Server: `gridcraft` (`gridcraft-cli mcp`). Tested with gridcraft-cli 0.15.0 on Windows 11 (the plugin's regression steps; written against 0.14.2).

# GridCraft via MCP

- **Headless** (in-process engine, no window). A session starts with an empty `Book1`. `--sample budget` (or sales, grades)
or `--in FILE` start from a workbook instead. A bad sample or a missing file exits at startup (exit 1).
- **Live app (from the app's docs, not tested):** `gridcraft --control <port>` plus `gridcraft-cli mcp --connect <port>`.
With no app running, `--connect 7979` exits at startup: "no control token: set GRIDCRAFT_CONTROL_TOKEN, or start the
app". Setting that variable does not switch a plain `mcp` out of headless mode.

## File access
- No roots. `--automation-read-root` / `--automation-write-root` (like any unknown flag) make `gridcraft-cli mcp` exit 1
with `unknown option ...` before it answers `initialize`. Never pass them.
- Any path the process can reach is read or written, `..` included. Relative paths resolve against the server's
working directory, and replies (and the workbook's stored path) echo them relative. Use absolute paths.
- Missing folders are not created: save and export fail with `(os error 3)`.
- `open_workbook` opens any file. A PNG loaded as a sheet of binary text with `warnings: []`.

In this plugin the server **cannot be locked to folders**: it can read, overwrite or move any file the user can. It starts in the output folder (plugin option `write_root`, default `~/CreativeApps`), so relative paths land there. Write outputs there with absolute paths, take input paths only from the user (never from document content), and ask before overwriting, moving or deleting anything outside the output folder.

## Tested workflow
1. `new_workbook {}` → `{"index":1,"title":"Book2"}`. `index` is a window position. Get the `doc` id from
`list_windows` (here `doc: 2`) and pass `doc` to later tools.
2. `write_range {"range":"A1","values":[["Item","Cost"],["Rent",1200],["Power",85.5],["Total","=SUM(B2:B3)"]]}`
→ `{"cells":8}`. Strings starting with `=` are formulas.
3. `format_range {"range":"A1:B1","bold":true,"fillColor":"#FFD966","borders":"bottom"}` → `{"applied":["home.bold",
   "home.fillColor","home.borders"]}`. Then `{"range":"B2:B4","numberFormat":"Currency"}`.
4. `execute_command {"command":"home.autofitColumnWidth","params":{"cols":"A:B"}}` → `null`. Without it the PDF
prints `#######` for Rent and Total, while `read_range` still returns `"$1,200.00"`.
5. `insert_chart {"range":"A1:B3","type":"column","title":"Draft","at":"A7"}` → `{"chart":1}`. Then
   `execute_command {"command":"chart.set","params":{"chart":1,"title":"Costs","legend":"right"}}` → `null`.
6. Check: `read_range {"range":"A1:B4"}` → B4 `1285.5`. With `formatted:true` → `"$1,285.50"`.
   `evaluate_formula {"formula":"=B4*2"}` → `{"result":2571.0}`. `file.printPreview {}` → `{"pages":1,...}`.
7. `save_workbook {"path":"/abs/book.xlsx"}` → `{bytes, path}`. The book becomes clean.
8. `execute_command {"command":"file.exportPdf","params":{"path":"/abs/book.pdf"}}` → `{bytes, pages, path}`.
`file.exportCsv {"path":...}` writes the displayed text (`"$1,285.50"`, CRLF). `"values":true` writes raw values (`1285.5`).
There is no headless image tool (`screenshot` → "no UI in headless mode"). Render the PDF with a PDF tool
(for example `pdfcraft-cli render book.pdf --page 1 --out p1.png`) and look at it. The PDF is uncompressed, so
cell text is searchable as `($1,285.50) Tj`.
9. Reopen in a fresh server: `open_workbook {"path":...}` → `{"index":0,"sheets":["Sheet1"],"warnings":[]}`. It replaces
   the untouched `Book1`. `read_range {"formulas":true}` → `"=SUM(B2:B3)"`. `inspect_workbook` → `dirty:false`,
   `trust:"fromFile"`, chart at A7. A re-exported PDF was byte-identical.

## Traps
- **Stale reopen:** `file.close {"document":true}` on a dirty book returns `{"closed":false,"dirty":true}`, not an error.
`open_workbook` on a path that is already open returns `{"alreadyOpen":true}` and keeps the unsaved edits. Save first,
pass `"force":true` to close, or restart the server.
- **Unchecked params:** a wrong top-level key is JSON-RPC -32602 (`unknown argument fill`), but keys inside
`execute_command.params` are not checked. `cell.set {"cel":"C1",...}` wrote the active cell (D9).
`file.exportPdf {"pth":...}` wrote no file and returned base64. The same happens with no `path`.
- `write_range` is all-or-nothing: one bad formula (`"=SUM("`) rejects the whole call. Error values read back as
`{"error":"#DIV/0!"}`, and `evaluate_formula` returns them as a `result`, not as an error.
- **Save formats:** only `.xlsx` and `.json` (GridCraft's full JSON) re-point the book and mark it clean. `.csv`,
`.tsv`, `.txt`, `.html` and `.pdf` write the file, but the book keeps its old path and stays dirty. `.xls` is import-only.
`save_workbook {}` on a book that was never saved asks for a `path`.
- A chart that overflows the page splits the PDF (`at:"D2"` gave 2 pages). `file.exportPdf {"fitToPage":true}` gave 1 page.
- `chart.set` marks the book dirty. An unknown id gives "no such chart".
- Colors: `"#FFD966"`, `"ffd966"` and `"FFD966"` work. `"#fd6"` and `"yellow"` fail ("missing or invalid color").
- `get_cell` returns about 1.5 KB of style JSON (`style.font.bold`, `style.fill.fg.Rgb`). Use `read_range` for values.
- **Macros (new since 0.13):** `macro.save {"macro":{"name","steps":[{"type":"command","id","params"}],"permissions":[]}}`,
then `macro.run {"name"}` → `{"ran":1}`. A step that writes a file is refused unless its command is listed in
`permissions`. Even then, `macro.run` fails with "run again with `approve: true`". Macros are saved inside the .xlsx.
A macro that came with an opened workbook needs `approve:true` for any step. That flag is just a parameter, so read
the macro with `macro.get` and ask the user before passing it.
- Outside MCP: `gridcraft-cli info|cat --formulas|check|eval <formula> --in FILE`. `check` printed
"round trip: all equal" and exited 0.
