**Version:** 1.0.0
**Last Updated:** 2026-02-15
**Dependencies:** Houdini 20+

## CRITICAL: MANDATORY FIRST STEP
**ALWAYS verify geometry inputs before procedural operations:**
```vex
// In Attribute Wrangle before scatter/copy operations
// Check geometry validity
int pt_count = npoints(0);
int prim_count = nprims(0);
printf("Input geometry: %d points, %d primitives\n", pt_count, prim_count);
// Verify normals exist (required for orientation)
if (!hasattrib(0, "point", "N")) {
printf("WARNING: Missing normals - add Point/Primitive Normal SOP\n");
}
```
**Why Critical:**
- **Empty Geometry**: Scatter/copy on empty geometry produces no output
- **Missing Normals**: Copy to Points without normals = no orientation control
- **Scale Issues**: Geometry too large/small affects scatter density and distribution
---
## QUICK START
### **Most Common Use Case: Scatter and Copy Instances**
**Goal:** Scatter points on surface and copy geometry to those points
**Step 1: Create Base Surface**
```
Grid SOP (or any surface geometry)
- Rows: 50
- Columns: 50
- Size: 10x10
```
**Step 2: Scatter Points**
```
Scatter SOP 2.0
- Input: Grid
- Total Count: 1000
- Relax Iterations: 10 (distributes evenly)
- Generate Normals: ON
```
**Step 3: Create Instance Geometry**
```
Box SOP (or custom geometry to copy)
- Size: 0.5, 0.5, 0.5
- Center: 0, 0.25, 0 (pivot at bottom)
```
**Step 4: Copy to Points**
```
Copy to Points SOP
- Target Points (Left Input): Scatter output
- Source Geometry (Right Input): Box
- Attributes:
- scale: Vary size (create f@scale on scatter points)
- orient: Control rotation (p@orient quaternion)
```
**Step 5: Add Variation**
```
// On scatter points (Attribute Wrangle before Copy to Points)
// Random scale
f@scale = fit01(rand(@ptnum), 0.5, 1.5);
// Random Y rotation
vector axis = {0, 1, 0};
float angle = rand(@ptnum + 123) * 360;
p@orient = quaternion(radians(angle), axis);
// Random color (transferred to copies)
@Cd = rand(@ptnum + 456);
```
**Expected Output:**
```
1000 box instances scattered on grid
Varying sizes (0.5x to 1.5x)
Random Y rotations
Random colors
Even distribution (due to relax iterations)
```
---
## STANDARD WORKFLOWS
### **Workflow 1: Advanced Scattering with Density Control**
**Use When:** Need non-uniform distribution based on attributes or textures
**Steps:**
1. **Create Density Attribute**
```vex
// Attribute Wrangle on base surface (Point Wrangle)
// Method 1: Procedural density (noise)
float density = noise(@P * 0.5) * 0.5 + 0.5; // 0 to 1
f@density = density;
// Method 2: Distance-based density
vector center = {0, 0, 0};
float dist = distance(@P, center);
f@density = fit(dist, 0, 5, 1.0, 0.1); // Dense at center
// Method 3: Texture-based density (requires UV)
// Assumes texture in COP network or file
// vector color = texture("op:/img/density_map", @uv.x, @uv.y);
// f@density = color.r; // Use red channel
```
2. **Scatter with Density Attribute**
```
Scatter SOP 2.0
- Total Count: 5000
- Density Attribute: density
- Generate Normals: ON
- Relax Iterations: 5
```
**Why:** Higher density values = more points in that region
3. **Visualize Density**
```vex
// Point Wrangle (for debugging)
@Cd = set(f@density); // Grayscale based on density
```
4. **Multi-Object Scattering**
```vex
// Point Wrangle on scatter points
// Assign object IDs based on density or random
if (f@density > 0.7) {
i@object_id = 0; // Object type 0 (trees)
} else if (f@density > 0.3) {
i@object_id = 1; // Object type 1 (rocks)
} else {
i@object_id = 2; // Object type 2 (grass)
}
// Or fully random
i@object_id = int(fit01(rand(@ptnum), 0, 3)); // 3 object types
```
**Success Criteria:**
- [x] Scatter density varies based on attribute
- [x] More points in high-density areas
- [x] Object IDs assigned for multi-object copying
- [x] Distribution looks natural
---
### **Workflow 2: Packed Primitives for Instancing Performance**
**Use When:** Copying thousands of instances, need viewport/render performance
**Steps:**
1. **Create Source Geometry as Packed Primitive**
```
[Source Geometry - Box/Custom Mesh]
v
Pack SOP
- Pack Geometry: ON
- Transfer Attributes: Cd, N, uv (if needed)
```
**Why:** Packed primitives store geometry once, instance multiple times (memory efficient)
2. **Scatter Points**
```
Grid -> Scatter SOP 2.0
- Total Count: 10,000+
- Generate Normals: ON
```
3. **Copy Packed Primitives**
```
Copy to Points SOP
- Target Points: Scatter output
- Source Geometry: Packed primitive
- Pack and Instance: ON
- Attributes: scale, orient, Cd
```
**Why:** Creates lightweight instances instead of full geometry copies
4. **Add Variation to Packed Instances**
```vex
// Point Wrangle on scatter points
f@scale = fit01(rand(@ptnum), 0.5, 2.0);
p@orient = quaternion(radians(rand(@ptnum + 123) * 360), {0, 1, 0});
@Cd = rand(@ptnum + 789);
// Packed primitives will respect these attributes
```
5. **Unpack for Export (if needed)**
```
Unpack SOP (at end of chain, only if exporting to other software)
- Transfer Attributes: ON
```
**Performance Benefits:**
```
Regular copies: 10k boxes = 10k x geometry memory
Packed instances: 10k boxes = 1 geometry + 10k transforms
Memory reduction: ~95% for simple geometry
```
**Success Criteria:**
- [x] Viewport displays 10k+ instances smoothly
- [x] Memory usage significantly lower than full copies
- [x] Render time improved
- [x] Variations (scale, rotation, color) working
---
### **Workflow 3: Procedural Modeling with Sweep and Skin**
**Use When:** Creating tubes, pipes, cables, or organic shapes from curves
**Steps:**
1. **Create Spine Curve**
```
// Method 1: Draw curve manually
Curve SOP
- Draw curve in viewport
// Method 2: Procedural curve
Line SOP -> Resample SOP
- Points: 20
v
Point Wrangle
// Add noise for organic shape
@P += curlnoise(@P * 0.5 + {0, @ptnum * 0.1, 0}) * 0.5;
```
2. **Create Profile Shape**
```
Circle SOP
- Type: Polygon
- Divisions: 8 (for octagonal tube)
- Radius: 0.2
- Orient: ZX plane (perpendicular to curve)
```
3. **Sweep Profile Along Curve**
```
Sweep SOP
- Backbone (Input 1): Spine curve
- Cross Section (Input 2): Circle profile
- Rotation: 0
- Roll: 0
- Twist: 0 (or animate for twisted cables)
- Scale: 1 (or use scale attribute on spine)
```
**Why:** Creates geometry by extruding profile along curve path
4. **Add Variation Along Curve**
```vex
// Point Wrangle on spine curve (before Sweep)
// Scale profile based on position
float t = float(@ptnum) / float(@numpt - 1); // 0 to 1 along curve
// Taper (thinner at ends)
f@pscale = smooth(0.0, 0.2, t) * smooth(1.0, 0.8, t);
// Or bulge in middle
f@pscale = 1.0 + sin(t * $PI) * 0.5;
// Twist
f@twist = t * 720; // 2 full rotations
// Sweep will use pscale for profile scaling
```
5. **Alternative: Skin SOP for Multi-Curve Surfaces**
```
[Multiple parallel curves]
v
Skin SOP
- Skinning Method: Rows or Columns
- Preserve Shape: ON
```
**Why:** Connects multiple curves into surface (like ribs of a boat hull)
**Success Criteria:**
- [x] Geometry follows curve path accurately
- [x] Profile maintains orientation along curve
- [x] Scale/twist variations applied correctly
- [x] No self-intersections (unless intended)
---
## ADVANCED TECHNIQUES
### **Technique 1: For-Each Loops for Iterative Processing**
**Use Case:** Process each piece of geometry separately (e.g., each building in city)
**Implementation:**
```
[Input Geometry with connectivity/piece attribute]
v
Connectivity SOP (create i@class attribute grouping pieces)
v
For-Each Connected Piece Block Begin
v
[Operations on each piece individually]
- Transform (random position/rotation per piece)
- Scatter (different density per piece)
- Material assignment (i@shop_materialpath per piece)
v
For-Each Block End (merges all pieces back)
```
**Example: Random Building Heights**
```vex
// Inside For-Each loop (Detail Wrangle)
// Each iteration = one building footprint
// Get bounding box height
vector bbox_min, bbox_max;
getbbox(bbox_min, bbox_max);
float base_height = bbox_max.y - bbox_min.y;
// Random height multiplier
float height_mult = fit01(rand(@class), 0.5, 3.0);
// Scale building vertically
vector scale_vec = {1, height_mult, 1};
foreach (int pt; int pts[] = expandpointgroup(0, "*")) {
vector pos = point(0, "P", pt);
pos.y *= height_mult;
setpointattrib(0, "P", pt, pos);
}
```
**Output:**
Each piece processed independently with random variations, then merged into final geometry
**Interpretation:**
- Use for piece-by-piece operations
- Slower than vectorized operations but more control
- Good for architectural proceduralism (buildings, rooms, props)
---
### **Technique 2: L-Systems for Organic Branching Structures**
**Use Case:** Trees, plants, coral, lightning, river networks
**Detailed Documentation:** See [reference/lsystems_guide.md](reference/lsystems_guide.md)
**Quick Example:**
```
L-System SOP
- Premise: A (starting symbol)
- Rule 1: A=F[+A][-A]FA (branch pattern)
- F = forward (draw line)
- + = rotate positive
- - = rotate negative
- [ = push state (save position)
- ] = pop state (return to saved position)
- Generations: 4
- Step Size: 1.0
- Angle: 25 degrees
Output: Tree-like branching structure
```
**Convert to Tubes:**
```
L-System SOP -> PolyPath SOP (convert to polylines)
v
Resample SOP (add resolution)
v
Sweep SOP (add thickness with Circle profile)
v
Point Wrangle (taper branches based on hierarchy)
```
---

## TROUBLESHOOTING
### **Issue 1: "Scatter Produces No Points"**
**Symptoms:**
- Scatter SOP outputs 0 points
- Input has geometry but output empty
**Cause:**
Input geometry has no surface area (curves, points only, or zero-area primitives).
**Solution:**
```
// Check input geometry type
1. Select Scatter node
2. Press 'i' for info window
3. Check "Input 0" primitives type
// If input is curves (not surfaces):
[Curve] -> Skin SOP (create surface from curves)
-> Scatter SOP
// If input is points only:
[Points] -> Add SOP (create polygons)
-> Scatter SOP
// If surface but zero area (flattened):
[Flat Geo] -> Mountain SOP (add height variation)
-> Scatter SOP
```
**Verification:**
```vex
// Detail Wrangle before Scatter
float area = 0;
foreach (int prim; int prims[] = expandprimgroup(0, "*")) {
area += primintrinsic(0, "measuredarea", prim);
}
printf("Total surface area: %f\n", area);
// If 0, Scatter won't work
```
---
### **Issue 2: "Copy to Points Creates Overlapping Instances"**
**Symptoms:**
- Copied geometry interpenetrating/overlapping
- Instances too close together
**Cause:**
Scatter points too dense or no relaxation iterations.
**Solution:**
```
// Scatter SOP settings
Total Count: Reduce point count
Relax Iterations: Increase (10-50 for even spacing)
// Or add minimum distance constraint (Attribute Wrangle after Scatter)
float min_dist = chf("min_distance");
foreach (int pt; int pts[] = nearpoints(0, @P, min_dist)) {
if (pt != @ptnum && pt < @ptnum) {
// Remove point if too close to lower-numbered point
removepoint(0, @ptnum);
break;
}
}
```
**Alternative: Delete by Distance**
```
Scatter -> Delete SOP
- Operation: Delete Points by Expression
- Expression: `distance(vtorigin(".", 0, @ptnum), vtorigin(".", 0, (@ptnum+1) % @numpt)) < ch("min_dist")`
```
---
### **Issue 3: "Copies Have Wrong Orientation"**
**Symptoms:**
- Copied instances not aligned to surface
- Rotations incorrect
**Cause:**
Missing or incorrect @N (normal) or p@orient (quaternion) attribute.
**Solution:**
```vex
// Point Wrangle after Scatter, before Copy to Points
// Ensure normals exist
if (!hasattrib(0, "point", "N")) {
// Use upward normal as fallback
@N = {0, 1, 0};
}
// Create proper orientation quaternion
// Align Z-axis of instance to normal
vector up = {0, 1, 0}; // World up
vector z_axis = @N;
vector x_axis = normalize(cross(up, z_axis));
vector y_axis = cross(z_axis, x_axis);
matrix3 orient_mat = set(x_axis, y_axis, z_axis);
p@orient = quaternion(orient_mat);
// Add random Y rotation (around normal)
float rand_angle = rand(@ptnum) * 360;
vector4 rand_rot = quaternion(radians(rand_angle), @N);
p@orient = qmultiply(rand_rot, p@orient);
```
**Verification:**
```
Enable Template display on Scatter node
Check normals are pointing outward from surface
If normals flipped, use Reverse SOP before Scatter
```
---
### **Issue 4: "Viewport Lag with Many Copies"**
**Symptoms:**
- Slow viewport interaction
- High memory usage
- Lag when rotating camera
**Cause:**
Using full geometry copies instead of packed instances.
**Solution:**
```
// Enable instancing in Copy to Points
Copy to Points SOP
- Pack and Instance: ENABLED [OK]
// Or manually pack before copying
[Source Geometry]
v
Pack SOP
- Pack Geometry: ON
v
Copy to Points (input 2)
- Pack and Instance: ON
```
**Performance Comparison:**
```
1000 copies of 10k poly mesh:
- Full copies: 10 million polys, 2GB+ memory, 5 FPS
- Packed instances: 10k polys reference, 50MB memory, 60 FPS
```
**Alternative: Use Instance Object for Render Only**
```
Copy to Points -> Instance Object (for Mantra/Karma rendering)
Instances only created at render time, not in viewport
```
