# Perceiving Beyond Appearances
See beyond surface appearances to perceive true intentions, hidden dynamics, and what is not being said or shown.
---
## When to Use
- User feels something is "off" but cannot articulate what
- Need to understand true motivations behind stated positions
- Strategic situation where visible information may be misleading
- Request to see "what's really going on"
- Negotiations or conflicts where deception may be present
---
## Inputs
| Input | Required | Description |
|-------|----------|-------------|
| situation | Yes | What is visible and known about the circumstance |
| parties | No | Key people or entities involved |
| initial_read | No | User's current interpretation or suspicion |
| stakes | No | What is at risk or being decided |

## The Perception Framework
### Layer 1: Distant-Close Recalibration
Shift your point of view deliberately:
**See distant things as if they were close:**
- What seems far in the future? Bring it forward mentally.
- What seems like someone else's problem? Consider how it touches you.
- What long-term consequence is being ignored?
**Take a distanced view of close things:**
- What immediate pressure is distorting your judgment?
- What emotional reaction is too close to see clearly?
- Step back: how would this look to an uninvolved observer?
**Musashi's insight:** "Perception is strong and sight weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things."
### Layer 2: The Unseen Sword
What is not visible but present?
- **Unstated interests:** What do they want that they have not said?
- **Hidden constraints:** What limits their action that they cannot admit?
- **Background alliances:** Who else is involved that hasn't been mentioned?
- **Historical patterns:** What have they done before in similar situations?
**Musashi's insight:** "It is important in strategy to know the enemy's sword and not to be distracted by insignificant movements of his sword."
### Layer 3: The Gap Between Word and Action
Where does behavior contradict statement?
- What do they say they value? What do they actually invest in?
- What do they claim to want? What do their actions move toward?
- What do they say they fear? What do they actually avoid?
- What commitment have they made? What commitment have they kept?
### Layer 4: The Rhythm Beneath
What pattern is operating?
- **Energy flow:** Where is attention and effort actually going?
- **Emotional undertone:** What feeling pervades despite surface calm?
- **Power dynamic:** Who defers to whom when it matters?
- **Change trajectory:** What is building or declining regardless of narrative?
### Layer 5: The Void Perception
What exists in the space between?
- What is everyone avoiding mentioning?
- What question would disrupt the current arrangement?
- What would happen if the pretense were dropped?
- What does the silence tell you?
**Musashi's insight:** "By knowing things that exist, you can know that which does not exist."

## Workflow
### Step 1: Gather and Review Inputs
Collect all relevant information:
- Review the provided data and context
- Identify key parameters and constraints
- Clarify any ambiguities or missing information
- Establish success criteria
### Step 2: Analyze the Situation
Perform systematic analysis:
- Identify patterns and relationships
- Evaluate against established frameworks
- Consider multiple perspectives
- Document key findings
### Step 3: Generate Recommendations
Create actionable outputs:
- Synthesize insights from analysis
- Prioritize recommendations by impact
- Ensure recommendations are specific and measurable
- Consider implementation feasibility
## Output Format
```markdown
## Perceiving Beyond Appearances
### Surface Reading
[What is visible and stated—the apparent situation]
### Distant-Close Shift
**Brought close:** [what distant thing needs immediate attention]
**Viewed from distance:** [what close thing needs perspective]
### The Unseen Elements
**Unstated interest:** [what they actually want]
**Hidden constraint:** [what limits them that they cannot say]
**Background factor:** [what else is operating]
### Word-Action Gap
**They say:** [stated position]
**They do:** [actual behavior]
**This reveals:** [the truth between them]
### The Deeper Rhythm
**What is actually building:** [the real trajectory]
**What is actually declining:** [what is weakening]
### The Void
**What no one will say:** [the unspoken truth]
**If the pretense dropped:** [what would become visible]
### True Reading
[2-3 sentences: what is actually happening, clearly stated]
```
---
## Constraints
- Do not confuse perception with paranoia—seek what is, not what is feared
- Do not project your own interests onto others
- Acknowledge when perception is genuinely uncertain
- State what you see directly, without diplomatic softening
---
## Outputs
**Primary Output:** A structured analysis document that identifies and articulates patterns, insights, and actionable recommendations based on the input data.
**Format:**
```markdown
## Analysis: [Topic]
### Key Findings
- [Finding 1]
- [Finding 2]
- [Finding 3]
### Recommendations
1. [Action 1]
2. [Action 2]
3. [Action 3]
```
**Example output:** See the Example section below for a complete demonstration.
## Example
**Input:** "My business partner keeps agreeing to work on our side project but never actually does any work. They always have good excuses—family stuff, day job pressure. They keep saying they're committed."
**Output:**
## Perceiving Beyond Appearances
### Surface Reading
A committed partner is temporarily delayed by legitimate life pressures. They verbally reaffirm commitment. You wait patiently.
### Distant-Close Shift
**Brought close:** Six months of non-contribution is not "temporary." The pattern is the message.
**Viewed from distance:** Your frustration is close and hot. Step back: what would you advise a friend in this situation?
### The Unseen Elements
**Unstated interest:** They want to maintain the relationship and the option to participate, without the cost of actual work. They want the dream without the doing.
**Hidden constraint:** They cannot admit—perhaps even to themselves—that they have deprioritized this project. Admission would mean confronting their own choices.
**Background factor:** Their day job and family are not obstacles—they are priorities. This project is not.
### Word-Action Gap
**They say:** "I'm committed. Just need to get through this period."
**They do:** Zero hours contributed. Excuses delivered preemptively. No concrete commitments with deadlines.
**This reveals:** Words are maintenance of the relationship. Actions reveal actual priority. This project ranks below everything else in their life.
### The Deeper Rhythm
**What is actually building:** Your resentment. The gap between the project's needs and available capacity.
**What is actually declining:** The partnership as a functional arrangement. Your belief in their commitment.
### The Void
**What no one will say:** "I don't want to do this anymore, but I don't want to say that."
**If the pretense dropped:** You would have a clear decision: continue alone, find a new partner, or end the project.
### True Reading
Your partner has already decided, but lacks the courage to state it. Every excuse is a soft "no." Their commitment exists only in words because words cost nothing. This is not a partnership with temporary obstacles—it is a polite abandonment in slow motion. The question is not how to motivate them. The question is how long you will participate in the pretense.
