## Smith's Division of Labor Principles
Adam Smith identified the division of labor as "the greatest improvement in the productive powers of labour." His pin factory example showed how 10 workers specializing in 18 distinct operations could produce 48,000 pins per day, versus perhaps 20 pins if each worked alone.
### Three Sources of Productivity Gain
**1. Increased Dexterity**
"The division of labour, by reducing every man's business to some one simple operation, and by making this operation the sole employment of his life, necessarily increases very much the dexterity of the workman."
Repetition builds skill. A worker who performs one task thousands of times develops expertise impossible for a generalist.
**2. Time Saved**
"The advantage which is gained by saving the time commonly lost in passing from one sort of work to another is much greater than we should at first view be apt to imagine."
Task-switching has costs: changing tools, changing mental context, relocating. Specialization eliminates these transitions.
**3. Innovation Through Focus**
"Men are much more likely to discover easier and readier methods of attaining any object when the whole attention of their minds is directed towards that single object than when it is dissipated among a great variety of things."
Specialists see improvements generalists miss. Many labor-saving inventions came from workers focused on single tasks.

## Common Specialization Traps
### Over-Specialization
"The man whose whole life is spent in performing a few simple operations... has no occasion to exert his understanding... He naturally loses, therefore, the habit of such exertion."
Smith himself warned that extreme specialization dulls the worker. Balance efficiency with human development.
### Coordination Collapse
Specialists need coordination. As specialization increases, so does the overhead of managing handoffs, quality control, and communication. At some point, coordination costs exceed specialization gains.
