# Chance Operations
A methodology for using randomization to bypass ego and unlock possibilities that intention would filter out.
## Description
Chance operations are systematic techniques for removing personal preference from creative and decision-making processes. Rather than generating randomness for its own sake, this method collaborates with forces outside the self to discover options, structures, and outcomes that conscious intention would never reach.
This is not about chaos or absence of structure. Chance operations replace one kind of order (ego-driven selection) with another kind of order (participatory inclusion). The results are often more interesting than what deliberate choice would produce because they bypass the filters of habit, taste, and expectation.
## When to Use
- When you're stuck in repetitive patterns and need to break free
- When personal preferences might be limiting your options
- When you want to include possibilities your ego would reject
- When exploring a creative space more thoroughly than taste allows
- When collaborative input is needed but no collaborator is available
- When you suspect your "best judgment" is actually just comfort
- When decision fatigue has compromised your ability to choose

## Workflow
### Step 1: Define the Decision Space
Before introducing chance, clearly articulate what choices are being made. Break complex decisions into discrete, answerable questions.
**Example:** Instead of "What should this piece be about?" ask "What is the opening word? What is the tempo? What instrument begins?"
### Step 2: Create Parameter Sets
For each decision point, define the complete range of acceptable possibilities. Be more inclusive than your taste would normally allow.
**Example:** If choosing colors, don't just list colors you like. Include all colors. The point is to bypass preference, not reinforce it.
### Step 3: Select Your Randomization Method
Choose a chance mechanism appropriate to your context:
- **I Ching:** 64 hexagrams, excellent for complex multi-layered decisions
- **Dice:** Simple and immediate, good for smaller parameter sets
- **Coin flips:** Binary choices or weighted yes/no decisions
- **Random number generators:** Precise and infinitely scalable
- **Star charts:** For those wanting cosmic collaboration
- **Card draws:** Good for sequential decisions with removal
### Step 4: Map Chance to Choice
Create explicit rules for how random outputs translate to decisions. This mapping should be done before you know the outcome.
**Example:** "If the I Ching gives hexagram 1-16, use piano. Hexagram 17-32, use strings. Hexagram 33-48, use percussion. Hexagram 49-64, use electronics."
### Step 5: Accept the Result
This is the crucial step. Whatever chance determines, accept it without modification. The temptation to override "bad" results defeats the entire purpose. Your judgment of "bad" is precisely what you're trying to bypass.
### Step 6: Work Within the Constraint
Use the chance-determined outcome as a collaborator's input, not as a limitation. Find ways to make it work rather than reasons it won't.

## Key Principles
### Chance Is Not Randomness
Chance operations aren't about generating noise. They're about collaborating with something outside your preferences. The I Ching isn't a random number generator; it's a conversation partner with its own logic.
### Preparation Matters
The quality of chance operations depends on the quality of your parameter sets. Garbage in, garbage out. Define meaningful options before introducing randomness.
### Ego Wants to Cheat
You will want to override results you don't like. Notice this impulse. It's information about what your ego is protecting. The discomfort is the point.
### Acceptance Is the Practice
The methodology only works if you commit to accepting outcomes. Half-hearted chance operations—where you reject results until you get what you wanted anyway—are worse than just making deliberate choices.
### The Universe Decides Better
This sounds mystical but it's practical: your preferences are limited by your experience. Chance includes possibilities you've never considered. It's not smarter than you; it's more inclusive.

There are no mistakes in chance operations, only unexpected outcomes. If a result seems wrong, that's information about your expectations, not about the result.

- **Overriding results:** Rejecting outcomes until you get what you want
- **Treating chance as decoration:** Using randomness superficially without commitment
