## The Franciscan Vision

St. Francis saw all creation as family. Brother Sun, Sister Moon, Sister Water, Brother Fire, Sister Mother Earth - these were not poetic flourishes but ontological truths. All creatures share one Father; therefore all are siblings.

### Core Principles

**Creation as Mirror:** Every creature reflects its Creator. The beauty, vitality, and purpose of each being is a word God speaks. To contemplate creation is to contemplate God.

**Creation as Praise:** All creatures praise God simply by being what they are. Brother Sun praises by shining. Sister Water praises by flowing. They need no words; their existence is their prayer.

**Creation as Kin:** The separation between human and nature is illusion. We are not stewards standing above creation but siblings within it. The lark and the worm are family.

**Creation as Gift:** Everything is received, nothing owned. The sunrise, the rain, the wind - all gifts freshly given each moment.

## The Practice

### Step 1: Identify What Is Present

Look around. What creature or element of creation is available to you right now?
- Sunlight through a window (Brother Sun)
- Water in a glass (Sister Water)
- Wind outside (Brother Wind)
- A tree, bird, insect, cloud
- Even a houseplant, a pet, or the earth beneath the building

If nothing seems present: the air you breathe is Brother Air. The ground beneath you is Sister Mother Earth. Something is always present.

### Step 2: Address as Family

Invite the user to address this creature as brother or sister:
- "Brother Sun, you are beautiful and radiant..."
- "Sister Water, you are useful and humble and precious..."
- "Brother Tree, you stand faithful through the seasons..."

This is not personification. It is recognition of shared creaturehood.

### Step 3: Receive the Praise

Ask: What praise does this creature offer the Creator simply by being?
- Brother Sun praises by giving light and warmth
- Sister Water praises by sustaining life, by flowing downward in humility
- Brother Bird praises by singing, by flying, by being exactly what it is

The creature needs no words. Its existence is its prayer.

### Step 4: See the Reflection

Ask: What does this creature reveal about its Creator?
- Brother Fire reveals beauty, playfulness, robustness, and strength
- Sister Moon reveals clarity, preciousness, beauty
- Brother Wolf (yes, even the wolf) reveals wildness, freedom, hunger that can be redirected

Every creature is a letter in God's alphabet.

### Step 5: Recognize Kinship

Land in the truth: You are siblings. Same Father, same family. The separation you felt was illusion. You were never disconnected from creation - you forgot you were part of it.

## Creation Contemplation

### What Is Present
Even in your cubicle, dear sister, creation surrounds you - though it may wear disguises. Look: there is light. Whether from windows or electric lamps, light reaches you. And there is air - you are breathing it now. Perhaps there is water nearby, in a bottle or a tap. These are not less than mountains and forests. Brother Sun's light reaches you even through glass and electricity. Sister Water waits for you in humble vessels.

### The Fraternal Address
Pause a moment. Look at the light - whatever light you have. Say, quietly or in your heart: "Brother Light, you who pierce the darkness, who reveal colors and shapes, who make seeing possible - praised be the Creator through you."

Or take a breath. Say: "Brother Air, invisible gift, filling my lungs, sustaining my life without my asking - praised be the Creator through you."

### The Creature's Praise
Brother Light praises by illuminating. He asks nothing in return. He simply shines, and in shining, declares the glory of the One who said "Let there be light."

Brother Air praises by flowing in and out of every creature, connecting us invisibly, reminding us that we share one breath with all living things.

### The Divine Reflection
Light reveals that the Creator is generous, that there is always illumination offered, that darkness is never complete. Air reveals that the Creator sustains without ceasing, that provision comes even when we do not ask, that we are held in invisible embrace.

### The Kinship
You are not outside creation, dear sister. You are inside it. The fluorescent light is Brother Sun's grandchild. The filtered air is Brother Wind's gift. The floor beneath you rests on Sister Mother Earth. You are never truly in a cubicle - you are in the household of God, surrounded by siblings.

### The Invitation
Choose one creature or element each day - even in your cubicle. Address it as brother or sister. Ask what it praises, what it reveals. Soon you will find creation everywhere, because creation is everywhere. The dead feeling will lift as you remember: you are part of the family.
