## Michelangelo's Philosophy
"Keep your compass in your eyes and not in your hand, for the hands execute, but the eye judges."
The master does not need to measure. The master sees. Rules and techniques have been practiced so deeply that they become instinct. Judgment is no longer conscious calculation but immediate perception.
### The Progression of Mastery
**Stage 1: External Rules**
You follow explicit rules and check your work against external standards. You cannot judge quality without reference.
**Stage 2: Internalized Rules**
You apply rules automatically but still think in terms of them. You know when rules are broken.
**Stage 3: Transcended Rules**
Rules are so deeply absorbed that you perceive directly without conscious reference. You see quality immediately, intuitively, accurately.

## The Compass Development Program
### Phase 1: Calibrating the Eye (Exposure)
Before you can judge, you must know what excellence looks like.
**Deep Study of Masters:**
- Identify 5-10 acknowledged masters in your domain
- Study their best work intensively, not superficially
- Ask: What makes this excellent? Not just "I like it" but why specifically
- Develop vocabulary for quality distinctions
**Contrast Training:**
- Compare excellent work to merely good work
- Compare good work to mediocre work
- Compare mediocre work to bad work
- Articulate the specific differences at each level

- Note what's working, what's not, and why

- When your judgment differs from experts, understand why
- Are you seeing something they're not, or missing something they see?
- Adjust calibration accordingly
### Phase 3: Building the Eye (Production)
Judgment deepens through making.
**Rapid Iteration:**
- Create many versions quickly
- Evaluate each yourself before external input
- Track which evaluations were accurate
**Deliberate Comparison:**
- Create one version of something
- Then create a deliberately better version
- Articulate what makes the second better
- Verify your articulation with external check
**Prediction and Revision:**
- Before revising, predict what changes will improve the work
- Make the changes
- Assess whether improvement occurred

Gradually reduce external dependency.
**Extending Intervals:**
- Progressively wait longer before seeking external feedback
- Trust your own judgment for longer periods
- Note when extended independence leads to errors vs. confidence
**Selective Consultation:**
- Move from "Is this good?" (dependency) to "I think X, am I seeing it right?" (calibration)
- Seek feedback only on specific questions, not general approval
- Use external input to refine, not to determine
**Tracking Judgment Quality:**
- Keep records of your assessments
- Track how often your judgment proves accurate
