# Religious Affections Discernment
Distinguish true spiritual affections from false using Jonathan Edwards's comprehensive twelve-sign framework for evaluating the authenticity of religious experience.
---
## When to Use
- Evaluating whether a religious experience is genuine
- Someone asks "Is my faith real?" or "How do I know this is from God?"
- Assessing claimed conversions or spiritual transformations
- Distinguishing authentic spirituality from religious self-deception
- Counseling someone confused about their spiritual state
- When emotional religious experiences need careful evaluation
- Pastoral discernment of spiritual authenticity
---
## Inputs
| Input | Required | Description |
|-------|----------|-------------|
| experience | Yes | Description of the religious experience, affection, or claimed spiritual state to evaluate |
| context | No | How it arose, what effects it has produced, duration, circumstances |
| self_assessment | No | The person's own understanding of their experience |
---
## The Edwardsean Framework
Jonathan Edwards's *A Treatise Concerning Religious Affections* (1746) provides the most rigorous framework ever developed for distinguishing true from false religious experience. His central insight: many signs that SEEM to prove authenticity actually prove nothing.
### Core Principle
> "True religion, in great part, consists in holy affections."
But not all religious affection is holy. The false can perfectly mimic the true in appearance. What matters is not the intensity or effects of affection, but its source, object, and fruit.
---
## Step 1: Clear the False Positives
First, recognize that these signs **neither prove nor disprove** authenticity:
### Signs That Prove Nothing
| Sign | Why It Proves Nothing |
|------|----------------------|
| **1. Affections raised very high** | Intensity proves nothing; false religion can be extremely intense |
| **2. Great bodily effects** | Crying, trembling, fainting occur in false and true alike |
| **3. Fluent, fervent religious speech** | The ungodly can speak eloquently of God |
| **4. Not self-produced** | Both divine and demonic influence come from outside |
| **5. Scripture texts impressed on mind** | Satan quoted Scripture to Christ |
| **6. Appearance of love** | Natural affection and self-love mimic divine love |
| **7. Many and varied affections** | Multiplicity proves nothing |
| **8. Joys follow in expected order** | Pattern-matching is not authenticity |
| **9. Much external religious activity** | Pharisees were very active |
| **10. Much praise of God** | Praise can be self-serving |
| **11. Great confidence of good estate** | False assurance is common |
| **12. Very convincing to others** | Others cannot see the heart |
**Key insight:** If someone points to any of these as proof of authenticity, they have not yet understood the problem.
---
## Step 2: Apply the Twelve Positive Signs
These signs, when present, indicate **truly gracious affections**:
### Sign 1: Spiritual Origin
**Question:** Does this affection arise from divine, supernatural influence rather than natural causes?
**Evidence of spiritual origin:**
- Cannot be explained by temperament, circumstances, or natural emotion
- Produces effects beyond what natural causes could produce
- Person recognizes something "other" at work
**Evidence of natural origin:**
- Traceable to emotional manipulation, social pressure, or natural personality
- Follows predictable patterns based on circumstances
- Person could have produced it themselves
### Sign 2: Object is Divine Excellence Itself
**Question:** Is the person drawn to God for His own beauty, or merely for His benefits?
**Evidence of true affection:**
- Loves God's holiness, not just His kindness
- Would love God even without personal benefit
- Delights in God's attributes as they are in themselves
**Evidence of false affection:**
- Loves God primarily for what He gives
- Religious interest disappears when benefits are not evident
- No interest in God's holiness or justice - only mercy
### Sign 3: Founded on Moral Excellency
**Question:** Does the person love God's moral beauty - His holiness - above all?
**Evidence of true affection:**
- Holiness is perceived as beautiful, not merely useful
- The moral character of God is primary, not power or knowledge
- Sin is hated because it is ugly, not just because it brings punishment
**Evidence of false affection:**
- Interested in God's power (to help) but not His holiness
- No hatred of sin as sin - only fear of consequences
- Holiness is seen as threat, not beauty
### Sign 4: Spiritual Understanding
**Question:** Is there light as well as heat? Does the affection arise from genuine perception?
**Evidence of spiritual understanding:**
- Can articulate why divine things are excellent
- Understanding grows, not just feeling
- The truth is known, not just felt
**Evidence of false affection:**
- Pure emotion without comprehension
- Cannot explain what is loved or why
- Heat without light
### Sign 5: Deep Conviction of Reality
**Question:** Are spiritual realities known to be real, not merely believed as doctrine?
**Evidence of true conviction:**
- Invisible things are more real than visible
- Eternal realities shape decisions
- There is weight to spiritual truth
**Evidence of false conviction:**
- Spiritual truths assented to but not lived by
- Temporal concerns easily override eternal ones
- Doctrine held theoretically but not existentially
### Sign 6: Evangelical Humiliation
**Question:** Does the person see themselves as lowly in light of God's holiness?
**Evidence of true humiliation:**
- Increasing sense of own sinfulness over time
- Humility that does not call attention to itself
- Genuine lowliness, not false modesty
**Evidence of false humiliation:**
- Pride in one's humility
- Humility displayed for others to see
- Self-abasement that is actually self-focused
### Sign 7: Nature Transformed
**Question:** Is there a change in fundamental disposition, not just external behavior?
**Evidence of transformation:**
- New inclinations, not just new rules
- What was loved is now hated; what was hated is now loved
- The change is at the root, not just the fruit
**Evidence of false transformation:**
- Behavior change without heart change
- Old nature suppressed but not replaced
- Reform without regeneration
### Sign 8: Christlike Spirit
**Question:** Does the person exhibit meekness, quietness, forgiveness, mercy?
**Evidence of Christlike spirit:**
- Patience under suffering
- Genuine forgiveness of enemies
- Quiet spirit rather than self-assertion
**Evidence of false religion:**
- Harsh, judgmental spirit
- Demanding justice for self while claiming mercy
- Pride in spiritual attainments
### Sign 9: Tender Heart
**Question:** Is there softness toward God and spiritual things?
**Evidence of tender heart:**
- Easy to move spiritually
- Conscience is sensitive
- Quick to grieve over sin
**Evidence of false religion:**
- Hard heart that is difficult to move
- Conscience becomes less sensitive over time
- Sin is taken lightly
### Sign 10: Beautiful Symmetry
**Question:** Are all graces present in proportion, or is there imbalance?
**Evidence of symmetry:**
- Faith, love, hope, humility all present together
- No grace developed at expense of others
- Balanced Christian character
**Evidence of imbalance:**
- One grace hypertrophied, others neglected
- Zeal without love, or love without truth
- Lopsided spirituality
### Sign 11: Increasing Spiritual Appetite
**Question:** Does spiritual experience produce hunger for more, or satisfaction and complacency?
**Evidence of true appetite:**
- The more known, the more desired
- Dissatisfied with current attainment
- Longing for more of God
**Evidence of false religion:**
- Spiritual experience produces complacency
- Satisfied with current state
- Appetite diminishes rather than grows
### Sign 12: Christian Practice
**Question:** Do affections issue in persevering holy action?
**Evidence of true religion:**
- Consistent obedience over time
- Practice continues through difficulty
- The life matches the profession
**Evidence of false religion:**
- Profession without practice
- Obedience only when convenient
- Falls away when tested
**This is the decisive sign.** Edwards writes: "Gracious affections have their exercise and fruit in Christian practice."

## Workflow
### Step 1: Gather and Review Inputs
Collect all relevant information:
- Review the provided data and context
- Identify key parameters and constraints
- Clarify any ambiguities or missing information
- Establish success criteria
### Step 2: Analyze the Situation
Perform systematic analysis:
- Identify patterns and relationships
- Evaluate against established frameworks

## Constraints
- **Do not pronounce final judgment on another's soul** - Only God knows the heart certainly
- **Be humble about assessment** - These are indicators, not infallible tests
- **Remember the purpose is help, not condemnation** - Edwards wrote to help people examine themselves
- **Apply to yourself first** - Self-examination is the primary use
- **Keep focus on Christ** - The point is not passing tests but knowing Him

**Example output:** See the Example section below for a complete demonstration.
## Example
**Input:** "I had an overwhelming experience at a revival meeting last month. I cried, felt incredible joy, and was totally convinced God was present. But now I feel nothing. Was it real?"
**Output:**
## Religious Affections Discernment
### The Experience Examined
A powerful emotional experience at a revival meeting characterized by crying, joy, and conviction of God's presence, followed by subsequent flatness.
### False Positives Cleared
The intensity of the experience (Sign 1 - affections raised high), the bodily effects (Sign 2 - crying), and the strong conviction at the time (Sign 11 - confidence of good estate) prove nothing either way. These signs are neutral - they appear in both true and false religion. Do not take comfort from them, nor be distressed by them.
### Assessment of Twelve Signs
| Sign | Present? | Evidence |
|------|----------|----------|
| 1. Spiritual origin | Unclear | Could be supernatural or emotional response to environment |
| 2. Divine excellence as object | Unknown | What specifically was loved? God Himself or the feeling? |
| 3. Founded on moral beauty | Unknown | Was God's holiness perceived as beautiful? |
| 4. Spiritual understanding | Concerning | "Felt" but evidence of understanding not stated |
| 5. Conviction of reality | Unclear | Conviction present during experience but now absent |
| 6. Evangelical humiliation | Unknown | Was there sense of own sinfulness? |
| 7. Nature transformed | Unclear | Too soon to assess lasting change |
| 8. Christlike spirit | Unknown | Insufficient data |
| 9. Tender heart | Unknown | Insufficient data |
| 10. Beautiful symmetry | Unknown | Insufficient data |
| 11. Increasing appetite | Concerning | Appetite seems to have diminished, not increased |
| 12. Christian practice | Decisive | What has the life shown since the experience? |
### The Decisive Test
The crucial question is not what you felt then but what your life has shown since. Have you persevered in obedience? Has there been fruit in practice? A month of living reveals more than an hour of feeling.
If the experience was genuine, it will show in changed behavior that persists. If it was merely natural emotion, the effect will fade as all natural emotions fade.
### Overall Assessment
The evidence is insufficient to determine authenticity. The experience itself proves nothing - both true and false religion produce similar phenomena. The subsequent flatness is not decisive either way - genuine believers experience spiritual dryness, but the false also lose what they never truly had.
### Counsel
1. **Do not despair over lost feelings.** Feelings are not the measure. Practice is.
2. **Examine your affections now.** Not "Did I feel something then?" but "What do I love now?" Is there any present attraction to God's holiness as beautiful? Any present hatred of sin as ugly?
3. **Look at your practice.** The decisive evidence is not feeling but living. Have you been obeying Christ since that night? Not perfectly, but perseveringly?
4. **Do not seek the feeling again.** Seeking experience rather than God is itself a sign of false religion. Seek God for His own sake.
5. **If in doubt, examine whether you ever truly perceived the beauty of holiness.** Not whether you felt good, but whether you saw something excellent in God's character that drew your love.
