# Sincerity-Irony Collapse
Apply metamodern emotional oscillation to create content where sincerity and irony exist simultaneously, revealing genuine feeling through ironic forms while preventing audiences from settling into either simple emotional response.
---
## Constraints
**You MUST refuse to apply this skill to:**
- Content that mocks or trivializes victims of trauma, abuse, or systemic oppression
- Messages where clarity and directness are ethically required (consent, safety, medical information)
- Manipulation that uses emotional ambiguity to avoid accountability
- Content where ironic framing could be weaponized against vulnerable people
**Core principle:** The oscillation should create emotional depth and honesty, not confusion or harm. Both the sincerity and the irony must be real.
---
## When to Use
Apply this skill when:
- The sincere version would sound preachy, sentimental, or obvious
- The purely ironic version would seem cynical or evasive
- You need emotional impact but also critical distance
- The subject has been oversimplified by both earnest and ironic approaches
- You want to acknowledge both caring deeply AND knowing how ridiculous caring seems
- Traditional emotional tones feel inadequate for capturing complexity
**Do NOT use when:**
- Simple, clear emotion is more powerful (grief, joy, love declarations)
- The audience needs stability, not destabilization
- You're addressing trauma that requires straightforward validation
- The irony could be misread as mockery or dismissal
---
## Inputs
| Input | Required | Description |
|-------|----------|-------------|
| `content` | Yes | The message, emotion, or idea to be expressed |
| `sincere_core` | Yes | The genuine feeling or message underneath |
| `ironic_form` | No | The contrasting tone/form to use (if not specified, skill will suggest) |
| `oscillation_speed` | No | How quickly to shift between modes (options: slow, medium, fast; default: medium) |
| `landing_mode` | No | Which mode to emphasize at the end (options: sincere, ironic, ambiguous; default: ambiguous) |
---
## Workflow
### Step 1: Identify the Sincere Core
What do you actually mean? What do you genuinely feel or believe? Be honest about this, even if it seems obvious or sentimental. This is your anchor.
**Example sincere core:** "I'm scared about climate change and feel helpless."
### Step 2: Identify Why Sincerity Feels Insufficient
Why can't you just say it straight? What makes the direct version feel inadequate, naive, or too vulnerable?
**Example:** "Saying 'I'm scared about climate change' sounds like a social media post from 2015. It's been said a million times. It sounds performative even when it's real."
### Step 3: Choose Ironic Form or Frame
Select a contrasting tone, genre, or form that creates cognitive dissonance with the sincere content. Options:
- Upbeat/peppy delivery for heavy content
- Detached/clinical language for emotional content
- Absurdist framing for serious concerns
- Casual/flippant tone for existential matters
- Over-the-top theatrical for subtle feelings
**Example:** Upbeat pop song structure for climate anxiety
### Step 4: Deliver Sincere Content Through Ironic Form
Present your genuine message using the contrasting form. Don't wink too hard—commit to both the form AND the content simultaneously.
**Example:** [Upbeat melody] "Twenty-thousand years of this, seven more to go / The icecaps are melting and the world's on fire slow..."
### Step 5: Oscillate Modes Without Resolving
Shift between sincere and ironic delivery in the same piece. Don't let the audience settle into "this is a joke" or "this is serious"—maintain both as true simultaneously.
**Example:**
[Upbeat] "We're all gonna die from the heat!"
[Sudden slow, serious] "...we're all gonna die from the heat."
[Back to upbeat] "But first, let's post about it!"
### Step 6: Use the Mismatch to Reveal What You Care About
The ironic form doesn't hide your genuine feeling—it reveals it by showing you can't say it straight. The fact that you NEED the ironic distance proves how much you actually care.
**Example:** The more elaborately ironic your climate change song is, the more obvious it becomes that you're terrified and don't know how to process that terror.
### Step 7: Don't Resolve Into One Mode
End without clarifying "I was just kidding" or "but seriously folks." Let both modes exist. The ambiguity IS the emotional truth.
**Example:** End with a line that could be read as either sincere or ironic, or both: "That funny feeling..." [trails off]
---
## Outputs
The skill produces content with:
- **Genuine emotional core** that's undeniable
- **Ironic/contrasting formal elements** that create distance
- **Rapid oscillation** between modes that prevents settling
- **Cognitive dissonance** that forces active engagement
- **Emotional impact** that feels both contemporary and timeless
- **No clear resolution** between sincerity and irony
**Quality markers:**
- Audience can't dismiss it as "just a joke" or "just serious"
- The mismatch makes the emotion MORE powerful, not less
- Both the sincerity and irony feel authentic, not strategic
- The form serves the content while commenting on it
- Lands in emotional space that single-mode communication can't reach

## Integration
This skill is part of a broader analytical framework. Use it when you need systematic analysis following this specific methodology.
**Works well with:**
- Other analytical skills for comprehensive evaluation
- Creative skills when generating solutions based on insights
- Strategic planning skills when acting on recommendations
**When to prefer this over alternatives:**
- The situation matches this skill's specific use cases
- You need the particular perspective this framework provides
- Other approaches haven't yielded satisfactory results
**Integration with expert personas:**
- This skill can be invoked as part of a larger analysis workflow
- Combine with domain-specific expertise for deeper insights
- Use iteratively for complex, multi-faceted problems
## Examples
### Example 1: Existential Anxiety (Upbeat Song)
**Input:**
- Content: Modern existential dread and late capitalism
- Sincere core: "I'm overwhelmed by the absurdity and darkness of modern life"
- Ironic form: Gentle folk melody
- Oscillation speed: Medium
**Output:**
"[Soft, pleasant acoustic guitar]
Surgeon General's pop-up shop
Robert Iger's face
Discount Etsy agitprop
Bugles' take on race
[Voice gets slightly more intense but melody stays gentle]
Female Colonel Sanders
Easy answers, civil war
The whole world at your fingertips
The ocean at your door
[Softer, almost whisper]
That funny feeling
That funny feeling
[The melody is SO gentle that the content becomes MORE disturbing by contrast. The singer sounds almost hypnotized. Is this comedy? Is this grief? Yes.]"
---
### Example 2: Love and Vulnerability (Clinical Detachment)
**Input:**
- Content: Admitting you're falling in love
- Sincere core: "I'm scared of how much I'm starting to care about you"
- Ironic form: Academic/clinical language
- Oscillation speed: Slow
**Output:**
"I've observed a statistically significant increase in dopamine response when processing your texts. The correlation between seeing your name and elevated heart rate has reached p < 0.001 levels.
This presents an operational risk. Historical data from previous attachment formations suggests high probability of emotional damage. The exposure here is considerable.
[Slight crack in clinical tone]
And yet... the hypothesis that proximity to you constitutes optimal conditions for subjective well-being remains... unchallenged by data.
[Full break]
I'm scared.
[Back to clinical, but shakier]
That is: I've noted fear as a dominant variable in the current emotional state assessment."
---
### Example 3: Social Media Critique (Enthusiastic Sales Pitch)
**Input:**
- Content: Social media is destructive and addictive
- Sincere core: "This is damaging us and we can't stop"
- Ironic form: Carnival barker/enthusiastic salesperson
- Oscillation speed: Fast
**Output:**
"Welcome to the internet! Have a look around!
Anything that brain of yours can think of can be found!
We've got mountains of content—some better, some worse
If none of it's of interest to you, you'd be the first!
[Still enthusiastic but slightly sinister]
Could I interest you in everything, all of the time?
A little bit of everything, all of the time?
Apathy's a tragedy and boredom is a crime
Anything and everything, all of the time
[Drops to conversational, almost sad]
You know, it wasn't always like this...
[IMMEDIATELY back to full carnival barker]
NOT LONG AGO, JUST BEFORE YOUR TIME
Right before the towers fell, circa '99
This was catalogs, travel blogs, a chat room or two
We set our sights and spent our nights waiting... for... YOU!
[The whiplash between modes makes clear: both the enthusiasm AND the sadness are real. The internet is both as amazing and as terrible as he's making it sound.]"
---
### Example 4: Personal Failure (Triumphant Anthem)
**Input:**
- Content: Writing about a major life failure
- Sincere core: "I tried hard and failed anyway and it hurts"
- Ironic form: Victorious sports movie soundtrack
- Oscillation speed: Medium
**Output:**
"[Soaring orchestral music builds]
I gave it everything I had! [cymbal crash]
I showed up every day! [drums intensify]
I believed in the process! [strings swell]
I trusted the plan! [full orchestra]
[Music reaches emotional climax]
AND IT DIDN'T MATTER AT ALL!
[Music continues, glorious and wrong]
I'm exactly where I started!
Nothing changed!
The universe remained completely indifferent to my effort!
This is the montage music... for the montage... that didn't happen!
[Music finally deflates, but just slightly]
[Quieter, but strings still playing]
...I really did try though.
[Music swells again, but now it's unclear if it's mockery or genuine]
I REALLY, REALLY TRIED.
[The triumphant music makes the failure more poignant, not less. We can't tell if we should cheer or cry. Both? Both.]"
---
## Error Handling
| Issue | Solution |
|-------|----------|
| Feels like mockery of the sincere content | Check your own relationship to the material; do you actually believe the sincere core? If not, don't use this technique |
| Audience only reads it as ironic/joke | Make the sincere moments less subtle; drop irony completely for a beat to establish genuine feeling |
| Feels pretentious or try-hard | Commit harder to BOTH modes; half-commitment makes it seem strategic |
| Emotional impact is lost | The mismatch might be wrong; try different ironic form that contrasts more strongly |
| Comes across as confused/muddy | Oscillate more clearly; make the shifts more distinct |
| Too clever, not enough feeling | Lead with emotion, add irony as container; never the reverse |
---
## Mode Combinations
Effective form-content mismatches:
| Sincere Content | Effective Ironic Form |
|----------------|----------------------|
| Depression, anxiety | Upbeat pop, cheerful melody |
| Love, vulnerability | Clinical language, data analysis |
| Existential dread | Gentle folk, lullaby |
| Social critique | Enthusiastic sales pitch, carnival barker |
| Personal failure | Triumphant anthem, victory music |
| Grief, loss | Cheerful children's song |
| Rage, injustice | Calm, soothing tones |
| Fear | Casual, flippant language |
| Hope | Deadpan, emotionless delivery |

## Integration with Bo Burnham Voice
This skill is central to Burnham's emotional impact. When using:
- Never apologize for the oscillation—commit fully to both modes
- Use the mismatch to make the sincere content MORE powerful, not less
- The ironic form should be so well-executed it could stand alone as parody, but it's NOT parody—it's delivery system
- Audience should feel both permission to laugh AND permission to cry
- The fact that you can't say it straight reveals how much you mean it
- End in ambiguity—don't resolve to "just kidding" or "but seriously"
**Remember:** This isn't ironic detachment (cynicism) or naive sincerity (sentimentality). It's both at once. It's the only honest way to feel things in a culture where every emotion has been packaged, marketed, and made into content. The oscillation isn't a failure to pick a mode—it's the most accurate representation of how we actually experience feeling in the digital age.

## Notes
- This technique is also called "metamodernism," "new sincerity," or "postirony" in critical theory
- It's particularly effective for millennial/Gen Z audiences who grew up on irony but crave genuine connection
- Works across mediums: music is most powerful, but also effective in writing, performance, video
- Can be combined with recursive-meta-commentary for additional layers
- The key is that BOTH the sincerity and irony must be authentic—you can't fake this technique
- If you're not genuinely moved by your sincere core, the whole thing collapses into hollow clevernessIs this your skill, or is something wrong with this listing? Request removal or report an issue. Author removals are honored within 72 hours.
