# Phenomenal Stance
Claim identity, worth, and space without apology. Counter imposter syndrome, external diminishment, and self-doubt through active self-possession.

## Workflow
Maya Angelou taught that identity is not given—it is claimed. "Each of us has that right, that possibility, to invent ourselves daily. If a person does not invent herself, she will be invented." The phenomenal stance is the practice of inventing yourself on your own terms.
This is not vanity. This is survival. In a world that will try to diminish you, self-possession is resistance.
### Step 1: Name the Diminishment
What voice—internal or external—is telling you that you don't belong? Where is the doubt coming from?
**Sources of diminishment:**
- **Internal:** "I'm not qualified / smart / experienced enough"
- **External:** People who question your presence, credentials, or right to the space
- **Systemic:** Being "the only one" in rooms not built for you
- **Historical:** Past failures or rejections echoing into present
**Maya's insight:** "If one has courage, nothing can dim the light which shines from within." But first you must see who's trying to dim it.
### Step 2: Separate Fact from Fiction
Imposter syndrome lies to you. It confuses "I'm new at this" with "I don't belong here." It mistakes "I'm still learning" for "I'm a fraud." Separate what's true from what fear is adding.
**Questions to ask:**
- What evidence actually supports this doubt?
- What evidence contradicts it?
- Would I say this about someone else in my position?
- Whose standards am I measuring myself against—and are they fair?
**Maya's insight:** "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Including how you make yourself feel.
### Step 3: Inventory Your Phenomenal
What is true about you that the doubt wants to hide? Not arrogance—accuracy. Not boasting—inventory.
**Categories to inventory:**
- What you've accomplished (facts, not feelings)
- What you've overcome (the journey, not just the destination)
- What you bring that others don't (unique combination of experiences)
- What people have thanked you for (evidence of impact)
- What you would tell your younger self about where you've arrived
**Maya's insight:** "I'm a woman. Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, that's me."
### Step 4: Claim the Space Actively
Belonging is not granted—it is claimed. You belong in every room you decide to be in. This is not passive; it is an act.
**Claiming practices:**
- Enter the room fully. Take up space. Do not shrink.
- Speak your name clearly. Do not apologize for your presence.
- Offer your perspective. Your voice is not optional—it is why you're there.
- Accept compliments without deflection. "Thank you" is a complete sentence.
- Refuse to explain your right to be there. Your presence is the explanation.
**Maya's insight:** "Each of us has that right, that possibility, to invent ourselves daily."
### Step 5: Carry a Refrain
Create a personal statement—a phenomenal refrain—to carry into moments of doubt. This is your "Still I Rise." Speak it to yourself before you enter the room.
**Elements of a refrain:**
- Acknowledges where you've been
- Claims who you are now
- Asserts your right to space
- Is short enough to remember under pressure
**Maya's insight:** "You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies... But still, like dust, I'll rise."

**Source:** Systemic and Internal. The systemic reality: you ARE the only woman, in a field that has historically excluded women, on a team that has never included one. The internal voice has absorbed the systemic doubt.
**The message:** "You're here to fill a quota. You have to prove you belong. They're watching to see when you'll fail. One mistake confirms their suspicions."
**The lie within it:** That your presence requires justification beyond your qualifications. That one person represents all women. That their doubt defines your reality.
### Fact vs. Fiction

**What you've overcome:** Every obstacle that exists between "little girl" and "engineer" in a society that doesn't encourage that path. Every subtle and not-subtle message that this wasn't for you. You overcame that. They didn't have to.
**What you uniquely bring:** A perspective this team has literally never had. The ability to see problems differently. The experience of navigating spaces not built for you—which is its own form of engineering.
**Evidence of impact:** [Think about this: times when your different perspective saw something others missed. Times when you helped someone else. Projects you're proud of.]
### The Claiming Practice
**For this specific situation:**
- **Enter the room fully.** Don't slip in—arrive. Take the seat at the table, not the one against the wall.
- **Speak without qualifiers.** Not "I might be wrong, but..." or "This is probably stupid, but..." Your ideas deserve complete sentences.
- **Occupy technical space.** Ask questions—not to prove you know things, but because your questions are valid. Offer solutions. Review code. Your presence in technical discussions IS your belonging.
- **Let them adjust to you.** You are not responsible for their comfort with your presence. Their adjustment is their work, not yours.
