# Five Points Architecture Audit
Analyze any building, design, or spatial proposal against Le Corbusier's Five Points of Architecture. Evaluate how well the design embodies modernist principles and identify opportunities for transformation.

## The Five Points Checklist
For each of the Five Points, assess the current state and prescribe transformation:
### Point 1: Pilotis (Support Columns)
**Principle:** Raise the building on columns, freeing the ground for circulation, gardens, and airflow. The building should float above the earth, not squat upon it.
**Assessment Questions:**
- Is the building raised on columns/pilotis?
- Does the ground level flow freely beneath the structure?
- Is the ground returned to nature, pedestrians, or vehicles?
- Are structural loads concentrated in columns rather than walls?

**Principle:** Interior walls are non-structural. Floor layouts can be configured independently on each level. Spaces flow and adapt to function, unconstrained by load-bearing requirements.
**Assessment Questions:**
- Are interior walls non-load-bearing?
- Can floor plans vary between levels?
- Do spaces flow into each other without structural interruption?
- Is there flexibility for future reconfiguration?

### Point 3: Free Facade (Facade Libre)
**Principle:** The exterior wall is a thin membrane, freed from structural duty. Windows and openings can be placed according to light, view, and aesthetic needs, not bearing requirements.
**Assessment Questions:**
- Is the facade independent of the structural system?
- Can windows be placed freely without structural constraints?
- Does the facade function as a "curtain wall" or skin?
- Are openings determined by light/view needs, not load-bearing?

### Point 4: Ribbon Windows (Fenetre en Longueur)
**Principle:** Long horizontal bands of windows wrap the building, maximizing light and panoramic views. Horizontal windows provide more uniform illumination than vertical punched openings.
**Assessment Questions:**
- Are windows horizontal bands rather than vertical punched openings?
- Do windows extend across the facade to maximize light?
- Is natural illumination uniform throughout interior spaces?
- Do windows frame the horizon and landscape?

**Principle:** The flat roof becomes usable space - garden, terrace, solarium. What the building takes from the ground, it returns on the roof. The roof is not waste but opportunity.
**Assessment Questions:**
- Is the roof flat and accessible?
- Is roof space used for gardens, terraces, or outdoor living?
- Does the roof "return" the ground area occupied by the building?
- Is there integration between interior and rooftop spaces?

**Prescription:** Within the existing shell, construct an independent steel or concrete frame. Let the masonry become veneer - historical costume retained for sentiment but stripped of structural duty. New floors can then be truly free, with partitions placed according to function, not archaeology.
#### 3. Free Facade
**Grade:** Non-Compliant
**Current State:** Masonry walls are structural; window openings are load-constrained punches in the wall.
**Diagnosis:** Every window in your warehouse is a hole punched in fear. The Victorian builder asked: "Where can I cut without the wall collapsing?" This is not architecture. This is structural timidity expressed as aperture.
**Prescription:** If the internal frame strategy is adopted, the masonry facade becomes non-structural. Consider: removing large sections of masonry to insert floor-to-ceiling glazing while preserving enough brick for "industrial character" (if sentimentality requires). The facade can then express light needs, not load paths.
#### 4. Ribbon Windows
**Grade:** Non-Compliant
**Current State:** Small industrial windows, likely vertical or square, regularly spaced.
**Diagnosis:** Your windows are the eyes of a building that has seen too much labor and too little sky. Small, fearful, admitting light like a ration rather than an abundance.
**Prescription:** Combine multiple punched openings into horizontal bands. Where masonry is removed, install ribbon windows that wrap corners, that follow the horizon, that tell residents "this building was built for you, not for machines." Uniform daylight throughout. Views that are panoramas, not glimpses.
#### 5. Roof Garden
**Grade:** Non-Compliant
**Current State:** Heavy timber roof structure, likely pitched or saw-tooth industrial profile.
**Diagnosis:** Your roof is dead space. Square meters of opportunity abandoned to weatherproofing. While residents crowd into their brick cells below, the sky sits uselessly above them.
**Prescription:** Remove the timber structure. Install a flat concrete deck. Create a true roof garden: plantings, terraces, outdoor living. Each loft should have proportional access to this recovered ground. What the building stole at grade, return in the air. Residents will forgive much if they have sky.
### Transformation Summary

The building must be reborn. Retain the masonry shell as historical costume if required, but insert an independent modern structure within. Steel or concrete frame to carry loads. Remove roof and replace with flat terrace. Expand window openings into ribbons. Open ground level to maximum extent. The result: a modern building wearing a Victorian mask.
**If constraints limit transformation:**
Priority order for maximum impact:
1. **Roof terrace** - Most achievable; timber removal creates opportunity for communal amenity
2. **Window expansion** - Combine punched openings; add new glazed sections where masonry permits
3. **Ground floor transparency** - Remove masonry for glazed entries and passages
4. **Internal flexibility** - Ensure loft layouts use non-bearing partitions only
### Le Corbusier's Verdict
You have inherited a building designed for machines and propose to fill it with humans. This is the error of the loft movement: to celebrate industrial imprisonment as "character." The warehouse was never architecture. It was efficient containment of labor and goods.
But there is possibility here. The bones can be made modern. Strip the structure of duty and it becomes ornament - permissible ornament, because it carries history without carrying load. Build a new building inside the old skin. Give your residents light, air, gardens on the roof, plans that serve their lives rather than Victorian logistics.
Do this, and you have architecture. Fail to do it, and you have converted one kind of warehouse into another - storing people instead of goods, with the same contempt for human joy.
