workflow 2: Compile .cat File in Nuke
**In Nuke - create a dedicated `cat_setup` script (don't build in your main comp).**
### Manual UI Steps
1. Create `CatFileCreator` node (Tab menu -> "CatFileCreator")
2. Connect it to a Read node with the same resolution as your traced model
3. Set knobs:
- **Torchscript File:** `C:/models/my_model_1918x1078_fp32.pt`
- **Cat File:** `C:/models/my_model_1918x1078_fp32.cat`
- **Channels In:** `rgba.red,rgba.green,rgba.blue`
- **Channels Out:** `depth.Z`
4. Click **"Create .cat file"**
5. Wait for completion (model loads on CPU - may take 2-10 min for large models, UI will be unresponsive)
### Via MCP Bridge (Python)
```python
# Build CatFileCreator via Nuke MCP bridge
# [WARN] Set modelFile LAST - loading the .pt blocks the Python thread
import nuke
# Step 1: Create structure (fast)
cat_node = nuke.createNode("CatFileCreator")
cat_node.setName("DA3_CatCreator")
cat_node['catFile'].setValue("C:/models/my_model.cat")
cat_node['channelsIn'].setValue("rgba.red,rgba.green,rgba.blue")
cat_node['channelsOut'].setValue("depth.Z")
# Step 2: Set model file (triggers load - may cause bridge timeout, expected)
cat_node['torchscriptFile'].setValue("C:/models/my_model.pt")
# Step 3: Execute
cat_node['createCatFile'].execute()
```
**Bridge timeout during model load is expected and normal.** The .cat creation still completes.
---
## Workflow 3: Inference Node in Comp
Depth estimation node graph:
```
Read (footage)
+--> Reformat (to model resolution, e.g. 1918x1078, type="to box", resize=distort)
+--> Inference (model: my_model.cat, channels: rgba->depth.Z)
+--> Reformat (back to project format, e.g. HD_1080)
+--> Shuffle (depth.Z -> alpha or rgba)
```
### Python Setup
```python
import nuke
def build_depth_inference_graph(read_node, cat_file_path,
model_w=1918, model_h=1078,
output_format="HD_1080"):
"""
Build depth estimation graph on any Read node.
Args:
read_node: Connected Nuke Read node
cat_file_path: Full path to compiled .cat file
model_w/h: Resolution the model was traced at
output_format: Target Nuke format name
"""
# Reformat to model resolution
rf_in = nuke.nodes.Reformat(inputs=[read_node])
rf_in['type'].setValue("to box")
rf_in['box_width'].setValue(model_w)
rf_in['box_height'].setValue(model_h)
rf_in['box_fixed'].setValue(True)
rf_in['resize'].setValue("distort")
rf_in.setName("DA_Reformat_In")
# Inference - set modelFile AFTER other props to avoid premature load
inf = nuke.nodes.Inference(inputs=[rf_in])
inf['useGPUIfAvailable'].setValue(True)
inf.setName("DA_Inference")
inf['modelFile'].setValue(cat_file_path) # triggers model load - set last
# Reformat back
rf_out = nuke.nodes.Reformat(inputs=[inf])
rf_out['type'].setValue("to format")
rf_out['format'].setValue(output_format)
rf_out['resize'].setValue("distort")
rf_out.setName("DA_Reformat_Out")
return rf_out
```
### .nk Template (paste into Nuke)
```
Reformat {
type "to box"
box_width 1918
box_height 1078
box_fixed true
resize distort
name DA_Reformat_In
}
Inference {
modelFile "C:/models/my_model_1918x1078_fp32.cat"
useGPUIfAvailable true
name DA_Inference
}
Reformat {
type "to format"
format "1920 1080 0 0 1920 1080 1 HD_1080"
resize distort
name DA_Reformat_Out
}
```
---
## Troubleshooting
### "invalid map<K, T> key"
**Cause:** Channel names in the .cat don't match what the Inference node is receiving at runtime.
**Checklist:**
1. Are all channel names in the 19-channel valid list? (no `da.r`, `other.r`, etc.)
2. Is depth output `depth.Z` (capital Z) not `depth.z`?
3. Did you use comma-separated full names? (`rgba.red,rgba.green,rgba.blue` not `rgb`)
4. Is the upstream data actually providing those channels? (check Info panel on Inference input)
5. Does the .cat need to be recompiled with corrected channel names?
---
### ".pt could not be loaded correctly by Torch"
**Cause:** `torch.jit.optimize_for_inference()` was applied during tracing. This corrupts TorchScript serialization in PyTorch 2.1.1.
**Fix:** Remove `optimize_for_inference` from your tracing script entirely. Reload-verify after tracing:
```python
loaded = torch.jit.load(OUTPUT_PATH)
```
If this raises an error, the trace is corrupted - retrace without `optimize_for_inference`.
---
### Output is all black / wrong values
**Cause:** Color space mismatch. Nuke feeds linear values; most models expect sRGB.
**Fix:** Add `Colorspace` node before Inference (`linear -> sRGB`) or handle it in the model wrapper's `forward()`. Also try enabling **Raw Data** on the Read node for footage that may be applying a LUT on read.
---
### Nuke frozen / "not responding" during CatFileCreator
**Cause:** Model loading is CPU-bound and blocks Nuke's main thread. This is expected for large models.
**What to do:**
- Wait - for a 1.3 GB model on CPU, allow up to 15-20 min
- Do not force quit (corrupts the in-progress .cat write)
- If Nuke has been frozen > 30 min, the model load likely failed - check if .cat was written
- GPU mode speeds this up significantly if a compatible GPU is available
---
### Channels In remapping to "rgba_extra.red"
**Cause:** Entering the set name `rgb` in Channels In instead of full channel names. Nuke internally remaps the set to non-standard names.
**Fix:** Always type full channel names: `rgba.red,rgba.green,rgba.blue`
---
### PyTorch version mismatch
**Symptom:** Model traces correctly but fails to load inside Nuke.
**Cause:** Tracing PyTorch version != Nuke's internal PyTorch version.
| Nuke Version | PyTorch Version |
|-------------|----------------|
| 15.0 | 1.x (cannot load 2.x models) |
| 15.1+ | 2.x |
| 16.x | 2.x |
| 17.x | 2.x |
**Fix:** Trace with `torch==2.1.1+cpu` for Nuke 15.1+.
---
### Nuke MCP bridge ECONNRESET during model setup
**Cause:** Loading a large .cat into the Inference node blocks the Python thread, causing the bridge socket to time out.
**Fix:** Split into two steps - create all nodes first, then set `modelFile` in a separate call:
```python
# Step 1 (fast, no timeout risk)
inf = nuke.nodes.Inference(inputs=[rf_in])
inf['useGPUIfAvailable'].setValue(True)
# Step 2 (may time out bridge - model still loads, comp still works)
inf['modelFile'].setValue("C:/models/my_model.cat")
```
---
## Cattery Installation: cat.json Required
For models to appear in the **Cattery toolbar**, a `cat.json` metadata file must exist alongside the `.cat` file. Without it the model won't show up, even if the .cat is valid.
```
~/.nuke/
Cattery/
DepthAnythingV2/
DepthAnythingV2.cat
cat.json <- required for toolbar discovery
```
When you create a .cat manually and place it in `~/.nuke/Cattery/`, create a minimal `cat.json`:
```json
{
"name": "DepthAnythingV3",
"version": "1.0",
"channels_in": ["rgba.red", "rgba.green", "rgba.blue"],
"channels_out": ["depth.Z"]
}
```
You can always reference the .cat directly in an Inference node by path even without `cat.json`.
---
## Additional Patterns
### Color Space: Nuke is Linear
Nuke passes **linear** pixel values to Inference. Most ML depth/segmentation models expect **sRGB**. If your model output looks wrong (too dark, blown out), add color space conversion:
```
Read (Raw Data checked) -> Colorspace (linear->sRGB) -> Reformat -> Inference -> Reformat -> downstream
```
Or add the conversion inside your model wrapper's `forward()`.
### Multi-Input: Combine into One Wide Image
Inference has ONE image input. To feed two images (e.g., optical flow needs frame A + frame B):
```python
# Shuffle frame A RGB + frame B RGB into 6 channels
# Channels In: rgba.red rgba.green rgba.blue forward.u forward.v backward.u
# (forward/backward channels used as vessels for the second image's RGB)
shuffle_node = nuke.nodes.Shuffle2(inputs=[frame_a_node, frame_b_node])
# Route frame_a.rgb -> rgba.rgb | frame_b.rgb -> forward.u forward.v backward.u
```
### GPU Warnings
- **GPU significantly faster** - enable "Use GPU" in Inference node
- **Sleep mode crash:** If the computer sleeps while Nuke is open with an active GPU model, CUDA drivers cannot recover. You must restart Nuke entirely.
- **Farm rendering:** Farm machines often lack GPU. Always test CPU fallback before sending to farm. Consider pre-rendering ML depth passes as a separate step.
