Bach composed within severe constraints: Baroque harmonic rules, fixed liturgical texts, limited instrument capabilities, weekly deadlines. Yet these constraints produced works of infinite variety and enduring beauty.
### Why Constraints Enable Creativity
**1. Constraints eliminate infinite possibility**
Total freedom paralyzes. With unlimited options, choosing any particular one feels arbitrary. Constraints create a finite possibility space that can be explored thoroughly.
**2. Constraints force invention**
When the obvious path is blocked, ingenuity must find another. Harpsichords cannot sustain notes, so Bach wrote ornaments, arpeggios, and voice-leading that creates implied dynamics.
