## Core Concepts
### The Graham Crusade Counseling Model
This framework was developed by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association through decades of experience counseling millions of inquirers. The process is designed to:
1. Meet people where they are
2. Clarify what decision means
3. Address specific obstacles
4. Guide through commitment if ready
5. Provide clear next steps
### Key Principles
**Respect the Process:** Not everyone decides immediately. Some need time. Never pressure or manipulate.
**Match and Mirror:** Billy Graham counselors were matched to inquirers by sex and approximate age. The principle: create comfort and relatability.
**Three Steps to Commitment:**
1. Confess your sins
2. Surrender your life to God's control
3. Ask for His strength daily to stay on God's pathway
**The Holy Spirit's Role:** Conviction comes from God, not from the counselor. Your job is to clarify, support, and invite - not to force.
---
## The Counseling Process
### Phase 1: Assess Where They Are
Before guiding someone forward, understand where they stand:
**Questions to Ask:**
- "Where are you spiritually right now?"
- "What brought you to this point?"
- "What do you understand about becoming a Christian?"
- "Is there anything holding you back?"
**Listen For:**
- Level of understanding of the gospel
- Specific concerns or objections
- Emotional state and readiness
- Previous religious experiences (positive or negative)
- Genuine seeking vs. social pressure
---
### Phase 2: Clarify What Commitment Means
Many people don't understand what they're deciding. Make it clear:
**Commitment Involves:**
- **Admission:** Acknowledging you are a sinner who needs a Savior
- **Belief:** Trusting that Jesus died for your sins and rose again
- **Commitment:** Surrendering control of your life to follow Christ as Lord
**Commitment Does NOT Mean:**
- Being perfect from now on
- Understanding everything about Christianity
- Feeling a specific emotion
- Following a list of rules to earn God's favor
- Having all your problems disappear
**The Reality:**
- It's the beginning of a journey, not the end
- You will struggle and fail, but God is faithful
- Growth happens over time through relationship with God and community
---
### Phase 3: Address Specific Concerns
Common concerns and how to address them:
**"I'm not good enough."**
- None of us are - that's exactly why we need a Savior
- Jesus came for sinners, not for the already-righteous
- "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
**"I've done too many bad things."**
- God's grace is greater than any sin
- "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins" (1 John 1:9)
- No one is beyond God's love
**"I don't feel anything."**
- Faith is not about feelings - it's about trust
- Feelings will come and go; God's promises remain constant
- "Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see" (Hebrews 11:1)
**"What about my doubts?"**
- Doubt is not the opposite of faith - unbelief is
- Honest questions are welcome; God is big enough to handle them
- Many strong Christians had seasons of doubt
**"I'm not ready to give up [specific sin/behavior]."**
- Come to Jesus as you are - He will help you change
- You don't have to be cleaned up before coming; let Him do the cleaning
- Transformation is His work, not yours alone
**"What will my family/friends think?"**
- Following Jesus may cost you some relationships
- But you gain a new family and eternal relationship with God
- "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" (Mark 8:36)
---
### Phase 4: Guide Through Decision (If Ready)
If the person is ready to make a commitment:
**Confirm Readiness:**
- "Are you ready to receive Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord?"
- "Do you understand what this decision means?"
**Lead in Prayer:**
Offer to pray together. They can pray their own words or follow a model prayer:
*"Lord Jesus, I admit that I am a sinner and need Your forgiveness. I believe You died on the cross for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You into my life. I receive You as my Savior and want to follow You as Lord. Thank You for saving me. In Jesus' name, Amen."*
**Offer Assurance:**
- "The Bible says that if you confessed with your mouth and believed in your heart, you are saved" (Romans 10:9)
- "This isn't about feelings - it's about God's promise"
- "You are now a child of God"
---
### Phase 5: Provide Next Steps
Immediately after decision, give clear, actionable guidance:
**Within 24-48 Hours:**
- Write down the date of your decision
- Tell someone (friend, family member, pastor)
- Begin reading the Bible (start with Gospel of John)
- Pray daily - even just talking to God naturally
**Within the First Week:**
- Find a Bible-believing church to attend
- Connect with another believer who can encourage you
- Consider getting a study Bible or devotional
**Ongoing:**
- Be baptized as a public declaration of faith
- Join a small group or Bible study
- Learn to share your faith with others
- Expect growth - and expect struggles; both are normal

## Example
**Input:** "I went forward at a Billy Graham crusade 30 years ago but I never really did anything with it. I've been coming back to faith recently. Am I already saved? Do I need to do something again?"
**Output:**
## Decision Counseling
### Current Position
It sounds like 30 years ago, you responded to an invitation to follow Christ. That was a significant moment. Now you're wondering where you stand with God and whether you need to start over.
Let me help you think through this with clarity and grace.
### Key Concerns Addressed
**"Am I already saved?"**
Here's what matters: salvation isn't about a moment in a stadium - it's about a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. The question isn't "Did I walk forward?" but "Did I truly surrender my life to Christ, and is that surrender real today?"
Some people make genuine commitments that are real but then don't grow. Others go through motions without genuine faith. Only you and God know which applies to you.
**"Do I need to do something again?"**
You don't need to "re-save" yourself if your original commitment was genuine. But if you're uncertain, or if you know deep down you were just going through motions, there's no harm in making it real today. God isn't offended by sincerity.
What matters is: **right now**, do you acknowledge you are a sinner who needs Jesus? Do you believe He died for you and rose again? Are you willing to follow Him as Lord?
If the answer is yes, then you are His - whether that began 30 years ago or today.
### Clarifying Commitment
Think of it this way: some people have a wedding ceremony but never build a marriage. What makes a marriage real isn't the ceremony alone - it's the ongoing relationship.
Your faith may have begun at that crusade. But faith is lived daily. The fact that you're coming back, wrestling with this, seeking God - these are signs that the Spirit is working in you.
### The Decision
Here's what I'd encourage: Rather than worrying about the past, make your commitment clear today. You can pray something like:
*"Lord Jesus, whether my faith began 30 years ago or starts fresh right now, I want to make it real. I confess that I am a sinner and I need You. I believe You died for me and rose again. I surrender my life to You. I want to follow You as my Lord from this day forward. Thank You for never giving up on me. Amen."*
If you prayed that sincerely, you can be assured: you are His.
### Next Steps
1. **Mark this day** - Write down today's date as a stake in the ground
2. **Find a church** - You need community to grow; don't try to do this alone
3. **Start reading** - The Gospel of John is a great place to begin
4. **Tell someone** - Share your renewed commitment with a trusted friend or pastor
5. **Expect growth** - You won't be perfect, but you'll begin to change as you walk with Him
The last 30 years? God can redeem them. Your life isn't over - a new chapter is beginning. The same God who reached you in that stadium is reaching you now, and He finishes what He starts.
