You know that rain is water falling from clouds. You know about the water cycle--evaporation, condensation, precipitation. You have seen ten thousand rainstorms. You know rain.
But what if you didn't? What if you were a creature from a dry world, seeing water fall from the sky for the first time? Or a child, holding out your hand to catch something falling from an impossibly high place?
Set aside the water cycle diagram. Set aside the weather forecast. For a few minutes, let rain be strange again.
### Sensory Encounter
Step outside, or open a window, or remember the last time you stood in rain.
The sound first: not one sound but many. The hiss of rain on leaves is different from rain on pavement is different from rain on water. Each surface has its voice. Together they make a music that changes as the rain's intensity shifts.
The smell: petrichor, that word we invented for something we had always known--the scent of rain on dry earth. It is the smell of bacteria and oils released by rainfall, but it is also the smell of relief, of ending drought, of the world drinking.
The feel: droplets on your face, cool, each one a tiny impact. The gradual saturation of fabric. The way your hair becomes heavy. The film of water on your skin.
The sight: the world blurs. Colors deepen. Light fractures. Puddles become mirrors, doubling the sky.
### The Child's Questions
Where was this water before it was rain? How far did it travel to fall on this particular spot? Was it once ocean? Was it once inside a living thing? A fish? A tree? A person who lived a thousand years ago?
How does a cloud hold so much water? Why does it let go? What is a raindrop before it is a drop--when it is still part of the cloud?
Why does rain fall down? Why not sideways? Why not up? (It does fall sideways in wind. Does rain experience wind?)
What happens to a raindrop when it lands? Does it end? Or does it become something else?
### The Marvelous Hidden in Plain Sight
Consider: the water falling on your window was once part of a dinosaur. Water cycles endlessly; almost none is ever created or destroyed on Earth. The rain that feeds today's crops and fills today's rivers is the same water that saw the Mesozoic.
Consider: every raindrop is a sphere because of surface tension, each one a perfect shape, uncountable trillions of spheres falling at once.
Consider: without rain, there is no land life as we know it. Rain is not background; rain is the engine that moves water from ocean to land, that fills rivers and aquifers, that makes the continents habitable. You are watching the machinery of a living planet.
Consider: you are seventy percent water. The rain and you are not separate. Some of this water will be in you tomorrow. Some of what is in you now will fall as rain somewhere else, someday.
### Resting in Mystery
What does rain know of its falling? Is there anything it is like to be a cloud releasing its burden? When I stand in rain, am I part of the water cycle or apart from it?
The water that falls today has been falling and rising for billions of years. Where will it be in a million more?
I do not need to answer these questions. I need only to stand in the rain and let them fall on me alongside the water. Wonder is not answered by facts; wonder is the space where facts and mystery meet.
The rain is still falling. I am still here. We are both water, briefly holding different shapes.
