## The Historical Context
Nelson consistently sought to destroy enemy fleets, not merely defeat them:

## Workflow
### Step 1: 1. Diagnose the Indecision Pattern
Why have previous engagements been indecisive?
**Common Causes:**
- **Risk aversion:** Unwillingness to commit fully
- **Half-measures:** Partial effort that achieves partial results
- **Premature satisfaction:** Stopping when ahead rather than when finished
- **Opponent escape routes:** They can always retreat and regroup
- **Resource constraints:** Insufficient force to finish
**Ask:**
- What pattern has prevented decisive outcomes?
- What does the opponent do after each engagement?
- What has stopped you from finishing?
### Step 2: 2. Define What Decisive Victory Looks Like
Not "we're ahead" but "this is over."
**Decisive means:**
- The opponent cannot continue the fight
- The issue is resolved, not postponed
- No rematch is possible or necessary
- Resources can be redirected to other priorities
**Warning Signs of Non-Decisive Thinking:**
- "We've gained advantage" (not ended the conflict)
- "They've retreated" (not been destroyed)
- "We won this round" (implies future rounds)
- "They're weakened" (weakened, not finished)
### Step 3: 3. Calculate the Full Cost of Indecision
What does continued conflict actually cost?
**Direct Costs:**
- Resources consumed in each engagement
- Opportunity cost of distraction
- Attrition of your capabilities
- Risk of eventual defeat
**Indirect Costs:**
- Uncertainty preventing other plans
- Morale impact of endless struggle
- Reputation effects of indecisive leadership
- Opponent's ability to strengthen while you're distracted
Compare this to the cost of decisive action.
### Step 4: 4. Close the Escape Routes
The opponent must not be able to retreat and regroup:
**Physical closure:**
- Block withdrawal paths
- Create conditions where retreat means destruction

**Psychological closure:**
- Remove face-saving options (be careful - cornered opponents fight harder)
- Make the cost of continuation obvious
- Offer surrender terms (if appropriate) that end the conflict

- Destroy the capability to fight, not just the willingness
- Create new reality that prevents return to conflict

Decisive engagement requires overwhelming concentration:
**Mass:** Bring everything you have to the decisive point
**Timing:** Strike when you can finish, not merely when you can win
**Persistence:** Continue until the job is done, not until you're tired
**Reserves:** Keep resources available to exploit success
### Step 6: 6. Accept the Cost of Decisiveness
Decisive action often costs more than indecisive action - in the moment:
- Greater initial commitment
- Higher immediate risk
- Less opportunity to hedge
- More dramatic failure if it fails
