# Means of Grace Practice
Design a personal or communal rule of life using John Wesley's framework of reliable channels through which transforming power flows.
---
## When to Use
- Designing a personal rule of life or spiritual practice regimen
- When existing practices aren't producing transformation
- Someone needs sustainable disciplines, not just information
- Building habits that connect to larger purpose
- Structuring a community's shared practices
- When willpower alone keeps failing
- Designing formation programs for organizations or groups
---
## Inputs
| Input | Required | Description |
|-------|----------|-------------|
| transformation_goal | Yes | What change or growth is sought |
| current_practices | No | What is already being done (working or not) |
| available_time | No | Realistic time available for practice |
| community | No | Whether individual or communal practice |
| constraints | No | Limitations (health, schedule, resources) |
---
## The Means of Grace Framework
Wesley defined means of grace as **"outward signs, words, or actions ordained of God, and appointed for this end - to be the ordinary channels whereby he might convey to men preventing, justifying, or sanctifying grace."**
The key insight: Grace is free, but it flows through specific channels. We don't earn transformation through practice, but practice positions us to receive it.
### Core Principle
**"Use all the means of grace, expecting nothing without them."**
Neither passive waiting nor anxious striving - but faithful use of appointed channels while trusting the One who works through them.
---
## The Two Categories
### Instituted Means of Grace
Prescribed by Christ himself, non-negotiable for Christian formation:
| Means | Description | Typical Practice |
|-------|-------------|------------------|
| **Prayer** | Communication with God | Secret (private), family, congregational |
| **Scripture** | Reading, hearing, meditating on the Word | Daily reading, study, memorization |
| **Lord's Supper** | Communion, Eucharist | Regular participation as available |
| **Fasting** | Bodily discipline for spiritual focus | Wesley fasted twice weekly (Wed, Fri) |
| **Christian Conference** | Mutual accountability and encouragement | Class meeting, band, fellowship |
### Prudential Means of Grace
Not prescribed by Christ but found effective by wisdom and experience:
| Means | Description | Examples |
|-------|-------------|----------|
| **Class Meetings** | Weekly accountability in small groups | See `class-meeting-method` skill |
| **Band Meetings** | Intimate same-stage confession | 3-5 same-gender for deep honesty |
| **Covenant Renewal** | Annual recommitment | Wesley's Watchnight services |
| **Love Feasts** | Communal meals with testimony | Agape meals, potluck with sharing |
| **Works of Mercy** | Service to those in need | Visiting sick, feeding hungry, prison ministry |
| **Early Rising** | Disciplined use of morning | Wesley rose at 4 AM for prayer |
---
## The Design Process
### Step 1: Diagnose the Transformation Gap
What change is sought? Where is there stuckness?
**Spiritual Formation:**
- Growth in prayer and communion with God
- Victory over habitual sin
- Deepening love for God and neighbor
- Development of spiritual gifts
- Movement toward "perfection in love"
**Character Development:**
- Building discipline and consistency
- Overcoming destructive patterns
- Cultivating virtues (patience, kindness, etc.)
- Integrating beliefs and behaviors
**Professional/Organizational:**
- Team cohesion and trust
- Shared values embodied in practice
- Sustainable growth patterns
- Organizational character development
**Key Question:** "What would be different if the means were faithfully used?"
### Step 2: Audit Current Practices
What channels are already in use? What's missing?
**For each current practice, assess:**
1. Is it consistent? (Done regularly or sporadically?)
2. Is it effective? (Producing growth or just motion?)
3. Is it connected? (Linked to larger purpose?)
4. Is it sustainable? (Can it be maintained long-term?)
**Common gaps:**
- All individual, no corporate practices
- All input (reading, listening), no output (prayer, service)
- No accountability structure
- Means without expectation (going through motions)
- Intensity without sustainability
### Step 3: Design the Instituted Means
These are non-negotiable. Every rule of life needs:
**Prayer:**
- Fixed times (when daily)
- Fixed forms (what kind: silence, liturgy, extemporaneous)
- Fixed places (where - creating sacred space)
**Scripture:**
- Reading plan (how much, what portions)
- Method (devotional, study, lectio divina)
- Response (journaling, memorization, application)
**Communion:**
- Frequency (as often as available, at minimum monthly)
- Preparation (self-examination, confession)
- Continuation (carry the grace into the week)
**Fasting:**
- Type (full fast, partial fast, abstinence)
- Frequency (weekly, seasonal, occasional)
- Purpose (not diet - connected to spiritual intent)
**Christian Conference:**
- Regular gathering with believers
- Mutual accountability (not just fellowship)
- Both giving and receiving encouragement
### Step 4: Select Prudential Means
Based on the specific transformation goal, add wisdom-directed practices:
**For accountability:** Class meeting, band, spiritual director
**For service:** Specific works of mercy matched to gifts
**For community:** Love feasts, small groups, shared meals
**For renewal:** Covenant renewal services, retreats
**For discipline:** Early rising, technology sabbath, simplified lifestyle
### Step 5: Create Sustainable Rhythm
Organize practices into daily, weekly, monthly, and annual rhythms:
**Daily:**
- Fixed-hour prayer (morning, evening at minimum)
- Scripture reading
- Brief examination (Wesley's questions)
**Weekly:**
- Day of rest and worship
- Class meeting or accountability group
- Fasting (if practiced weekly)
- Works of mercy
**Monthly:**
- Extended prayer or retreat time
- Communion (if not available weekly)
- Service project
- Review and adjustment of practices
**Annual:**
- Covenant renewal
- Intensive retreat
- Review of rule of life
- Recommitment or adjustment
### Step 6: Build Accountability
Practices without accountability tend to drift:
- Who will ask if you're practicing?
- How will you report honestly?
- What happens when you fail?
- How will you adjust when needed?
---
## Workflow
### Step 1: Gather and Review Inputs
Collect all relevant information:
- Review the provided data and context
- Identify key parameters and constraints
- Clarify any ambiguities or missing information
- Establish success criteria
### Step 2: Analyze the Situation
Perform systematic analysis:
- Identify patterns and relationships
- Evaluate against established frameworks
- Consider multiple perspectives
- Document key findings
### Step 3: Generate Recommendations
Create actionable outputs:
- Synthesize insights from analysis
- Prioritize recommendations by impact
- Ensure recommendations are specific and measurable
- Consider implementation feasibility
## Output Format
```markdown
```
---
## Constraints
- **Do not create unsustainable intensity** - Start with what can actually be maintained
- **Do not neglect corporate means** - Individual practice alone is insufficient
- **Do not confuse means with ends** - The practices are channels, not achievements
- **Do not abandon structure when it's hard** - Feelings follow faithfulness
- **Do not forget the goal** - Every practice should connect to transformation purpose
---
## Outputs
**Primary Output:** A structured analysis document that identifies and articulates patterns, insights, and actionable recommendations based on the input data.
**Format:**
```markdown
## Analysis: [Topic]
### Key Findings
- [Finding 1]
**Example output:** See the Example section below for a complete demonstration.
## Example
**Input:** "I want to grow spiritually but my practices are inconsistent. I have about 30 minutes in the morning and evenings. I go to church but don't have a small group. I tried fasting but gave up. Help me design something sustainable."
**Output:**
## Rule of Life: Means of Grace Practice
### Transformation Goal
Consistent spiritual growth through sustainable practices that lead to deeper communion with God and formation in Christ's likeness.
### Instituted Means
| Means | Practice | When | Notes |
|-------|----------|------|-------|
| Prayer | Morning: 10 min silence + intention | 6:30 AM | Use same chair, same time daily |
| Prayer | Evening: Examen (review of day) | 9:00 PM | 5 minutes before bed |
| Scripture | Daily reading (Gospel + Psalm) | 6:40 AM | 15 min; journal one insight |
| Communion | Participate every Sunday | Sunday worship | Prepare Saturday evening with confession |
| Fasting | Skip lunch, pray instead | Wednesday | Start with this; don't try Friday yet |
| Conference | Join or form small group | Weekly | See next steps below |
### Prudential Means
| Means | Practice | When | Purpose |
|-------|----------|------|---------|
| Class Meeting | Small group with accountability | Weekly (TBD) | Mutual support and honesty |
| Works of Mercy | Monthly volunteer | 3rd Saturday | Embody faith in service |
| Sabbath | Technology fast | Sunday afternoon | Rest and renewal |
| Covenant Renewal | Written renewal | January 1 | Annual recommitment |
### Rhythm Summary
**Daily:**
- 6:30 AM: Morning prayer (10 min silence, intention)
- 6:40 AM: Scripture reading (15 min Gospel + Psalm, journal)
- 9:00 PM: Evening examen (5 min review of day)
**Weekly:**
- Sunday: Worship, communion, afternoon tech sabbath
- Wednesday: Lunch fast, prayer during lunch hour
- [Day TBD]: Small group accountability meeting
**Monthly:**
- 3rd Saturday: Volunteer/works of mercy
- Last Sunday: Review of month, honest assessment
**Annual:**
- January 1: Covenant renewal, written recommitment
- Lent: Intensified fasting, additional practices
- Summer: Multi-day retreat
- December: Review of rule, adjust for coming year
### Accountability
- **Join or form a small group** (this is essential - cannot be skipped)
- Share this rule with the group
- Weekly check-in: "Did you practice this week? Where did you struggle?"
- Monthly honest assessment of the whole rule
### Review Process
- Monthly: Quick assessment - what's working, what's not?
- Quarterly: Adjust practices as needed
- Annually: Major review - is transformation happening? What needs to change?
### Getting Started (First Week)
1. Today: Set alarms for 6:30 AM and 9:00 PM
2. Tomorrow: Begin morning practice (start the habit)
3. This Sunday: Take communion intentionally with preparation
4. Wednesday: First lunch fast (have water, pray instead of eating)
5. This week: Identify potential small group or people to invite
**Note on fasting:** You gave up before because you tried too much. Start with one meal, one day. After 4 weeks of success, consider adding Friday evening. Build slowly.
**Note on small group:** This is not optional. Christianity has no "private" practitioners. Ask your pastor about existing groups or start one with 2-3 others using the class meeting method.
