**Last Updated:** 2026-02-15
**Dependencies:** Houdini 20+

## CRITICAL: MANDATORY FIRST STEP
**ALWAYS understand VEX execution context:**
```vex
// Check what you're operating on
// Point Wrangle: Runs once per point (@ptnum)
// Primitive Wrangle: Runs once per primitive (@primnum)
// Detail Wrangle: Runs once for entire geometry
// Vertex Wrangle: Runs once per vertex (@vtxnum)
// Print current element (helps debug)
printf("Processing element: %d\n", @ptnum); // In point wrangle
```
**Why Critical:**
- **Context Matters**: Wrong wrangle type = unexpected results or errors
- **Performance**: Running on points vs primitives has different costs
- **Attribute Access**: Some attributes only available in specific contexts (e.g., @vtxnum in vertex wrangle)
---
## QUICK START
### **Most Common Use Case: Attribute Manipulation**
**Goal:** Modify point positions or attributes using VEX
**Step 1: Create Wrangle Node**
```
Create Point Wrangle node in SOP network
Connect input geometry
```
**Step 2: Write VEX Code**
```vex
// Example: Move points up based on X position
@P.y += @P.x * 0.5;
// Add color attribute
@Cd = {1.0, 0.0, 0.0}; // Red color
// Create custom attribute
f@custom_scale = fit(@P.y, -5, 5, 0.5, 2.0);
```
**Step 3: Verify Output**
```vex
// Debug: Print values for first 10 points
if (@ptnum < 10) {
printf("Point %d: P=%v, scale=%f\n", @ptnum, @P, f@custom_scale);
}
```
**Step 4: Check Geometry Spreadsheet**
```
Open Geometry Spreadsheet (RMB on node -> Spreadsheet)
Verify new attributes exist: custom_scale, Cd
Check values are in expected range
```
**Expected Output:**
```
Points moved vertically based on X
All points have red color (Cd = 1,0,0)
custom_scale attribute ranges from 0.5 to 2.0
```

## STANDARD WORKFLOWS
### **Workflow 1: Noise and Procedural Deformation**
**Use When:** Creating organic variation, terrain, or animated effects
**Steps:**
1. **Basic Noise Pattern**
```vex
// Point Wrangle
// Simple noise displacement
vector noise_pos = @P * chf("frequency");
float noise_val = noise(noise_pos);
@P += @N * noise_val * chf("amplitude");
```
**Why:** Displaces points along normals using Perlin noise
2. **Animated Noise**
```vex
// Add time component for animation
vector noise_pos = @P * chf("frequency");
float time = @Time * chf("speed");
float noise_val = noise(noise_pos + time);
@P.y += noise_val * chf("amplitude");
```
**Why:** Time-based noise creates flowing animation
3. **Turbulence (Fractal Noise)**
```vex
// Multi-octave noise for complex patterns
vector pos = @P * chf("base_freq");
float turbulence_val = 0;
int octaves = chi("octaves");
float lacunarity = chf("lacunarity");
float gain = chf("gain");
for (int i = 0; i < octaves; i++) {
turbulence_val += noise(pos) * gain;
pos *= lacunarity;
gain *= 0.5;
}
@P += @N * turbulence_val * chf("amplitude");
```
**Why:** Fractal noise creates more natural, detailed patterns
4. **Curl Noise (Fluid-like Motion)**
```vex
// Creates divergence-free vector field
vector pos = @P * chf("frequency");
vector curl = curlnoise(pos + @Time * chf("speed"));
@P += curl * chf("amplitude");
```
**Why:** Curl noise produces swirling, fluid-like motion
**Success Criteria:**
- [x] Noise creates visible deformation
- [x] Frequency parameter controls pattern scale
- [x] Amplitude controls deformation strength
- [x] Animation plays smoothly (if time-based)
---
### **Workflow 2: Geometry Analysis and Conditional Logic**
**Use When:** Selecting or modifying geometry based on criteria
**Steps:**
1. **Group by Attribute**
```vex
// Point Wrangle
// Group points above certain height
if (@P.y > chf("threshold")) {
i@group_high = 1;
}
// Group points by noise value
float n = noise(@P * 0.5);
if (n > 0.5) {
i@group_noisy = 1;
}
```
2. **Distance-Based Selection**
```vex
// Get reference position from channel
vector ref_pos = chv("reference_position");
// Calculate distance
float dist = distance(@P, ref_pos);
// Set group based on distance
if (dist < chf("radius")) {
i@group_near = 1;
// Scale points based on distance
float falloff = fit(dist, 0, chf("radius"), 1, 0);
f@scale = falloff * chf("max_scale");
}
```
3. **Neighbor Analysis**
```vex
// Find nearby points
int nearby[] = nearpoints(0, @P, chf("search_radius"));
// Count neighbors
i@neighbor_count = len(nearby);
// Average neighbor positions
if (len(nearby) > 0) {
vector avg_pos = {0, 0, 0};
foreach (int pt; nearby) {
avg_pos += point(0, "P", pt);
}
avg_pos /= len(nearby);
// Move towards average (flocking behavior)
@P = lerp(@P, avg_pos, chf("cohesion"));
}
```
4. **Attribute Transfer from Primitives**
```vex
// Point Wrangle
// Find closest primitive
int prim_num;
vector prim_uvw;
float dist = xyzdist(1, @P, prim_num, prim_uvw); // Input 1
// Get attribute from that primitive
vector prim_color = prim(1, "Cd", prim_num);
@Cd = prim_color;
// Store distance
f@closest_dist = dist;
```
**Success Criteria:**
- [x] Groups created based on conditions
- [x] Conditional logic produces expected selection
- [x] Neighbor queries return valid points
- [x] Attribute transfers work correctly
---
### **Workflow 3: Vector Math and Transformations**
**Use When:** Rotating, scaling, or orienting geometry procedurally
**Steps:**
1. **Rotate Points Around Axis**
```vex
// Point Wrangle
// Define rotation axis and angle
vector axis = chv("rotation_axis");
axis = normalize(axis);
float angle = radians(chf("angle"));
// Create rotation matrix
matrix3 rot = ident();
rotate(rot, angle, axis);
// Get pivot point
vector pivot = chv("pivot_position");
// Apply rotation
@P -= pivot;
@P *= rot;
@P += pivot;
// Rotate normal if it exists
if (hasattrib(0, "point", "N")) {
@N *= rot;
}
```
2. **Orient Copies Using up Vector**
```vex
// Point Wrangle (for use with Copy to Points)
// Calculate direction from current point to next
vector target_pos = chv("target_position");
vector dir = normalize(target_pos - @P);
// Define up vector
vector up = {0, 1, 0};
// Create orthonormal basis
vector z_axis = dir;
vector x_axis = normalize(cross(up, z_axis));
vector y_axis = cross(z_axis, x_axis);
// Build orientation matrix
matrix3 orient = set(x_axis, y_axis, z_axis);
// Store as quaternion for Copy to Points
vector4 quat = quaternion(orient);
p@orient = quat;
// Or as matrix attribute
3@transform = orient;
```
3. **Scale Along Direction**
```vex
// Create non-uniform scale matrix
vector scale_vec = chv("scale"); // {x_scale, y_scale, z_scale}
matrix3 scale_mat = ident();
scale(scale_mat, scale_vec);
// Apply scale
@P *= scale_mat;
```
4. **Matrix Composition (Translate, Rotate, Scale)**
```vex
// Build TRS matrix
vector translate = chv("translate");
vector rotate_deg = chv("rotate"); // Degrees
vector scale_vec = chv("scale");
// Create individual matrices
matrix xform = ident();
// Scale first
scale(xform, scale_vec);
// Then rotate
rotate(xform, radians(rotate_deg.x), {1, 0, 0});
rotate(xform, radians(rotate_deg.y), {0, 1, 0});
rotate(xform, radians(rotate_deg.z), {0, 0, 1});
// Then translate
translate(xform, translate);
// Apply to point
@P *= xform;
```
**Success Criteria:**
- [x] Rotations produce expected orientation
- [x] Scaling preserves desired proportions
- [x] Matrices combine correctly (TRS order)
- [x] Orient attribute works with Copy to Points
---
## ADVANCED TECHNIQUES
### **Technique 1: Custom VEX Functions**
**Use Case:** Reusable code patterns across multiple wrangles
**Implementation:**
```vex
// Define function in Detail Wrangle (run before point wrangle)
// Or in external .h file included via VEXpressions folder
function float smootherstep(float edge0, edge1, x) {
float t = clamp((x - edge0) / (edge1 - edge0), 0.0, 1.0);
return t * t * t * (t * (t * 6.0 - 15.0) + 10.0);
}
function vector hash33(vector p) {
// Hash function for pseudo-random values
vector p3 = frac(p * vector(0.1031, 0.1030, 0.0973));
p3 += dot(p3, {p3.y, p3.z, p3.x} + 19.19);
return frac(({p3.x, p3.z, p3.y} + {p3.y, p3.x, p3.z}) * {p3.z, p3.y, p3.x});
}
// Use in Point Wrangle
vector rand_offset = hash33(@P) - 0.5;
@P += rand_offset * chf("randomness");
float smooth_val = smootherstep(0.0, 1.0, @P.y);
@Cd = set(smooth_val);
```
**Parameters:**
- Define functions once, use everywhere
- Can include from external .h files
- Functions support all VEX types (float, vector, matrix, etc.)
**Output:**
Reusable, maintainable VEX code with custom operations
**Interpretation:**
- Use for complex math (easing functions, hashing)
- Better than duplicating code across wrangles
- Include files: `#include <custom_functions.h>`
---
### **Technique 2: Volume Sampling and SDF Operations**
**Use Case:** Sample volumes, use SDFs for procedural modeling
**Detailed Documentation:** See [reference/volumes_and_sdf.md](reference/volumes_and_sdf.md)
**Quick Example:**
```vex
// Point Wrangle (with volume connected to second input)
// Sample volume density
float density = volumesample(1, "density", @P);
// Use density to control point color
@Cd = set(density);
// SDF (Signed Distance Field) operations
// Sample SDF volume
float sdf = volumesample(1, "surface", @P);
// Points inside surface (sdf < 0), outside (sdf > 0)
if (sdf < 0) {
i@group_inside = 1;
}
// Move points to surface
float dist = abs(sdf);
if (dist > 0.001) {
vector gradient = volumegradient(1, "surface", @P);
@P -= normalize(gradient) * sdf; // Project to surface
}
```

## TROUBLESHOOTING
### **Issue 1: "Syntax Error: Unexpected token"**
**Symptoms:**
- VEX code won't compile
- Red error message in wrangle node
**Cause:**
VEX syntax error (missing semicolon, mismatched braces, wrong type).
**Solution:**
```vex
// [FAIL] WRONG: Missing semicolon
@P.y = @P.x * 2.0
// [OK] CORRECT
@P.y = @P.x * 2.0;
// [FAIL] WRONG: Type mismatch
@P = 5.0; // @P is vector, can't assign float
// [OK] CORRECT
@P = {5.0, 5.0, 5.0};
// Or
@P.y = 5.0; // Assign to component
// [FAIL] WRONG: Wrong vector syntax
vector v = (1, 2, 3);
// [OK] CORRECT
vector v = {1, 2, 3};
```
**Verification:**
Check error message line number, fix syntax, code compiles without errors.
---
### **Issue 2: "No Results from VEX Code"**
**Symptoms:**
- VEX code compiles but doesn't affect geometry
- No visible changes
**Cause:**
Not writing to attributes, or wrong wrangle type for operation.
**Solution:**
```vex
// [FAIL] WRONG: Local variable doesn't affect geometry
float height = @P.y + 5.0; // Only in memory, not written
// [OK] CORRECT: Write back to attribute
@P.y += 5.0; // Modifies actual geometry
// Or create new attribute
f@height = @P.y + 5.0;
// [FAIL] WRONG: Point Wrangle trying to modify primitives
// (Point wrangle operates on points, not primitives)
// [OK] CORRECT: Use Primitive Wrangle
// Context: Primitive Wrangle
@Cd = {1, 0, 0}; // Sets primitive color
```
**Check:**
- Use Geometry Spreadsheet to verify attributes exist
- Ensure wrangle context matches what you're modifying
---
### **Issue 3: "Performance Issues with VEX"**
**Symptoms:**
- Wrangle node very slow to cook
- High frame cook times
**Cause:**
Inefficient VEX code (expensive operations in loops, unnecessary queries).
**Solution:**
```vex
// [FAIL] SLOW: Repeated expensive operations
for (int i = 0; i < 1000; i++) {
int pts[] = nearpoints(0, @P, 5.0); // Query every iteration
}
// [OK] FAST: Query once
int pts[] = nearpoints(0, @P, 5.0);
for (int i = 0; i < len(pts); i++) {
// Use pts array
}
// [FAIL] SLOW: Detail wrangle when point wrangle would work
// (Detail wrangle processes ALL geometry in one thread)
// [OK] FAST: Use point wrangle (parallelized per point)
// [FAIL] SLOW: Large search radius in nearpoints
int pts[] = nearpoints(0, @P, 1000.0); // Checks too many points
// [OK] FAST: Reasonable search radius
int pts[] = nearpoints(0, @P, 5.0);
```
**Optimization Tips:**
- Use point/primitive wrangles (parallel) over detail wrangle when possible
- Minimize nearpoints/xyzdist search radius
- Avoid nested loops with geometry queries
- Cache expensive calculations outside loops
---
### **Issue 4: "Attribute Not Found"**
**Symptoms:**
- Warning: "Attribute 'name' not found"
- Code references non-existent attribute
**Cause:**
Trying to read attribute that doesn't exist on geometry.
**Solution:**
```vex
// [FAIL] WRONG: Assume attribute exists
vector vel = v@velocity; // Error if velocity doesn't exist
// [OK] CORRECT: Check first
if (hasattrib(0, "point", "velocity")) {
vector vel = v@velocity;
@P += vel * @TimeInc;
} else {
// Provide default
@P += {0, 1, 0} * @TimeInc;
}
// Or create attribute if missing (Detail Wrangle)
if (!hasattrib(0, "point", "velocity")) {
addpointattrib(0, "velocity", {0, 0, 0});
}
```
**Prevention:**
- Check attribute existence with hasattrib()
- Create attributes explicitly before using
- Use Geometry Spreadsheet to see available attributes
---
