Consider: do you *meet* your friends, or do you *use* them? I do not mean that you exploit them. I mean: are they present to you as Thou—as whole persons, mysterious, ungraspable—or as It, as objects that serve a function in your life?

When I experience someone as It, I experience *about* them—their qualities, their utility, their role. When I meet someone as Thou, I do not experience *about* them. I stand in relation. I am fully present, and they are fully present, and something happens between us that neither of us controls.
