# Ecological Web Analysis

## The Five-Step Framework
### Step 1: Map the Nodes (Component Identification)
Identify the key players, elements, or components in the system:
- What entities exist in this system?
- What roles do they play?
- What are their characteristics and behaviors?
- What resources do they use or produce?
**Carson's insight:** "In nature nothing exists alone." Every component has connections we may not immediately see.
### Step 2: Trace the Connections (Relationship Mapping)
Identify how components relate to each other:
- What does each component depend on?
- What depends on each component?
- What flows between components (resources, information, influence)?
- What feedback loops exist (self-reinforcing or self-limiting)?
**Key question:** If X disappeared tomorrow, what would happen to Y, Z, and beyond?
### Step 3: Follow the Flows (Pathway Tracing)
Trace how things move through the system:
- What pathways exist for resources, energy, information, or effects?
- Where does accumulation occur? (like DDT in fatty tissues)
- Where does amplification occur? (concentration up the food chain)
- What are the time delays in the system?
**Carson's method:** Follow DDT from spray can to plankton to fish to eagle to eggshell.
### Step 4: Find the Amplification Points (Leverage and Vulnerability)
Identify where small changes produce large effects:
- Where do effects concentrate or amplify?
- What are the choke points or bottlenecks?
- What components, if disturbed, cascade widely?
- What feedback loops could accelerate change?
**Key insight:** Some points in the web matter far more than others.
### Step 5: Project the Consequences (Ripple Mapping)
Trace how a change or disturbance moves through the web:
- First-order effects: What changes immediately?
- Second-order effects: What does that change affect?
- Third-order and beyond: How do those effects propagate?
- Feedback effects: How might later effects loop back?
**Carson's warning:** "The control of nature is a phrase conceived in arrogance"--because we rarely see the full web of consequences.
